Banana Punch Strain: Banana OG Meets Purple Punch
The Banana Punch strain is a cross of Banana OG and Purple Punch, first bred by Symbiotic Genetics, the Northern California breeders behind a run of fruit-forward Purple Punch crosses. It smells like ripe banana, fresh-cut pineapple and berries with a spicy, hashy edge underneath. The high is a famous creeper: it builds slowly, settles in the head first, then spreads into a tingly, relaxed body that can turn sleepy. It belongs in the fruit-forward corner of our THCA flower collection.
Banana Punch is also a little confusing to shop for. There are two breeders selling the same cross, the THC numbers run from the high teens to the 30s depending on who's counting, and at least two other "banana punch" names on seed menus are different plants. Below: the real lineage, what the potency numbers actually mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Banana Punch Strain Genetics & Lineage
- Type: Hybrid. Leafly calls it "evenly balanced" and AllBud lists it 50/50; Leafwell and Barney's Farm put it at 55% indica. The reported effects — relaxed, tingly, sleepy — read indica-leaning.
- Ancestry: Banana OG × Purple Punch. Banana OG is usually listed as OG Kush × Banana; Purple Punch is Larry OG × Granddaddy Purple.
- Breeder: Symbiotic Genetics, per SeedFinder, which quotes the breeder calling it "a happy marriage between Banana OG and Purple Punch" made for experienced smokers. SeedFinder notes the Symbiotic version was never sold as feminized seed.
- Second source: Barney's Farm sells a feminized Banana Punch built from the same two parents, rated about 55% indica.
- THC: Leafly lists 19%; AllBud 18–26%; Barney's Farm says about 26% on average; Tilray Medical's Canadian flower is labeled 27–33%.
- CBD: Negligible in most data. Leafly lists about 1% CBG. One site, Leafwell, claims 1–6% CBD — no other source backs that, so treat it as an outlier.
- Offspring: Leafly lists Banana Zkittlez (a cross with Zkittlez) and Grease Bucket.
Two breeders, one cross
Symbiotic Genetics made the original as a regular-seed release; SeedFinder records it taking 1st place in the sativa category at the 2019 Karma Cup — an odd category for a strain most people describe as relaxing, and an award we could only find on SeedFinder. Barney's Farm later released its own feminized Banana Punch from Banana OG and Purple Punch, and that is the version most home growers run today. Both lines share the same parents, so the flower is similar, but phenotypes vary.
Not to be confused with…
- Banana Purple Punch: AllBud lists it as a separate indica-dominant strain, and Fast Buds sells an autoflower by that name.
- Atlas Seed's Banana Punch: Atlas Seed lists its "Banana Punch" as Banana Kush × Banana Punch — a different line built on top of it, not the original cross.
Banana OG's own lineage is also disputed — some sources credit Ghost OG as its OG parent — which our Banana OG guide covers in detail.
Banana Punch Terpene Profile
Leafly lists limonene as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and myrcene. Barney's Farm puts limonene first and pinene second, and Tilray Medical lists limonene, beta-caryophyllene and pinene. Caryophyllene is worth knowing on its own: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Limonene — citrus, tropical lift
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, hash
Myrcene — earthy, ripe fruit, heavy body
Pinene — pine, a clearer head
Typical relative profile for Banana Punch — limonene-led per Leafly, Barney's Farm and Tilray. Pinene and myrcene trade places from cut to cut.
- Limonene: The bright citrus-tropical top note, and the reason the pineapple comes through so clearly.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, spicy edge from the OG side — part of the hashy finish reviewers describe on the exhale.
- Myrcene: Earthy and fruity; it's commonly linked with the heavy, sleepy body Banana Punch is known for.
- Pinene: Fresh pine; Barney's Farm lists it second, and it keeps the early head high from feeling foggy.
The banana itself isn't one terpene. It's the overall chemistry of the Banana OG side — Leafly's similar-strains list pairs Banana Punch with Banana Kush for that reason.
