Sub Zero Strain: Frost, Funk and a Cold Mint Finish
The Sub Zero strain — properly Sub Zero #12 — is Super Boof crossed with Oreoz by Grow More Fire Genetics. It earns the name twice over: buds caked so thickly with trichomes they look frozen, and a cool, minty edge under a loud diesel funk. Leafly put it first on its list of hot strains to smoke in 2026, and it has been spreading fast through clone-only menus ever since. It sits in the dessert-and-gas corner of our THCA flower collection.
It's also a name with a problem. At least three unrelated strains are sold as "Sub Zero," and they don't smoke alike. Below: which Sub Zero is which, what the potency numbers really say, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, how to judge a bag — and the closest options we actually carry.
A 360° look at Sub Zero's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid. AllBud and the clone nursery Kaprikorn call it a 50/50; Leafly's reviewers say its effects are "mostly calming," and several say it "seems more like an indica."
- Ancestry: Super Boof × Oreoz. Super Boof is Black Cherry Punch × Tropicana Cookies; Oreoz is Cookies and Cream × Secret Weapon.
- Breeder: Grow More Fire Genetics, credited on Leafly and Weedmaps.
- THC: Leafly lists 22% and says it "often tests at over 22%"; AllBud and Weedmaps list 24–28%.
- CBD: Negligible — not reported by Leafly.
- Aliases: Sub Zero #12, SubZero, Sub-Zero. Leafly lists one offspring so far: SzW Subzero Warheads.
What does the "#12" mean?
Like Bruce Banner #3 or Gelato #33, the number is a phenotype — the twelfth plant (or keeper selection) from Grow More Fire's Super Boof × Oreoz seed run. Weedmaps describes #12 as "one phenotype of this cross," and it's the cut most menus mean when they just say "Sub Zero." Other numbered cuts circulate too — a Detroit retailer lists a Sub Zero #6 — so the number on the jar is worth checking.
Three strains called Sub Zero
Weedmaps opens its Sub Zero page with a warning: "Three distinct breeding projects share this name, making the breeder as important as the label on the jar." Leafly adds that this Sub Zero is "not to be confused with SubZero from North Genetics."
- Grow More Fire Genetics — Sub Zero (#12): Super Boof × Oreoz. Fruit and citrus, cookie cream and gas. This is the strain on this page and the one behind the 2026 buzz.
- North Genetics — SubZero: Strawberry Diesel crossed with males from a Chemdog × Hindu Kush cross. Strawberry, diesel, earthy and pungent — an older seed line with a different profile.
- Tsunami Seed Co. — Sub Zero: Ice Cream Cake × Animal Tsunami. A separate seed line, not another name for either of the above.
Why it's hot right now
In January 2026, Leafly's "10 hot strains to smoke in 2026" listed Sub Zero first, describing heavy diesel funk with minty undertones, a sharp citrus note, deep purple frosty buds and a warm, relaxing high — and noting that it mostly takes after the Oreoz side. It's still mainly a clone-only strain: a grower guide from Dark Coast Seed notes seeds were "not widely stocked" as of early 2026.
Sub Zero Terpene Profile
Leafly doesn't list a lab-measured dominant terpene for Sub Zero yet, so treat any terpene chart as a best estimate. Grower write-ups list caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene as primary, with linalool and pinene behind them — consistent with its parents, since Leafly lists myrcene as Super Boof's dominant terpene. Caryophyllene is the interesting one: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, diesel funk, the Oreoz gas
Myrcene — earthy, the calm body
Limonene — citrus, grapefruit lift
Linalool — floral, soothing
Pinene — pine, the cool top note
Estimated relative profile for Sub Zero #12, based on grower reports and its parents — no published lab average yet. Check the COA on any batch.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery and fuel-edged — the diesel funk Leafly's writers lead with, inherited from the Oreoz side.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky, and Super Boof's lead terpene — it's behind the calm, heavy finish.
- Limonene: The grapefruit and citrus-peel brightness, and part of the euphoric onset.
- Linalool and pinene: Floral and pine support notes that round out the "cold" impression.
The mint isn't one terpene. Sub Zero has no Kush Mints in its family tree; the cool, almost menthol sensation reviewers describe is the combined chemistry of the whole profile — one Maine reviewer called it "a light menthol effervescence," more a feeling in the nose than an aroma.
