Cheddar Cheese Strain: The Savory Answer to Candy Weed
The Cheddar Cheese strain is what most people type when they're looking for Cheddar Cheeze, a modern indica-dominant cross from Phylos Bioscience that you'll find on dispensary shelves from brands like Grassroots, Rythm and Curio Wellness. The genetics are (Cake Mints × Platinum GSC) × Gorilla Diesel #3. The jar smells exactly like the name: aged cheddar, diesel and a little garlic, with a creamy mango note on the exhale that you don't expect. Labels usually land around 26–32% THC, and the high goes tingly, heavy and sleepy. For loud, savory flower, start with our THCA flower collection.
The name trips people up. There's an older, rarer European strain also called "Cheddar Cheese," a cousin of UK Cheese. Some guides also spell the dispensary strain "Cheese," and one retail listing gives it a completely different lineage. Below we sort out which Cheddar is which, what the potency numbers really say, how the high unfolds and how to grow it. We also cover how to tell a real bag from a mislabeled one.
A 360° look at Cheddar Cheese's frosty buds.
Quick Facts
In short: A modern, indica-dominant Phylos Bioscience cross, usually spelled Cheddar Cheeze on the jar. It smells of aged cheese, diesel and garlic, finishes with creamy mango, tests high (labels mostly 26–32% THC) and gives a tingly body high that ends sleepy.

- Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. Leafly files it as a hybrid but describes it as indica-dominant. AllBud lists 70% indica / 30% sativa, and Grassroots and Curaleaf labels call it an indica.
- Breeder: Phylos Bioscience, according to Weedmaps (bred by Phylos, distributed by Grassroots) and a GrowDiaries grow journal that names Phylos as the breeder. Leafly says "the original breeder of Cheddar Cheeze is unknown," so treat the Phylos credit as well supported but not universal.
- Ancestry: (Cake Mints × Platinum GSC) × Gorilla Diesel #3. Leafly, AllBud, Weedmaps, Curio Wellness, a Rythm menu listing and an ILGM seed listing all agree on that. Weedmaps' parent list writes "Platinum Cookies," which is the same plant as Platinum GSC.
- THC: 26% on Leafly and 28–32% on AllBud. Dispensary labels mostly read 27–32%, according to JointCommerce's roundups of menus.
- CBD: not listed by any of the strain databases. Expect it to be negligible.
- Aliases: Cheddar Cheeze (the brand spelling), Cheddar Cheese (the search spelling), and ChC/ChCh (Leafly's abbreviations).
What each parent brings
- Platinum GSC is a frosty Girl Scout Cookies descendant. It's the likely source of the heavy resin and the sweet, doughy undertone.
- Cake Mints is a dessert-and-mint cross. It probably accounts for the creamy side of the smoke. We didn't find a breeder-confirmed pedigree for this particular Cake Mints cut, so we won't guess at it.
- Gorilla Diesel #3 is the gas side of the family. The name points to Gorilla Glue and diesel genetics, and it fits the fuel note every source mentions. None of the sources we read lays out its exact parents.
Notice what isn't in there: no UK Cheese and no Blue Cheese. The cheese smell comes from how this cross expresses itself, not from a Cheese parent.
The lineage conflict
One Grassroots product page on Weedmaps lists the parents as Cake Mints and Platinum Cookies, then says in its own description that the strain is a cross of Blue Cheese and California Orange. That's a lone retail listing, and the strain databases and other brand listings don't back it up. We go with the six-source version above.
Who Phylos Bioscience is
Phylos is a science-driven cannabis breeder. According to ILGM, it spent about a decade mapping the cannabis genome and now uses DNA-marker-assisted breeding, which means it screens seedlings' DNA for target traits instead of growing every one out. In April 2024 it began selling feminized and autoflower seeds to the public exclusively through ILGM, and ILGM's catalog includes Cheddar Cheeze. Phylos built it as a deliberately savory cultivar, which Weedmaps describes as part of a "counter-movement" to candy-forward strains.
Cheddar Cheese Terpene Profile
No lab has published terpene percentages for Cheddar Cheeze that we could find, and Leafly doesn't list a dominant terpene. Two brand listings do agree on the top three, though. Curio Wellness names myrcene, linalool and limonene as dominant, and a Rythm menu listing says the strain is "commonly rich in limonene, linalool, and myrcene." One Leafly reviewer quoted beta-myrcene at "4.4" from a label but gave no unit, so we can't use it as a number. Still, it points the same way.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, musky, the heavy body
Linalool — floral, soft, calming
Limonene — citrus lift, the mango-bright top note
Estimated relative profile. Myrcene, linalool and limonene are named as dominant by Curio Wellness and a Rythm listing, but no lab percentages are published, so the bar lengths are our estimate.