Appearance
Banana Punch grows dense, rounded, "cakey" buds — Leafly's growers' word — in olive to forest green with deep purple undertones from the Purple Punch side. Thin orange-to-amber pistils run through a heavy frost of trichomes. AllBud describes rounded olive-green nugs with purple undertones and amber hairs; Leafwell adds golden-amber trichomes and dark orange hairs on mature flower.
Aroma and Flavor
Open the jar and the fruit hits first: ripe banana, berries and grape. Leafly describes "hazy berries, freshly cut pineapple, and bananas"; its top flavor tags are tropical, honey and tree fruit. Give it a second sniff and deeper notes come through — a Westword review picked up licorice, tobacco, wood and a hashy, spicy layer. The smoke follows the same path: sweet tropical fruit on the inhale, spicy hash and overripe banana on the exhale, with a little tobacco in the aftertaste. AllBud's tags add citrus and a sour edge.
Recreational Effects
Banana Punch is a slow builder. On Leafly, with 145 ratings averaging 4.5 stars, the top effects are:
- Tingly: the first thing many people notice — a buzzy, full-body warmth.
- Relaxed: the core of the experience; muscles loosen and the day drops away.
- Sleepy: the finish, especially at higher doses or late in the evening.
- Happy and euphoric: AllBud's reviewers also report euphoria, focus and an uplifted mood early on.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 10–15 minutes: not much — which is exactly why people over-smoke it. Leafly and Leafwell both call it a "creeper."
- 15–45 minutes: the head lifts first — happy, giggly, a little talkative.
- 45 minutes onward: the body takes over. Westword's reviewer put it well: the high "hits like a thousand jabs instead of a few haymakers," and the sedation "rarely leaves before my consciousness does."
Plan for 2–3 hours, with the heaviest part near the end. Don't take a second round until the first has fully landed.

How Strong Is Banana Punch?
Strong — but the numbers depend heavily on who grew it and who's reporting:
- Leafly: 19% THC, about 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 18–26%.
- Leafwell: 18–23%.
- Barney's Farm: about 26% on average for its feminized line.
- Tilray Medical (Canada): 27–33% on its labeled flower.
What makes it feel stronger than the label is the onset. Because it creeps, people take another hit before the first has landed, and the stacked dose arrives all at once. SeedFinder quotes the breeder saying it was made for experienced smokers — take that seriously.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Banana Punch batch against the 18–33% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Banana Punch vs Similar Strains
- vs Banana OG: the banana-and-gas parent. Banana OG is earthier and more OG-forward; Banana Punch adds berry, grape and a more tropical sweetness.
- vs Purple Punch: the grape-dessert parent and the source of the purple hues and sleepy finish. Banana Punch is fruitier and a touch more heady at the start.
- vs Banana Kush: a classic banana strain Leafly lists as similar. Banana Kush is creamier and more uplifting; Banana Punch is heavier in the body.
- vs Papaya Punch and Cherry Punch: Purple Punch siblings with different fruit on top — papaya-tropical and cherry-berry. Cherry Punch is a fellow Symbiotic Genetics cross.
- vs Super Boof: not the same strain — Super Boof is Black Cherry Punch × Tropicana Cookies, and Black Cherry Punch descends from Purple Punch. It shares the dessert-fruit nose and relaxed finish, but swaps banana for cherry and citrus. It's the closest match on our shelf.
Who Banana Punch Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers looking for an evening strain; fans of tropical and banana flavors; anyone who wants to unwind, watch something and go to bed.
Poor fit: beginners who don't wait between hits, daytime productivity, or anyone prone to THC anxiety — Leafly lists "anxious" and headache among its top negatives. If you want a different fruit-forward option, Straw Gua Mintz is on our shelf from $29.
How to Use Banana Punch THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the banana and pineapple before the spice takes over. Around 350–375°F keeps the fruit bright; 390–410°F brings out the hashy, heavier side.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait a full 20–30 minutes — this is a creeper. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the whole arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: about 23% of Leafly reviewers — though "anxious" is also a top negative, so dose matters.