Appearance
Sub Zero looks the part. Leafly describes "a thick, white coat of trichomes" over "blocky, deep purple buds," and its 2026 hot-strains pick calls out deep purple, frosty flower. AllBud describes fluffy, grape-shaped, minty-green nugs with dark purple undertones and orange hairs. Not every cut goes purple: the clone nursery Kaprikorn describes its Sub Zero as green "accented by silver hues," with buds "around half dollar" size and trichomes "completely encasing the buds." Purple is partly genetic and partly environmental — cool nights late in flower bring it out — so a green Sub Zero isn't automatically a fake. What should never be missing is the frost.
Aroma and Flavor
Sub Zero's flavor reports vary more than most, partly because of the three-strains problem and partly because the cut is still new. The consistent notes:
- Diesel funk: Leafly's top flavors are mint, diesel and grapefruit, and its writers lead with "heavy diesel funk."
- Cool mint: a minty, almost menthol edge on the exhale — the "Sub Zero" part.
- Citrus: grapefruit, orange and lemon. Kaprikorn describes "savory earthy undertones with bright citrus notes of orange and lemon."
- Dessert: AllBud picks up sweet chocolate cookie, creamy strawberry and a spicy cinnamon note — the Oreoz and Super Boof sides showing through.
A Maine review of a Sub Zero from Preposterously (grown by Faded) compared the smoke to a cherry-cheese danish with black coffee and called it "clean and smooth."
Recreational Effects
Sub Zero starts in the head and ends in the body. Leafly's reviewers rate it "mostly calming," with the most-reported effects:
- Relaxed: the headline effect — a warm, loose body calm.
- Euphoric: a quick mood lift at the start.
- Happy: giggly and social at low doses — the Maine reviewer called it "uplifting, social, talkative."
- Heavy at higher doses: AllBud describes a "heavy physical high" that drops you "into the couch with a potent, body melt."
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a fast, bright mood lift — chatty and happy.
- 15–60 minutes: the body arrives; one grower guide puts the full-body effect at around 15–20 minutes. Calm, heavy limbs, a quiet head.
- 1–3 hours: a long, relaxed taper. At high doses, sleepy.
Dose decides which Sub Zero you get: a little is social; a lot is couch.

How Strong Is Sub Zero?
Strong, but the numbers are all over the place:
- Leafly: 22% THC — "often tests at over 22%."
- AllBud and Weedmaps: 24–28%.
- A Maine retail batch (Preposterously / Faded): 18–22%.
- Some seed-seller guides: 28–33% — treat that as a ceiling claim, not a typical number.
Leafly's reviewers back up the reputation — one high-tolerance reviewer wrote that half their usual amount "had me blasted." Realistically, expect a well-grown Sub Zero #12 to land in the mid-20s, with the effect feeling heavier than the number because of the myrcene-led body. Is Sub Zero a good strain? On reputation, yes: 4.4 stars on Leafly and a top spot on its 2026 watch list. The catch is buying the right one.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Sub Zero batch against the 22–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Sub Zero vs Similar Strains
- vs Super Boof: the fruitier, more energetic parent — cherry, citrus and cream. Sub Zero adds the Oreoz funk and a heavier finish. Super Boof is on our shelf, and it's the closest genetic link we carry.
- vs Oreoz: the gassy, cookie-sweet parent Leafly says Sub Zero mostly takes after. Oreoz is darker and more chocolate; Sub Zero is brighter and colder.
- vs Kush Mintz: not related, but the same cool mint-over-gas lane — and the parent behind our Straw Gua Mintz.
- vs Cookies and Cream: the grandparent on the Oreoz side; creamier and less funky.
- vs Purple Punch: another purple, relaxing dessert strain — sweeter grape, less gas.
Who Sub Zero Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers who want a potent, flavorful evening strain; anyone chasing the gassy-dessert profile with a cooler, mintier edge; fans of Oreoz and Super Boof.
Poor fit: beginners, anyone prone to THC anxiety ("anxious" is one of Leafly's top negatives), and anyone who needs to stay sharp. For a lighter, more daytime fruit-and-mint profile, Straw Gua Mintz is the better pick on our shelf. For Sub Zero's heavier weight, go with its parent, Super Boof.
How to Use Sub Zero THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to catch the mint and citrus top notes. Around 350–380°F keeps the cool, bright side; 390–410°F brings out the diesel and the body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — reviewers with high tolerance report needing half their usual amount. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety and stress: the most-cited reason (about 26% of Leafly reviewers) — though "anxious" also appears among its negatives, so dose matters.