- Myrcene: Musky and earthy. It's the terpene most associated with heavy, sleepy strains, and it fits the couch-lock finish reviewers describe.
- Linalool: Floral and soft. It's often credited with a calming effect, and it may explain why reviewers mention stress relief as often as they do.
- Limonene: Citrus brightness. In a nose this savory, it most likely helps carry the sweet mango and tropical notes on the exhale.
What about the cheese? No single terpene smells like cheddar. The sharp, sour, almost ammonia-like funk most likely comes from the whole blend of terpenes plus minor aroma compounds that strain databases don't measure. That's also why no one can tell you exactly which molecule makes it so loud.
Appearance
Cheddar Cheeze is a looker. AllBud describes large, dense, cone-shaped emerald buds with deep purple leaves, golden undertones, thick dark-orange hairs and chunky, purple-tinted trichomes. Weedmaps adds lime-green tones, and Leafly says the orange hairs are literally "cheddar-colored." Expect hard, heavy nugs with a lot of frost. That density is typical of the Platinum GSC side.
Aroma and Flavor
Open the jar and you get sharp, aged cheese first, then diesel and a little garlic. Leafly describes a ripe cheese aroma with ammonia, skunk and sweet tropical notes. Its flavor tags read cheese, blue cheese and diesel. AllBud calls the nose "herbal cheese" with "spicy diesel" and "sweet mango." Weedmaps lists aged cheddar, diesel fuel and garlic.
The surprise comes on the exhale. Almost every source mentions a creamy mango or tropical finish. ILGM's seed listing describes cheese and garlic "with the sweetness of mango," and one GrowDiaries grower summed up the taste as "mango/fuel." A Leafly reviewer said it reminded them of "the fancy popcorn at shops," and another compared the smell and flavor directly to the Cheese strain. If you like Garlic Breath or GMO but want a little sweetness, this is the lane.
Recreational Effects
Cheddar Cheese is an end-of-day strain. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.5 rating from 19 reviews, the most reported effects are:
- Relaxed: the headline effect, a heavy, full-body calm.
- Hungry: a strong appetite kick, so plan snacks.
- Creative and happy: a brief, upbeat "mental lift" before the body takes over, as one reviewer put it.
- Tingly: AllBud describes a tingle that starts in the limbs, spreads through the body and then settles in the mind.
- Sleepy: AllBud calls it a long-lasting, stony high meant to put you to sleep, and Weedmaps reviewers describe "sleepy contentment."
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a tingly body rush and a quick, happy lift in mood. Leafly reviewers call it a "heavy head high."
- 15–60 minutes: the peak. Your body gets heavy and calm, your appetite wakes up, and you may feel some quiet euphoria.
- 1–3 hours: a long taper into sedation. At higher doses, reviewers report couch lock.
This isn't a strain for a to-do list. Save it for the evening, a movie or the hour before bed.

How Strong Is Cheddar Cheese?
Cheddar Cheeze is a high-potency strain by any measure. Here are the published numbers:
- Leafly: 26% THC, "higher than average." Two Leafly reviewers reported batches at 31% and 29.91%.
- AllBud: 28–32% average. One AllBud reviewer reported a 32% batch.
- Dispensary labels: mostly 27–32%, according to JointCommerce's roundups of Grassroots and Curaleaf menus.
- Weedmaps: 80.2%. That's almost certainly a concentrate figure or a data error, since no flower tests that high. Ignore it.
A JointCommerce guide stretches the range to 37%, but that top figure has no lab behind it. Realistically, a good batch lands in the high 20s to low 30s. That's strong, and this is not a beginner strain. AllBud itself suggests it for experienced users.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Cheddar Cheese against the 26–32% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Cheddar Cheese vs Cheddar Cheeze vs UK Cheese: Which Is Which?
Three different things travel under similar names, and it matters which one is in your bag.
- Cheddar Cheeze (the one on US menus): Phylos Bioscience's (Cake Mints × Platinum GSC) × Gorilla Diesel #3. It's indica-dominant, tests in the high 20s to low 30s, and smells of cheese, diesel and mango. Most people searching "Cheddar Cheese strain" want this one, and JointCommerce's Grassroots and Curaleaf guides spell it with an "s."