- Stress: about 21%, in line with the relaxed headline effect.
- Pain: about 20%; reviewers often mention body aches easing as the high settles.
- Sleep and appetite: AllBud lists insomnia; Leafly and Leafwell mention appetite loss.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry, red eyes — the most common complaints.
- Anxiety or a racing heart — Leafly lists "anxious" among its top negatives; Leafwell adds rapid heartbeat and paranoia at high doses.
- Headache — one of Leafly's three top negatives.
- Couch-lock — the sedation is the point, but it can arrive later and heavier than expected.
Is Banana Punch good for sleep? Many reviewers say yes — it's one of the reasons people buy it. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Banana Punch Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Banana you can actually smell. A good cut opens with ripe banana and tropical fruit. If it's just earthy OG, it's a weak pheno or a different strain.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Dense, cakey structure with purple undertones and frost inside the bud, not just on top.
- A proper cure — slightly sticky, not crunchy. Westword's reviewer singled out cure as what separated the best Colorado batches.
- Check the name. "Banana Purple Punch" and Banana Kush backcrosses are different plants.
Growing Banana Punch
Banana Punch is considered a manageable grow. Leafwell calls it sturdy, mold- and disease-resistant and suitable for novices; Zamnesia rates the Barney's Farm version moderate.
- Flowering: 8–9 weeks (60–65 days) indoors per Barney's Farm and Leafwell.
- Yield: Barney's Farm lists up to about 650 g/m² indoors and 1 kg+ per plant outdoors; GrowDiaries growers average about 144 g per plant across 38 diaries.
- Height: about 110 cm (3.5 ft) indoors and 200 cm (6.5 ft) outdoors.
- Climate: warm, sunny and dry; Zamnesia lists it as cold-resistant and suited to temperate and Mediterranean climates. Outdoors, harvest by the end of September in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Seeds: Symbiotic Genetics (regular) and Barney's Farm (feminized).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Banana Punch indica or sativa?
Banana Punch is a hybrid. Leafly calls it evenly balanced and AllBud lists it 50/50, while Leafwell and Barney's Farm put it at 55% indica. Its most-reported effects — relaxed, tingly, sleepy — read indica-leaning, and most people save it for the evening.
What is Banana Punch a cross of?
Banana OG × Purple Punch. The original is credited to Symbiotic Genetics on SeedFinder; Barney's Farm sells a feminized version built from the same two parents.
How strong is Banana Punch?
Leafly lists 19% THC, AllBud 18–26%, Barney's Farm about 26%, and Tilray Medical labels its flower 27–33%. It's a creeper, so it often feels stronger than the number — start small and wait.
What does Banana Punch taste like?
Ripe banana, fresh pineapple and berries up front, with honey and citrus; the exhale turns spicy and hashy with a little tobacco and wood.
Is Banana Punch a creeper?
Yes. Leafly and Leafwell both call it a creeper — the high builds slowly over 30–45 minutes, head first and then into a heavy body. Wait before taking more.
Is Banana Punch good for sleep?
Many reviewers use it at night. Sleepy is one of Leafly's top three effects, and the body sedation deepens as the high goes on.
Is Banana Punch good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 23% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' is also one of its top negatives. Low doses are the safer approach.
Who bred Banana Punch?
SeedFinder credits Symbiotic Genetics, which describes it as 'a happy marriage between Banana OG and Purple Punch.' Barney's Farm also sells a feminized Banana Punch from the same parents.
Does Banana Punch have CBD?
Very little in most lab data — Leafly lists no meaningful CBD and about 1% CBG. One site claims 1–6% CBD, but no other source supports it.
Is Banana Punch good for beginners?
Not really. It's potent and slow to hit, which is a bad combination for new users. If you try it, take one small puff and wait 20–30 minutes.
How long does Banana Punch take to flower?
About 8–9 weeks (60–65 days) indoors, with outdoor harvests by the end of September.
