Strawberry Shortcake Strain: One Name, Two Very Different Desserts
The Strawberry Shortcake strain is a strawberry-forward hybrid with a split identity. The best-documented version is Colorado breeder Dark Horse Genetics' cross of Juliet and Strawberry Diesel — a sativa-leaning, sweet-berry-and-fuel strain built for daytime. The version on Leafly is something else entirely: an indica cross of White Wookie and The White, with strawberry-and-vanilla flavor and a sleepy finish. Same name, same dessert theme, opposite highs. It sits in the fruit-forward corner of our THCA flower collection.
That split is the single most important thing to know before you buy a jar labeled Strawberry Shortcake. Below: both lineages and who backs each one, what each cut smells and feels like, what the potency numbers actually mean, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to tell which Shortcake you're holding.

- Type: Hybrid — and the lean depends on the cut. AllBud and GrowDiaries list the Juliet cross at 75% sativa; Leafly lists the White Wookie cross as an indica; Leafwell calls it indica-dominant.
- Ancestry (version 1): Juliet × Strawberry Diesel, bred by Dark Horse Genetics — per SeedFinder, AllBud, GrowDiaries and Weedmaps.
- Ancestry (version 2): White Wookie × The White — per Leafly, Leafwell and Theory Wellness. Weedmaps ties this cut to Jungle Boys but says the original breeder is uncertain; Leafwell credits Cannarado Genetics and The Jungle Boys.
- Ancestry (version 3): Weedmaps also lists a Lost River Seeds version, Strawberry Cough × Plushberry. It's poorly documented and rarely seen.
- THC: Leafly 16%; Weedmaps and SeedFinder 18–22%; AllBud 18–23%; Leafwell around 20%.
- CBD and CBG: CBD is negligible (under 1%). Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Aliases: Strawberry SC (Weedmaps), plus Strawberry Cupcake, OG Strawberry Shortcake and Strawberry Shortcake OG (Leafly).
The Dark Horse Genetics cross: Juliet × Strawberry Diesel
Dark Horse Genetics is the Colorado outfit behind Bruce Banner, and Strawberry Shortcake comes from the same Strawberry Diesel well. SeedFinder's family tree traces the two parents:
- Juliet: Cinderella 99 × NYC Diesel (SeedFinder marks this "probably"). Weedmaps specifies the J3 phenotype of Juliet.
- Strawberry Diesel: Strawberry Cough × Sour Diesel.
That's a stack of energetic, fruity, diesel-family genetics, which is why this cut reads sativa: uplifting, cerebral, creative. SeedFinder says it was only ever released as regular (not feminized) seed, which helps explain why true Dark Horse Shortcake is hard to find. Its resin also made it a parent: SeedFinder lists Jungle Boys' Frosted Cakes as Jungle Cake × Strawberry Shortcake (Dark Horse Genetics).
The White Wookie × The White cut
The version most dispensary shoppers meet through Leafly is an indica built from two frost-heavy "White" lines. Weedmaps describes its flowers as dense and heavily frosted, with creamy berry, pastry sweetness and earthy gas, and effects that start as tingling relaxation and end in sleepiness. Leafly lists Frosted Cake and Hot Cakes as its offspring. No reliable flowering window or breeder record is published for it.
Which Strawberry Shortcake is the "real" one?
Both are real — strain names aren't trademarked, and two breeders landed on the same dessert. The Dark Horse cross has the clearer paper trail (a named breeder and documented parents). The White Wookie cut has the bigger review footprint on Leafly. If a menu doesn't say which, the effects description usually gives it away: "uplifting, creative, daytime" means Juliet × Strawberry Diesel; "relaxed, sleepy, nighttime" means White Wookie × The White.
Strawberry Shortcake Terpene Profile
Leafly lists caryophyllene as Strawberry Shortcake's dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and limonene. Leafwell adds linalool, humulene, pinene, camphene and phellandrene. Caryophyllene is the interesting one: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the warm base
Myrcene — earthy, relaxed body
Limonene — sweet berry-citrus lift
Linalool — soft floral, vanilla-cream calm
Typical relative profile for Strawberry Shortcake — caryophyllene-led per Leafly. Dark Horse (Juliet × Strawberry Diesel) cuts often read brighter and more limonene-forward; White Wookie cuts lean creamier and heavier on myrcene.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, slightly spicy base under the fruit — AllBud's "spicy earth" note — and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it drives the relaxed body, and it's louder in the indica White Wookie cut.
- Limonene: The sweet, bright top note and a likely driver of the uplifting, social onset reviewers describe on the Dark Horse cross.
- Linalool: Floral and soft; part of the "vanilla cream" impression and the calmer finish.
The strawberry itself isn't one terpene. In the Dark Horse cut it comes down through Strawberry Diesel from Strawberry Cough; in the White Wookie cut it's the overall chemistry of a dessert-leaning indica.
Appearance
AllBud describes Strawberry Shortcake as small, piecey, popcorn-shaped nugs in a minty green, wrapped in thick orange hairs and a frosty coat of tiny white trichomes — classic Juliet-cross structure. The White Wookie × The White cut is the opposite build: Weedmaps describes dense, heavily frosted flowers, which fits two parents named for their white trichome coverage. If your jar is all chunky, chalk-white nugs, it's more likely the indica cut.
Aroma and Flavor
Open the jar and strawberry comes first — sweet, ripe and a little sugary. Weedmaps users break the flavor down as strawberry (48%), sweet (34%) and vanilla (18%), which is exactly what the name promises: berries over cake and cream. On the Dark Horse cross, AllBud notes a diesel overtone that turns heavy and sour when the buds are broken apart and burned, plus a spicy, earthy undertone. Theory Wellness describes the White Wookie cut as strong strawberry with subtle lemon, skunk and pine. In short: the sativa cut is strawberry and fuel; the indica cut is strawberry and vanilla cream.
Recreational Effects
What you feel depends on which Strawberry Shortcake you have.
- Dark Horse cut (Juliet × Strawberry Diesel): AllBud lists creative, focused, sociable and uplifting; GrowDiaries growers report creative, energetic and talkative. SeedFinder calls it an uplifting, cerebral, daytime high.
- White Wookie cut: Leafly's reviewers report relaxed, tingly and sleepy, and Leafly frames it as a nighttime strain — "euphoric effects that put your mind into a state of bliss."
- Common ground: Weedmaps says uplift and euphoria are the most-reported effects across all versions.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a quick mood lift and a light head buzz. Leafwell describes the onset as fast and strong.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak. On the sativa cut it's chatty, creative and motivated; on the indica cut it's a warm, tingly body calm.
- 1–3 hours: a gradual comedown. The White Wookie cut tends to end on the couch or in bed; the Dark Horse cut can build and linger — one AllBud reviewer reported long-lasting effects.
Because the two cuts behave so differently, try a small amount of a new batch at home before you rely on it for a work afternoon or a night's sleep.