- "Cheddar Cheese" (the older European plant): AllBud's separate "Cheddar Cheese" entry describes a rare, balanced 50/50 hybrid with unclear origins. It's "purportedly" a descendant of Skunk #1 and an original Afghani, and a "close cousin" of UK Cheese. It has light-green buds, dark-orange hairs, a sharp skunky cheese nose and a relaxing body high. AllBud's Cheddar Cheeze page explicitly says not to confuse the two.
- UK Cheese (Exodus Cheese): the original, a Skunk #1 phenotype kept alive as a clone in England since the late 1980s. AllBud warns that original Cheese is "sometimes mislabeled as Cheddar Cheese," which is part of why the names blur together.
There are also "Cheddar" strains that aren't related to any of these: Purple Cheddar, Cheddarwurst, Cheddar Head, Orange Cheddar, Cheddar Melt and a SappFire Seeds strain simply called "Cheddar." JointCommerce also has a "Cheddar Cheese by Amsterdam Finest Seeds" guide that names no parents, and we couldn't confirm that version anywhere else. If the label doesn't say Cheddar Cheeze, ask what the genetics are.
Why Cheddar Cheeze Stands Out on a Candy-Heavy Menu
Most modern dispensary flower chases candy, dessert and fruit. Weedmaps frames Cheddar Cheeze as a deliberate counter-move: a savory cultivar for people who miss funk. It sits in the same corner of the menu as GMO, Garlic Breath and Hashburger, which is one of the strains a Leafly reviewer named as a favorite alongside it. The difference is the finish. That creamy mango note makes Cheddar Cheese easier to like than a pure garlic bomb.
It's also unusually easy to find for a newer strain. Weedmaps, Dutchie and Ethos menus list it from Grassroots, Rythm, Curio Wellness, Find and Vertical, in big buds, smalls, mixed buds, minis and pre-rolls, and ILGM sells the seeds.
Cheddar Cheese vs Similar Strains
- vs UK Cheese: the original cheese strain. UK Cheese is sour skunk-cheese with a happier, more social high at around 18–20% THC. Cheddar Cheese is stronger, heavier and sweeter on the finish.
- vs Blue Cheese: Blue Cheese is UK Cheese × Blueberry, with berry over funk. Cheddar Cheese trades the berry for diesel and mango.
- vs Mac and Cheese: a MAC × Alien Cheese cross with a buttery, citrus-cheese nose and a more focused head. Cheddar Cheese is the sleepier of the two.
- vs Platinum Cookies: the grandparent. It's sweeter and doughier, with less funk.
- vs GMO and Garlic Breath: the savory-strain neighbors. They're more garlic and less cheese, and none of them has the mango.
- vs Mule Fuel: our featured in-stock pick, and honestly a cousin in spirit rather than in genetics. Both are loud, savory and heavy in the body, but Mule Fuel (GMO Cookies × Lurch) runs earthy garlic-fuel with no cheese or mango. For the concentrate side, our HBIC live rosin is the solventless option.
Who Cheddar Cheese Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced users, evening smokers, savory-flower fans who are tired of candy strains, people who want an appetite boost, and anyone winding down for sleep.
Poor fit: beginners (at 26–32% THC it's a lot), daytime or work use, and anyone who can't have a loud smell in the house. "Anxious" is also one of Leafly's reported negatives, so keep the dose low if THC makes you jumpy. For a savory, heavy evening flower on our shelf, Mule Fuel is the pick, from $59.
How to Use Cheddar Cheese THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to catch the mango under the cheese. Around 350–380°F keeps the sweet, creamy finish. At 390–410°F the diesel and funk take over and the body effect hits harder.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? This is potent flower. New or occasional users should take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits is plenty. With rosin, start with a rice-grain-sized dab. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. How you respond depends on dose, tolerance and the batch's chemistry.
- Anxiety: the most cited reason on Leafly (about 42% of reviewers), though "anxious" is also a reported negative. Dose matters.
- Stress: about 36% of Leafly reviewers. AllBud also lists stress.
- Insomnia: about 21% of Leafly reviewers. One called it a "great night time strain."
- Pain, cramps and muscle spasms: AllBud lists arthritis, chronic pain, cramps, inflammation and muscle spasms, and AllBud reviewers mention chronic pain.
- Low appetite and low mood: "hungry" is a top Leafly effect, and AllBud lists depression.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry eyes and dry mouth: the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Anxiety: reported by some Leafly reviewers. One said it was "easily managed" by pacing themselves.
