Banana OG Strain

Banana OG Strain: Overripe Banana Over OG Gas

The Banana OG strain is an indica-dominant hybrid built on OG Kush and a banana-scented parent — and it smells exactly like the name promises. Leafly describes "a smell and flavor of overripe bananas"; underneath sits the earthy pine and fuel of the OG side. The high creeps in slowly, settles into the body, and tends to end on the couch with a snack. It belongs to the heavy, evening corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also one of the more tangled family trees in cannabis. At least five breeders sell something called Banana OG, sources credit three different originators, and it's often confused with Banana Kush — a separate strain. Below: what each source actually says about its lineage, the terpenes behind the banana, how the high unfolds, how strong it is, how to use it, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.

Banana OG Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud and Evergreen list it at 70% indica / 30% sativa, and nearly every source describes a body-heavy, evening strain.
  • Ancestry: Most databases, including Leafly and AllBud, list OG Kush × Banana. The details underneath that simple label differ — see below.
  • Breeder: Weedmaps and Cannigma credit the original line to Orgnkid. Strainpedia says Rare Dankness is "commonly credited." Apothecary Genetics and Humboldt Seed Company both sell their own Banana OG lines.
  • THC: Leafly lists 21%; Cannigma's lab average is 21.36%; AllBud and Weedmaps give 23–27%; Humboldt Seed Company claims "over 25%" for its line.
  • CBD: Negligible — Cannigma averages 0.14%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG; AllBud adds about 1% CBN.
  • Aliases: Nana and Nana OG (per Cannigma). Leafly abbreviates it "Bng."

Who bred Banana OG? Four versions of the story

The sources genuinely disagree, so here's each claim with its source:

  • Orgnkid's original (Weedmaps, Cannigma): Weedmaps says "Banana OG is attributed to Orgnkid and described as Ghost OG crossed with a banana-scented phenotype of Sagarmatha's 60/40 line," often shortened to Ghost OG × Banana, and calls it "the legacy version behind many later Banana OG crosses." Ghost OG is itself a selected OG Kush cut, which is how the simple "OG Kush × Banana" label arose.
  • Apothecary Genetics: Weedmaps lists this version as a male OG × Banana.
  • Humboldt Seed Company: per SeedFinder, a stabilized seed line built from the "Classic Banana OG Clone × Banana OG S1 #21 × Banana OG Bx3," sold feminized only.
  • Flavour Chasers: an OG Kush × Skunk Haze cross sold under the same name — and the same pairing usually given for Banana Kush, which is where much of the confusion comes from.

Some retailers (Evergreen, and Cannigma's summary) simply describe Banana OG as Banana Kush × OG Kush. Bottom line: the jar you buy is almost always a clone-only cut or a seed line descended from the West Coast original — ask the seller which.

Banana OG vs Banana Kush: not the same strain

Banana Kush is Ghost OG × Skunk Haze, sold under the alias "Private Reserve," and it's usually described as more euphoric and giggly. Banana OG is the heavier OG-forward cousin: more pine and gas behind the fruit, a slower creep and a sleepier landing. They share an OG backbone and a banana nose, but Leafly, AllBud and Weedmaps all list them as separate strains.

Banana OG's offspring

Leafly lists Banana Punch and Banana Runtz among its children. Cannigma adds Bandana (× 707 Headband) and Banana Puff (× Joseph OG).

Banana OG Terpene Profile

Leafly lists limonene as Banana OG's dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and myrcene. Cannigma's lab averages put numbers on it: limonene 0.6%, myrcene 0.34%, caryophyllene 0.27% and pinene 0.12%. Not every cut agrees — Strainpedia and Evergreen list myrcene first, which fits the sleepy reputation. Expect the order to shift with phenotype and grower.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Limonene — sweet citrus-fruit lift, mood

Myrcene — earthy, ripe fruit, heavy body

Caryophyllene — pepper and spice, the OG backbone

Pinene — Christmas-tree pine

Relative profile from Cannigma's lab averages (limonene 0.6%, myrcene 0.34%, caryophyllene 0.27%, pinene 0.12%). Myrcene-dominant cuts read sleepier.

  • Limonene: The sweet, bright top note and a driver of the quick mood lift people report before the body takes over.
  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky with a ripe-fruit edge; it's commonly linked with Banana OG's heavy eyelids and couch-lock finish.
  • Caryophyllene: The peppery spice of the OG side — and the faint cinnamon some smokers pick up after grinding.
  • Pinene: The pine that AllBud's reviewers compare to Christmas trees.

