Cotton Candy Strain: Sweet, Floral and Hard to Pin Down
The Cotton Candy strain — sold just as often as Cotton Candy Kush — is a cross of Lavender and the South African sativa Power Plant, credited to the European seed company Delicious Seeds. It smells like spun sugar and fresh flowers, opens with a happy, euphoric lift and lands in a calm, relaxed body. It sits in the sweet, easygoing corner of our THCA flower collection conversation.
It is also one of the most inconsistently described strains on the internet. One database calls it 70% indica; the breeder's retailers call it 75% sativa. One lists cherry, another lemon and ginger. Below: where it actually comes from, why the descriptions disagree, how strong it really is, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.

- Type: Hybrid. AllBud lists it as a 70% indica-dominant hybrid; SeedFinder calls the Delicious Seeds version "mostly sativa," and seed retailer Zamnesia lists 75% sativa. Leafly simply says hybrid.
- Ancestry: Lavender × Power Plant. Per SeedFinder, the Lavender is the Soma Seeds cut (Super Skunk × Big Skunk Korean × Afghani Hawaiian) and the Power Plant is Dutch Passion's African sativa.
- Breeder: Delicious Seeds, which also sells a faster "Early Version" of Cotton Candy Kush.
- THC: Leafly lists 19%; AllBud 17–22%; Zamnesia about 20%. Weedmaps lists a much lower 6–18.3%.
- CBD: Under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Aliases: Cotton Candy Kush. Leafly's page is filed under that name.
Why it's "Kush" when it isn't really a Kush
Neither parent is an OG or Hindu Kush line. Lavender is a Skunk-and-Afghani blend, and Power Plant is a South African sativa selected in the Netherlands. The "Kush" tag shows up on menus for familiarity, not genetics — the strain is the same Lavender × Power Plant cross whether the jar says Cotton Candy or Cotton Candy Kush.
Why the indica vs sativa answer is so messy
Each parent pulls in the opposite direction. Lavender is a heavy, floral, purple-tinged relaxer; Power Plant is a tall, heady African sativa — South African, like Durban Poison. Depending on which side a phenotype favors, you get a stretchy, foxtailed, energetic plant or a calmer, denser, more floral one — and reviewers, databases and seed shops each describe the cut they saw. The breeder's own retailers lean sativa; consumer databases lean indica or balanced.
Not to be confused with
- Romulan Cotton Candy — a separate strain listed on AllBud.
- Federation Seed Company's Cotton Candy — a different breeder's release under the same name.
- Sour Cotton Candy and other brand names — usually unrelated products, not this cross.
A 2022 THC Classic entry from Fox Cannabis, by contrast, lists its "Cotton Candy" as the same Lavender × Power Plant cross. When a menu just says "Cotton Candy," ask the seller which genetics it is.
Cotton Candy Terpene Profile
Leafly's lab-sourced data lists myrcene as the most abundant terpene, followed by pinene and limonene. Grow guides such as Vivosun's instead name myrcene, caryophyllene and linalool — and linalool is the obvious candidate for the lavender-floral note inherited from the Lavender parent. Expect myrcene in front either way.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — sweet, earthy, the relaxed body
Pinene — fresh, clear-headed edge
Limonene — citrus-candy lift
Linalool — lavender-floral calm
Caryophyllene — light spice on the exhale
Typical relative profile for Cotton Candy — myrcene-led per Leafly. Floral, Lavender-leaning cuts often show more linalool.
- Myrcene: Sweet, earthy and musky; the backbone of the aroma and of the calm body feel later in the session.
- Pinene: A fresh, green edge that keeps the early part of the high clear rather than foggy.
- Limonene: The citrus-sweet top note behind the "candy" impression and the mood lift.
- Linalool: The lavender-floral note from the Lavender side, louder in purple-tinged cuts.
The "cotton candy" smell isn't one compound — it's sweet esters and terpenes stacked together, and how candy-like a batch reads depends heavily on the phenotype and the cure.
Appearance
Cotton Candy usually grows long, foxtail-shaped colas with a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, so the buds look stacked and spiky rather than golf-ball round. Colors run lime to forest green with orange pistils and a sugary trichome coat. Late in flower, many plants show what Delicious Seeds calls a metallic lavender hue in the leaves and sugar leaves — the Lavender parent showing through. Leafly's grow guide describes the structure as fluffy "like cotton candy," and the airier buds are part of why it's considered more mold-resistant than most.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar of a good cut and you get sweet, sugary candy first, then fresh-cut flowers and lavender. Leafly's description calls out "big, bold cherry flavors with undertones of flowers"; Weedmaps' editors list berry candy, ripe grape and cherry over an earthy base. The breeder side tells a different story — SeedFinder records Delicious Seeds' notes as sweet lemon, ginger and even cucumber, and Zamnesia describes a citric, fruity, pungent flavor. On the inhale, expect sugar and fruit; on the exhale, floral lavender and a light spice. Weedmaps' flavor tags also include a sharp, ammonia-like funk — the Skunk ancestry in the Lavender line.