- Heavy sedation: couch lock at higher doses, so don't plan anything afterward.
- Strong odor: this flower is loud in a jar, a room and a car.
Is Cheddar Cheese good for sleep? For most people, yes. It leans heavy and ends drowsy. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Cheddar Cheese Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Check the spelling and the genetics. Real Cheddar Cheeze is (Cake Mints × Platinum GSC) × Gorilla Diesel #3. If the seller can't name the genetics, you may be getting a different "Cheddar" or relabeled Cheese.
- Ask for a current third-party COA that names the lab and shows THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat claims of 35% or more without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Smell for cheese and mango. A good batch has sharp cheese and diesel up front and a sweet tropical finish. Flat, hay-like flower is old or rushed.
- Look for dense, frosty, purple-leafed buds with thick orange hairs. Airy, pale buds with little frost don't match the cultivar.
- Check the cure. It should be sticky but not wet, and it should break apart cleanly.
Growing Cheddar Cheese
Cheddar Cheeze is a manageable indoor plant with two real challenges: stretch and smell.
- Flowering: about 9 weeks per Leafly, or 8–9 weeks per Weedmaps. One GrowDiaries grower chopped at about 54 days of flower.
- Yield: 550–650 g/m² indoors per Weedmaps. Leafly calls yields "moderately high."
- Structure: dense, medium-height plants with notable stretch in early flower. The GrowDiaries run used topping, low-stress training, main-lining and a ScrOG net to keep the canopy short and even.
- Humidity: dense buds invite mold. Weedmaps advises keeping relative humidity below 45% in late flower.
- Odor: very strong, so run a carbon filter.
- Seeds: Phylos feminized seeds are sold through ILGM. Leafly also notes that the strain does well in mixed-light setups.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cheddar Cheese indica or sativa?
It's an indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud lists it as 70% indica / 30% sativa, and dispensary labels from Grassroots and Curaleaf call it an indica. Leafly files it as a hybrid but describes it as indica-dominant.
What is Cheddar Cheese a cross of?
The dispensary strain, Cheddar Cheeze, is (Cake Mints × Platinum GSC) × Gorilla Diesel #3, according to Leafly, AllBud, Weedmaps and several brand listings. One Grassroots product page says Blue Cheese × California Orange, but nothing else backs that up.
Is Cheddar Cheese the same as Cheddar Cheeze?
Usually, yes. 'Cheddar Cheeze' is how the breeder and brands spell it, and 'Cheddar Cheese' is how most people search for it. AllBud does list a separate, older European 'Cheddar Cheese,' a balanced hybrid said to descend from Skunk #1 and Afghani.
Is Cheddar Cheese the same as UK Cheese?
No. UK Cheese, also called Exodus Cheese, is a Skunk #1 phenotype from 1980s England. AllBud calls the older European Cheddar Cheese a 'close cousin' and notes that Cheese is sometimes mislabeled as Cheddar Cheese. The modern Cheddar Cheeze has no Cheese parent at all.
Who bred Cheddar Cheeze?
Phylos Bioscience, according to Weedmaps and a GrowDiaries grow journal. Grassroots and other brands grow and sell it. Leafly lists the breeder as unknown.
How strong is Cheddar Cheese?
It's strong. Leafly lists 26% THC, AllBud 28–32%, and dispensary labels mostly 27–32%. Reviewers have reported batches at 29.91%, 31% and 32%. It isn't a beginner strain.
What does Cheddar Cheese taste like?
Sharp aged cheese, diesel and a little garlic and skunk up front, then a creamy mango or tropical exhale. One grower summed it up as 'mango/fuel.'
What are the effects of Cheddar Cheese?
Leafly reviewers report relaxed, hungry and creative effects. AllBud adds tingly, happy and sleepy. Expect a body tingle and a brief mood lift that taper into heavy sedation.
Is Cheddar Cheese good for sleep?
For most people, yes. About 21% of Leafly reviewers cite insomnia, and AllBud describes a long-lasting, sleep-inducing high. Use it in the evening.
Is Cheddar Cheese good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 42% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' is also a reported negative. At this potency, start with a very small dose.
How long does Cheddar Cheese take to flower?
About 8–9 weeks indoors, per Leafly and Weedmaps. Weedmaps lists yields of 550–650 g/m² and recommends keeping humidity under 45% late in flower.
Where can I buy Cheddar Cheese THCA flower online?