What about the banana itself? No single terpene smells like banana. The "overripe banana" note comes from the whole chemistry of the plant — terpenes plus minor aromatic compounds — which is why it's strongest in fresh, properly cured flower and fades fastest when a jar dries out.

Appearance

Banana OG grows dense, sticky buds that can run large and spade-shaped. AllBud describes a light green color with brown hairs that grow quickly and darken toward harvest; Cannigma and Strainpedia note golden-yellow undertones, and most modern cuts show orange pistils under a heavy trichome coat. Some phenotypes come in chunky and rounded, others with more visible calyx stacking.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and the banana is immediate — overripe and candied rather than green, with tropical sweetness around it. Grind it and the OG side shows up: earthy pine, a faint fuel note and spice. Weedmaps notes banana with cinnamon and a dried-floral spice after grinding, and tallies its reported flavors as tropical (48%), sweet (30%) and earthy (22%). AllBud's list is fruity, sweet, tropical and woody, and its reviewers mention pine and "banana cream pie." Humboldt Seed Company describes its line as banana and petrol. The inhale is sweet fruit; the exhale is earthy pine with a dry, peppery OG finish.

Recreational Effects

Banana OG is a classic creeper. The first few minutes feel mild; the body high builds over the next 15–20 minutes and lands harder than the start suggests. On Leafly, from 627 ratings averaging 4.3 stars, the most-reported effects are:

  • Sleepy: the headline effect, especially at higher doses.
  • Relaxed: a heavy, warm body calm.
  • Tingly: a body buzz that spreads as the high builds.
  • Euphoric and happy: AllBud's reviewers describe a quick mood lift up top while the mind stays functional early on.
  • Hungry: AllBud and Weedmaps both flag a strong appetite — plan for snacks.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a gentle mood lift and loosening shoulders. This is the part that fools people into a second hit.
  • 15–60 minutes: the body high arrives — heavy, warm and tingly, with heavy eyelids.
  • 1–3 hours: a long, sleepy settle. At larger doses AllBud's reviewers report couch lock.

The Humboldt Seed Company line is described as more uplifting than the original cut, so effects vary with genetics as well as dose.

How Strong Is Banana OG?

Banana OG is a high-THC strain, though the numbers depend on who's testing which cut:

  • Leafly: 21% THC, about 1% CBG.
  • Cannigma lab averages: 21.36% THC, 0.14% CBD, 0.54% CBG.
  • Strainpedia: about 19–25%.
  • AllBud and Weedmaps: 23–27%.
  • Humboldt Seed Company: "over 25%" for its seed line.

Realistically, expect most good batches in the low-to-mid 20s. What makes it feel strong isn't just the number — it's the slow creep. People take a second or third hit before the first has landed, and that's when the heavy eyelids and couch lock show up. Wait a full 15–20 minutes before you decide it isn't working.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Banana OG batch against the 21–27% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Banana OG vs Similar Strains

  • vs OG Kush: the parent. OG Kush is more balanced and clearer-headed, with pine, lemon and fuel; Banana OG trades some of that clarity for fruit and a heavier, sleepier body.
  • vs Ghost OG: the OG cut named in Weedmaps' account of the original. Ghost OG is lemon-pine and more balanced; Banana OG is sweeter and more sedating.
  • vs Banana Kush: the strain it's most often confused with. Banana Kush (Ghost OG × Skunk Haze) is chattier and giggly; Banana OG is the heavier, more OG-forward evening smoke.
  • vs Strawberry Banana and Apples and Bananas: other banana-forward strains, both more dessert than gas. Pick these if you want the fruit without the OG weight.
  • vs Permanent Marker: a modern (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy hybrid with a loud candy-gas nose instead of banana. It matches Banana OG on potency and evening body, not on flavor — our closest in-stock match.

Who Banana OG Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening and nighttime smokers, fans of fruit-over-gas OGs, anyone who wants a heavy body high to end the day, and people who don't mind the munchies.

Poor fit: daytime productivity, beginners who tend to redose too fast, and anyone who wants a racy, energetic high. If you want the banana nose with a brighter, more upbeat lean, Straw Gua Mintz carries strawberry, guava and banana notes from $29.

How to Use Banana OG THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to keep the delicate banana top notes. Around 350–370°F holds the fruit and limonene; 380–400°F pulls out the heavier OG and myrcene side.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small hit, then wait a full 15–20 minutes — Banana OG is a creeper and the body high lands late. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. Don't stack hits during the first 15 minutes. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly, reported by about 31% of reviewers.
  • Stress: about 29% of Leafly reviewers.
  • Pain: about 25%, consistent with its heavy body effect; AllBud reviewers also mention muscle tension.
  • Sleep and appetite: the sleepy, hungry finish makes it a common pick at night and for people who have trouble eating.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's most common negatives.
  • Dizziness — also on Leafly's list, usually from too much too fast.
  • Couch lock and heavy eyelids — AllBud's reviewers warn about this at large doses.
  • Over-redosing — the most common complaint, because the high builds slowly.