Recreational Effects
Cotton Candy's high is a two-stage one. Leafly's effect meter rates it "mostly energizing," yet its top consumer-reported effects — from close to a thousand ratings — are calm ones:
- Relaxed: the most-reported effect; tension eases without heavy sedation at normal doses.
- Euphoric: an upbeat, giggly mood lift early in the session.
- Happy: a light, carefree headspace — the "sugar rush" people describe.
- Uplifted and focused: more noticeable in the sativa-leaning, Power Plant-heavy cuts.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a bright, upbeat head change — chatty and light.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — euphoric and happy, with the body starting to loosen.
- 1–3 hours: a calmer gear takes over. At higher doses the Lavender side gets heavier and sleepier.
That shape is why it fits late afternoon into evening better than first thing in the morning.

How Strong Is Cotton Candy?
Cotton Candy is a moderate strain by today's standards — not a 30%-THC headline grabber. The published numbers:
- Leafly: 19% THC, about 1% CBG, rated "higher THC than average."
- AllBud: 17–22% THC, under 1% CBD.
- Zamnesia (Delicious Seeds seed listing): about 20%.
- Vivosun: 15–22%.
- Weedmaps: 6–18.3% — the low outlier, likely reflecting weaker retail batches.
Delicious Seeds' "Early Version" of Cotton Candy Kush is marketed with THC above 23%, but treat seed-company potency claims as best-case numbers. For most people, a well-grown Cotton Candy is strong enough to feel clearly, without the overwhelm of modern heavy hitters.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Cotton Candy batch against the 15–22% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Is Cotton Candy a Good Strain? Why People Like It
Its appeal is balance and flavor rather than raw strength. It tastes like its name, the high is happy rather than racy, and it lets you wind down without flattening you. Leafly reviewers rate it highly (around 4.3 out of 5), and growers like it for its yield and toughness. If you want a knockout or a record-potency strain, look elsewhere.
Cotton Candy vs Similar Strains
- vs Lavender: the floral, heavy parent. Cotton Candy is sweeter, lighter and more upbeat thanks to Power Plant.
- vs Durban Poison: another South African sativa line and a reference point for Power Plant's energy. Durban is far more stimulating and less sweet.
- vs Zkittlez: the modern candy-fruit benchmark — more fruit punch, a calmer, more indica body.
- vs Sour Space Candy and Candy Punch: other "candy" names with different genetics; Sour Space Candy is a CBD-rich hemp line, so don't expect the same high.
- vs Strawberry Cough: similar sweet-fruit, happy, uplifted lane, more strawberry and more energetic.
- vs Strawberry 2.1: our closest in-stock match — a sativa-leaning Strawberry Guava cross with a sweet berry nose, myrcene and pinene up front, and an uplifting high balanced by a grounded body.
Who Cotton Candy Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: flavor chasers who like sweet and floral; moderate-tolerance smokers; anyone who wants a happy, social start that eases into relaxation.
Poor fit: people who want maximum potency, or a hard sleep strain at small doses. For something brighter and fruitier, Straw Gua Mintz is the sativa-leaning option on our shelf.
How to Use Cotton Candy THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to keep the delicate candy and floral notes. Around 340–370°F holds the sweetness; 380–400°F brings out more of the relaxing body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15 minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full happy-then-calm arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the top reason in Leafly reviews (about 34%).
- Anxiety: about 33% of Leafly reviewers — though "paranoid" appears among AllBud's negatives, so keep doses modest.
- Low mood: about 26% cite depression-related symptoms.
- Pain and headaches: AllBud lists chronic pain, headaches and migraines among common uses.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on both Leafly and AllBud.
- Dizziness — among Leafly's top negatives, usually from overdoing it.
- Paranoia — occasionally reported, more likely with the energetic cuts or at high doses.
Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
How to Judge a Good Bag of Cotton Candy
- Ask about the genetics. Lavender × Power Plant is the real thing. A different lineage means a different strain using the name.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Sweet and floral on the nose. If it smells like plain hay or just earth, the terpenes are gone.
- Foxtailed, frosty buds with orange pistils and maybe lavender hints — fluffy is normal for this strain, but it shouldn't crumble to dust.
- A proper cure. A slightly sticky, springy bud keeps the candy notes; overdried flower loses them first.
Growing Cotton Candy
Cotton Candy has a reputation as a forgiving, productive plant. Delicious Seeds' listings rate it easy and resistant to mold, pests and stress; Leafly's grow guide calls it moderate.
- Flowering: about 8–10 weeks indoors. SeedFinder lists around 65 days, Zamnesia 60–70 days, Leafly 7–9 weeks.
- Yield: high — up to about 550 g/m² indoors and 1,000+ g per plant outdoors, per Zamnesia's breeder listing.
- Height and structure: the Power Plant side stretches, so top early and support the long colas as they fill.
- Outdoors: harvest around mid to late October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Watch for: some growers on SeedFinder report hermaphrodite tendencies in feminized seeds — inspect plants in early flower.
- Seeds: Delicious Seeds' feminized Cotton Candy and the faster Cotton Candy Kush Early Version.
