Bubble Gum Strain: The Original Candy Weed
The Bubble Gum strain — also spelled Bubblegum strain — is the sweet one that started it all. It began as a clone in Indiana in the 1980s, was carried to Amsterdam, and became one of the most decorated seed lines of the 1990s through Serious Seeds and T.H. Seeds. Crack a jar and it smells like a fresh pack of pink bubblegum with berry and flowers underneath. The high is happy, euphoric and relaxed rather than racy or couchlocking, and the potency is moderate, usually 15–20% THC. Before Runtz, Zkittlez and every "candy" strain on today's menus, there was Bubble Gum. Its sweet, fruit-forward lane lives on in our THCA flower collection.
It's also a strain with a messy paper trail: three different "origin decades," at least two competing Dutch seed lines, an award count the breeder itself lists three different ways, and a confusing alias ("Bubba Gum") that has nothing to do with Bubba Kush. Below: the real history, what the potency numbers mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Bubble Gum's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid, and nobody agrees on the lean. AllBud lists it 80% indica; Leafwell a 60/40 indica lean; SeedFinder lists T.H. Seeds' Bubblegum as "mostly indica"; Serious Seeds' own grow report calls its version "mostly sativa." Leafly's effect meter reads it as more energizing than calming.
- Ancestry: An Indiana clone known as Indiana Bubble Gum. Leafly calls the exact genetics "a little unclear"; AllBud and Leafwell describe it as Indiana Bubblegum crossed with an unidentified indica.
- Seed lines: Serious Seeds' Bubble Gum (an inbred line) and T.H. Seeds' Bubblegum — both bred from the same Indiana plants.
- THC: Leafly 17%; AllBud 15–19%; Leafwell 15–20%. Top phenotypes are reported in the low-to-mid 20s.
- CBD: Low — usually under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Aliases: Bubblegum, Bubba Gum, Indiana Bubblegum (the original clone).
The origin story: Indiana to Amsterdam
According to Serious Seeds, Bubble Gum was bred by a grower in Indiana in the 1980s. In 1993 that grower handed three female plants to two Dutch outfits: Adam of T.H. Seeds, and Simon and Tony of Cerebral Seeds. Simon went on to found Serious Seeds (Tony founded Sagarmatha Seeds), and spent five generations stabilizing his selection into the inbred line he registered as Bubble Gum. Other accounts route the clone through New England — Massachusetts specifically, per one long-form guide — before it reached the Netherlands.
The dates don't fully line up. AllBud puts the origin in the 1970s, Serious Seeds in the 1980s, and some guides in the late '80s to early '90s. What every source agrees on: Indiana first, Holland second, and fame in the 1990s.
Serious Seeds vs T.H. Seeds: two Bubble Gums
- Serious Seeds Bubble Gum: an IBL (inbred line, not an F1 hybrid) — the only one on the Serious menu. Medium-tall, few branches, compact crystal-covered buds, 8–9 weeks. SeedFinder notes two known phenotypes: a compact, fast, indica-dominant #1 and a stretchier, slower, sativa-dominant #2.
- T.H. Seeds Bubblegum: the company's first release, in 1993. Bred for a fruity smell, a lingering flavor and a short, compact plant; listed as mostly indica, about 58 days of flower.
Most "Bubble Gum" you'll find today descends from one of these two lines — or from a breeder's cross that uses them — which is why two jars with the same name can smell and feel noticeably different.
Is "Bubba Gum" the same as Bubble Gum?
Leafly lists Bubba Gum as an alias. It's a nickname, not a Bubba Kush cross — if you want the heavy, hashy Bubba experience, that's Bubba Kush, a very different strain.
Bubble Gum Terpene Profile
Leafly's lab data lists caryophyllene as the most abundant terpene in Bubble Gum, followed by limonene and myrcene; other analyses add linalool and humulene in supporting roles, with total terpenes commonly in the 1.2–2.5% range. Caryophyllene is notable in its own right — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — soft spice that keeps the candy from cloying
Limonene — bright citrus read as candy sweetness
Myrcene — musky fruit, relaxed body
Linalool — floral top note
Typical relative profile for Bubble Gum — caryophyllene-led per Leafly. Leafwell lists limonene first; batches and seed lines vary.