A Strawberry Shortcake joint gets its final twist, with fresh strawberries on the side.

How Strong Is Strawberry Shortcake?
Strawberry Shortcake is moderate-to-strong rather than a record-setter. Published averages cluster in the high teens and low 20s:
- Leafly: 16% THC, about 1% CBG (it still describes the strain as "higher THC than average").
- Weedmaps and SeedFinder: 18–22%.
- AllBud: 18–23%, with individual reviewers reporting batches near 24%.
- Leafwell: around 20%.
- GrowDiaries: 16–23%.
Those numbers are older database averages. Modern, well-grown batches of any strain can test higher, and potency varies more between growers and harvests than between names. What makes Strawberry Shortcake feel stronger than its numbers is the fast onset — and, on the Dark Horse cut, a high that some reviewers say keeps building. Start low.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Strawberry Shortcake batch against the 16–23% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Strawberry Shortcake vs Similar Strains
- vs Strawberry Diesel: the parent of the Dark Horse cut. Strawberry Diesel is gassier and more energetic; Strawberry Shortcake rounds it out with sweeter, dessert-like fruit.
- vs Strawberry Cough: the grandparent of the strawberry flavor. Strawberry Cough is lighter, airier and more purely sativa; Shortcake has more body.
- vs Bruce Banner: a half-sibling from the same breeder — Dark Horse Genetics crossed Strawberry Diesel with OG Kush for Bruce Banner and with Juliet for Strawberry Shortcake. Bruce Banner is heavier and more potent; Shortcake is sweeter and brighter.
- vs Strawberry Glue: another Strawberry Diesel cross, this time with Gorilla Glue #4. More glue-and-gas weight, the same berry top note.
- vs Strawberry Guava: a different strawberry line — tropical rather than dessert. It's the parent of Straw Gua Mintz, our closest in-stock match: Strawberry Guava × Kush Mints, sativa-leaning, with strawberry, guava and banana over a cool mint exhale. It lines up well with the bright, social Dark Horse cut; it's not a match for the sleepy White Wookie cut.
Who Strawberry Shortcake Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: fans of sweet, fruit-forward flower; daytime social and creative sessions (Dark Horse cut); a dessert-flavored evening wind-down (White Wookie cut).
Poor fit: anyone who needs predictable effects without checking which cut they're buying, and anyone prone to racing thoughts — an AllBud reviewer warns novices to start small. For a lighter strawberry option on our shelf, Strawberry 2.1 starts from $22. If you want the creamy, relaxed side instead, Super Boof brings cherry and cream with a mellow finish.
How to Use Strawberry Shortcake THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the strawberry and vanilla. Around 350–380°F keeps the sweet top notes; 390–410°F brings out the spice and the heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes before taking more — the onset is fast, and the Dark Horse cut can keep building. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance, chemotype and which cut you have.
- Anxiety: about 25% of Leafly reviewers — though "anxious" is also one of Leafly's listed negatives, so dose matters.
- Stress: about 21% on Leafly; AllBud lists stress too.
- Low mood: about 17% on Leafly; AllBud lists depression and mood swings.
- Fatigue and focus: AllBud lists fatigue and ADD/ADHD — consistent with the energetic Dark Horse cut.
- Sleep: Leafly says patients choose it for insomnia — the White Wookie cut, not the sativa one.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints (Leafly, GrowDiaries).
- Headache or dizziness — Leafly lists headache; GrowDiaries growers report dizziness.