Is Banana OG good for sleep? Many people use it that way — it's sedating, especially at higher doses. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Banana OG Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • The banana should be obvious. Fresh Banana OG smells like ripe fruit the moment the jar opens. Faint or grassy fruit means old or rushed flower.
  • Ask which cut. A good seller knows whether it's a clone-only West Coast cut or a seed line such as Humboldt's. "Banana OG" that smells like plain Skunk Haze may be the Banana Kush pairing.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Dense, sticky buds with trichomes inside the bud, not just a dusting on top.
  • A proper cure — sticky but not wet; hay or grass smell means it was rushed.

Growing Banana OG

Banana OG is generally considered a manageable grow — Cannigma calls it easy indoors or out, Strainpedia and Evergreen call it moderate. Its main trade-off is yield: AllBud says it's lower than average, offset by potency, while Humboldt Seed Company bred its line for high yields and mould resistance.

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors (Humboldt lists 55–65 days; Cannigma 7–9 weeks).
  • Yield: Cannigma estimates about 1.2 oz per square foot indoors and around 14 oz per plant outdoors; Evergreen gives 14–18 oz per square meter indoors.
  • Height and structure: short and bushy per Cannigma; medium with moderate stretch per Strainpedia. Topping and low-stress training help even the canopy.
  • Climate: warm and stable — around 70–80°F days, with humidity dropped to about 40–50% in flower to protect the dense buds.
  • Outdoors: harvest around early-to-mid October in the Northern Hemisphere (Humboldt lists October 1–10).
  • Odor: loud from mid-flower onward — plan carbon filtration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Banana OG indica or sativa?

Banana OG is an indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud and Evergreen list it at about 70% indica and 30% sativa, and its most-reported effects — sleepy, relaxed, tingly — are classic indica.

What are the effects of the Banana OG strain?

A quick mood lift followed by a slow-building, heavy body high. Leafly's most-reported effects are sleepy, relaxed and tingly; AllBud adds euphoric, happy and a strong appetite. At large doses it can bring heavy eyelids and couch lock.

How strong is Banana OG?

Leafly lists 21% THC and Cannigma's lab average is 21.36%, while AllBud and Weedmaps give 23–27%. It's a creeper, so it often feels stronger than the number — wait 15–20 minutes before taking more.

What is Banana OG a cross of?

Most sources list OG Kush × Banana. Weedmaps describes the original, credited to Orgnkid, as Ghost OG crossed with a banana-scented phenotype of Sagarmatha's 60/40 line. Some retailers call it Banana Kush × OG Kush.

Who bred Banana OG?

Weedmaps and Cannigma credit Orgnkid with the original line. Strainpedia names Rare Dankness, and Apothecary Genetics and Humboldt Seed Company sell their own Banana OG versions.

Is Banana OG the same as Banana Kush?

No. Banana Kush is Ghost OG × Skunk Haze (also called Private Reserve) and tends to be more euphoric and giggly. Banana OG is a separate, heavier OG-forward strain, listed separately on Leafly, AllBud and Weedmaps.

What does Banana OG taste like?

Overripe, candied banana and tropical sweetness on the inhale, then earthy pine, a faint fuel note and a peppery, sometimes cinnamon-like OG finish on the exhale.

What terpenes are in Banana OG?

Leafly lists limonene as dominant, followed by caryophyllene and myrcene. Cannigma's lab averages are limonene 0.6%, myrcene 0.34%, caryophyllene 0.27% and pinene 0.12%. Some cuts test myrcene-dominant.

Is Banana OG good for sleep?

Many people use it at night. Sleepy is its top-reported effect on Leafly, and higher doses tend to end in heavy eyelids and couch lock.

Is Banana OG good for anxiety?

About 31% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, the most-cited use on its page. Responses vary, so start with a small dose and wait for it to land.

Is Banana OG good for beginners?

It's manageable if you're patient, but its slow creep makes it easy to overdo. Take one small hit and wait 15–20 minutes before deciding on more.

How long does Banana OG take to flower?

About 8–9 weeks indoors — Humboldt Seed Company lists 55–65 days — with outdoor harvests around early-to-mid October.