- Caryophyllene: A faint peppery spice under the sugar — the reason Bubble Gum tastes like candy rather than syrup — and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Limonene: Bright citrus that the nose reads as fruit-candy sweetness and a big part of the happy, upbeat onset.
- Myrcene: Musky ripe fruit and the relaxed body that settles in later.
- Linalool: The floral edge Leafly reviewers pick up, and a calm, soft finish.
There's no single "bubblegum terpene." The pink-candy nose comes from the overall blend — and because terpenes are fragile, a rushed dry or a hot, open jar flattens Bubble Gum faster than most strains.
Appearance
Bubble Gum isn't a showy purple strain. Leafly's growers describe light green buds that range from fluffy to medium-dense, with a visible, sugary trichome frost; AllBud adds bright orange hairs and plenty of crystals. Serious Seeds describes compact, crystal-covered buds on a medium-tall, lightly branched plant. In cool night temperatures, some phenotypes flush pink or magenta on the sugar leaves — a fitting touch for a candy strain.
Aroma and Flavor
The nose is exactly what the name promises: old-school pink bubblegum, the kind that came in a waxed wrapper, layered over berry, floral and faint vanilla notes. Some cuts lean strawberry or watermelon. Break a bud and the sweetness gets louder, with a light earthy base underneath.
- Inhale: a burst of sweet candy and berry — Leafly lists flowery, sweet and berry as the top flavors.
- Exhale: creamy and fruity, per AllBud, with a soft spice and an earthy finish that keeps it from tasting artificial.
- Through a bubbler or vaporizer: the gum note holds up best at low temperatures; harsh, hot hits burn it off.
Recreational Effects
Bubble Gum is a happy strain. On Leafly, with nearly 1,300 reviews and a 4.1-star average, the top-reported effects are happy, relaxed and euphoric. It's balanced enough that some people use it in small doses through the day, while larger doses lean into the body and the couch.
- Happy and euphoric: a quick, light mood lift — social and giggly rather than racy.
- Relaxed: a calm, comfortable body high that doesn't usually lock you down.
- Creative and alert: Leafly notes many consumers say it helps them stay alert and creative at low doses.
- Hungry: appetite stimulation shows up often in reviews.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a gentle head lift and a brighter mood.
- 20–60 minutes: the peak — happy, social and euphoric, with the body loosening up.
- 1–2 hours: a slow settle into calm. AllBud describes "classic old-school" effects lasting up to about two hours. High doses can turn sleepy.

How Strong Is the Bubble Gum Strain?
By modern standards, Bubble Gum is moderate — and that's part of its appeal. Leafly calls its potency "higher THC than average" while noting it suits both new and experienced consumers. The published numbers:
- Leafly: 17% THC, about 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 15–19% THC.
- Leafwell: 15–20% THC.
- Long-form lab roundups: 17–20% typical, with top phenotypes around 22–25% and weaker cuts at 14–16%.
- Serious Seeds: rates its line simply as "very high" THC and low CBD.
So is Bubble Gum strong? It's strong enough to feel — especially if you're used to CBD flower or low-dose edibles — but it isn't one of today's 30%-class heavy hitters. Most of its reputation comes from flavor and a friendly, balanced high, not raw potency. How strong is Bubblegum Kush? Similar: AllBud lists that indica-leaning offspring at roughly 13–23% THC, with a heavier, sleepier finish.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Bubble Gum batch against the 15–20% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Is Bubble Gum award-winning?
Yes, though the exact tally is fuzzy. Serious Seeds credits its Bubble Gum with High Times Cannabis Cup placings in 1994, 1995 and 1999, First Prize Outdoor at the Spannabis Champions Cup in December 2005, and Soft Secrets' Plant of the Year in 2006 — and lists the total as 12, 13 and "more than 13" in different spots on the same page. SeedFinder separately records T.H. Seeds' Bubblegum taking 3rd in the Bio category at the 1995 High Times Cannabis Cup. Either way, few 1990s strains collected more hardware.