- Low mood: about 13%, in line with the euphoric, happy onset.
- Aches and pain: about 13%; the Maine reviewer mentioned relief for their knees.
- Sleep: not a Leafly category, but reviewers describe it as sleep-inducing at higher doses.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth — Leafly's most-reported negative.
- Anxiety — reported at high doses or low tolerance.
- Headache — also in Leafly's top negatives, usually from overdoing it.
- Couch-lock and drowsiness — the body hits hard; don't plan anything demanding.
Is Sub Zero good for sleep? At higher doses, many reviewers say yes. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Sub Zero Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Sub Zero. A good seller knows if it's Grow More Fire's Super Boof × Oreoz (#12) or a North Genetics or Tsunami line. "Just Sub Zero" with no lineage is a red flag.
- Frost first. The name promises trichomes — a real Sub Zero looks sugared all the way into the bud.
- Funk plus cool. Diesel and citrus with a minty, clean finish. Pure strawberry-diesel suggests the North Genetics line.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- A proper cure — sticky, springy buds, no hay smell.
Growing Sub Zero
Sub Zero #12 is mostly passed around as clones, not seeds. Grower reports agree it's an intermediate plant that pays off.
- Flowering: about 8–9 weeks per Kaprikorn; other guides say 8–10, with most cuts around 9.
- Yield: Kaprikorn says "very heavy"; Leafly says "high yields."
- Height: sources disagree — Kaprikorn reports 2x stretch in flower, Leafly "medium-stretch," and another guide calls it compact with tight internodes. Plan for a moderate stretch.
- Watch out for: early veg is sensitive — Kaprikorn says it's prone to overwatering and overfeeding and can be "locked out." Dense buds also need airflow to avoid mold.
- Color: cool nights in the last two to three weeks bring out the purple.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sub Zero an indica or sativa?
Sub Zero is a hybrid. AllBud lists it as a 50/50, but most Leafly reviewers find its effects calming and indica-like, especially at higher doses.
Is Sub Zero a good strain?
By reputation, yes. It holds 4.4 stars on Leafly, and Leafly listed it first among its hot strains to smoke in 2026. Make sure you're buying Grow More Fire's Super Boof × Oreoz version.
What is Sub Zero a cross of?
Super Boof × Oreoz, bred by Grow More Fire Genetics. Super Boof is Black Cherry Punch × Tropicana Cookies; Oreoz is Cookies and Cream × Secret Weapon.
What does Sub Zero #12 mean?
#12 is the phenotype — the selected keeper from Grow More Fire's Super Boof × Oreoz seeds. It's the cut most menus mean by 'Sub Zero.'
Are there different Sub Zero strains?
Yes — at least three. Grow More Fire's Sub Zero is Super Boof × Oreoz; North Genetics' SubZero is Strawberry Diesel × Chemdog/Hindu Kush; Tsunami Seed Co.'s is Ice Cream Cake × Animal Tsunami.
How strong is Sub Zero?
Leafly lists 22% THC, and AllBud and Weedmaps list 24–28%. Reviewers describe it as very potent, so start small.
What does Sub Zero taste like?
Diesel funk and cool mint up front, with grapefruit and citrus and a sweet cookie-cream finish. Some batches lean berry and chocolate.
Why is Sub Zero purple?
Purple color comes from anthocyanins, which are partly genetic and partly brought out by cool nights late in flower. Many Sub Zero cuts go deep purple; some stay green with silver frost.
Is Sub Zero good for sleep?
At higher doses, often yes — the euphoric start gives way to a heavy, relaxed body that many reviewers find sleepy.
Is Sub Zero good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 26% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' is also among its top negatives. Low doses are the safer approach.
Is Sub Zero good for beginners?
Not really — it's potent and the body effect builds. If you try it, take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.
How long does Sub Zero take to flower?
About 8–9 weeks indoors per Kaprikorn, with other guides citing 8–10. It's an intermediate grow that's sensitive to overwatering early on.
Where can I buy Sub Zero THCA flower online?
Sub Zero isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. For its cool mint finish, try Straw Gua Mintz THCA Flower, a Strawberry Guava × Kush Mints cross from $29 — though it's lighter and more daytime than Sub Zero. For Sub Zero's weight and funk, go to its parent, Super Boof (½oz $65). Both are third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