- Anxiety or paranoia — listed on Leafly and GrowDiaries, and described by an AllBud reviewer as racing thoughts. Mostly a high-dose or low-tolerance problem.
- Couch-lock and fatigue — Leafwell lists both; expect them from the indica cut.
Is Strawberry Shortcake good for sleep? The White Wookie cut can be; the Dark Horse cut usually isn't. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
How to Judge a Good Bag of Strawberry Shortcake
- Ask which cut. Juliet × Strawberry Diesel or White Wookie × The White? A good seller knows. If they don't, read the effects description.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Real strawberry on the nose. Both cuts should smell clearly of berries. Flat hay or generic "weed" means the terpenes are gone.
- Structure that fits the cut — popcorny, minty-green and orange-haired for the Dark Horse cross; dense and chalky with frost for the White Wookie cut.
- A proper cure — it should feel springy, not crumbly or damp.
Growing Strawberry Shortcake
How it grows depends on which version you plant — and finding seeds is the first hurdle.
- Dark Horse Genetics (Juliet × Strawberry Diesel): about 65–72 days of flower (SeedFinder; around 69 days typical), above-average yield on the females, indoor or outdoor. Released as regular seed only, so expect to sex your plants. Its resin production makes it popular for extracts.
- White Wookie × The White: Leafwell lists a faster 46–53 day flower, plants around 6 feet, and roughly 1–2 oz per square foot indoors or 15–20 oz per plant outdoors. It calls the plant temperamental, prone to mold and pests, and not for new growers. Weedmaps says no reliable flowering window has been documented — treat these numbers as rough.
- Lost River Seeds (Strawberry Cough × Plushberry): Weedmaps lists 55–65 days, about 25% stretch and a large yield.
- Other seed versions: SeedFinder also lists an autoflower (Pure Instinto) and a Purple Pucker cross (Yin Yang Seeds) under the Strawberry Shortcake name.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Strawberry Shortcake indica or sativa?
It depends on the cut. Dark Horse Genetics' Juliet × Strawberry Diesel is sativa-leaning (AllBud lists it 75% sativa). The White Wookie × The White version is an indica per Leafly. Check the effects description: 'uplifting and creative' is the sativa cut; 'relaxed and sleepy' is the indica.

Dark Horse Genetics bred the Juliet × Strawberry Diesel version — the same Colorado breeder behind Bruce Banner. The White Wookie × The White cut is associated with Jungle Boys and Cannarado Genetics, but Weedmaps says its original breeder is uncertain.
What does Strawberry Shortcake taste like?
Sweet strawberry first, then vanilla and a cake-like sweetness. The Dark Horse cut adds a diesel and spicy-earth edge when you break and burn it; the White Wookie cut leans creamier, with hints of lemon, skunk and pine.

It's mixed. About 25% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' is also on its list of negatives, and one AllBud reviewer reported racing thoughts. Low doses are the safer approach.
Is Strawberry Shortcake good for beginners?
Cautiously. Its THC is moderate, but the onset is fast and the two cuts behave differently. One small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes.
Is Strawberry SC the same as Strawberry Shortcake?
Yes — Weedmaps lists Strawberry SC as an alias. Leafly also lists Strawberry Cupcake, OG Strawberry Shortcake and Strawberry Shortcake OG.
What's the difference between Strawberry Shortcake and Strawberry Cough?
Strawberry Cough is a lighter, airier sativa and sits in Strawberry Shortcake's family tree via Strawberry Diesel. Strawberry Shortcake is sweeter and more dessert-like, with more body.