Bubble Gum vs Similar Strains
- vs Bubblegum Kush: Bubble Gum crossed with an unidentified Kush, per AllBud — about 80% indica, sweeter-sour, and noticeably sleepier. Pick it if you want the candy flavor at night.
- vs Strawnana (Strawberry Banana): a direct descendant — Banana Kush crossed with the "Strawberry" phenotype of Serious Seeds' Bubble Gum. More fruit, more potency, and a heavier body.
- vs Zkittlez and Runtz: the modern candy strains that took over Bubble Gum's lane. Both are typically more potent and more fruit-candy than gum; Leafly lists Bubble Runtz among Bubble Gum's offspring.
- vs Cotton Candy: another sweet, sugar-and-floral nose, but more of a calm, indica-leaning wind-down.
- vs Strawberry Glue: our closest in-stock match — Strawberry Diesel crossed with Gorilla Glue #4. Sweet strawberry candy up front with a gassy backbone Bubble Gum doesn't have, and a happy, euphoric lift. Expect it to hit harder than a classic Bubble Gum.
Who Bubble Gum Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: flavor chasers, anyone nostalgic for 1990s Dutch genetics, social sessions, and smokers who want a mood lift without a racing head or a heavy couchlock. Its moderate potency makes it one of the friendlier classics for newer consumers.
Poor fit: high-tolerance smokers looking for maximum strength, or anyone who wants pure gas and funk. If you want the sweet profile with less intensity than Strawberry Glue, Strawberry 2.1 is the lighter strawberry option on our shelf.
How to Use Bubble Gum THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to keep the candy nose intact. Around 340–370°F keeps the limonene sweetness; 380–400°F brings out the body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes. Leafly notes small doses work through the day; larger doses dry you out and lean sleepy, so keep water nearby. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and other strain databases, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 36%).
- Anxiety: about 28% of Leafly reviewers report help — though anxiety and paranoia also show up as negatives at high doses.
- Low mood: about 27% of reviewers, consistent with the happy, euphoric headline effect.
- Appetite, aches and sleep: AllBud and Leafly list chronic pain, nausea and insomnia among commonly reported uses; the appetite boost is frequently mentioned.
For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Headache or dizziness — occasionally reported, usually from overdoing it.
- Anxiety or paranoia — Leafwell lists mild paranoia with excessive use.
- Fidgety restlessness — a minority of reviewers find it stimulating rather than calming.
Is Bubble Gum good for sleep? At a normal dose it's more relaxed-and-happy than sedating; bigger doses (or Bubblegum Kush) are the sleepier route. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Bubble Gum Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- The nose is the test. Real Bubble Gum smells like candy the second the jar opens. If it smells like hay or plain grass, the terpenes are gone.
- Ask about the line. Serious Seeds, T.H. Seeds or a named cross? A good seller knows.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. A "Bubble Gum" claiming 35% deserves skepticism. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Frost and freshness: visible trichomes, sticky but not wet, and a slow cure. Dense Bubble Gum buds are prone to mold if dried poorly — check the centers.
- Price sanity: Leafly lists an average of about $10 per gram for dispensary Bubble Gum, for reference.
Growing Bubble Gum
Bubble Gum is generally rated easy to moderate. Leafly lists it as easy with a high yield; Leafwell says it needs moderate experience. Its quirks are a big stretch and two distinct plant structures.
- Flowering: 8–9 weeks indoors (53–63 days per Serious Seeds; Leafly lists 7–9 weeks). Some phenotypes reward 63–70 days with a louder candy nose.
- Yield: 300–450 g/m² indoors per Serious Seeds and SeedFinder; T.H. Seeds' line is listed at 350–500 g/m².
- Height and structure: medium-tall with few branches, and it can "soar during the stretch." Leafly's growers note one low-branching pheno suited to sea-of-green and a branchier pheno that takes longer but yields more.
- Climate: warm and slightly humid in veg, drier in late flower — dense colas invite mold.
- Outdoors: harvest mid-to-late October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Seeds: Serious Seeds sells regular (not feminized) Bubble Gum; T.H. Seeds' Bubblegum is listed as feminized.
Is Bubble Gum THCA Flower Legal?
