Candy Kush Strain

Candy Kush Strain: Sweet Lemon Candy Over a Kush Backbone

The Candy Kush strain — more often spelled Kandy Kush — is an indica-leaning hybrid from Reserva Privada, the boutique line of DNA Genetics, bred by crossing OG Kush with Trainwreck. It smells like lemon candy over earthy kush, tastes sweet with notes of pear and honey, and delivers a happy, relaxed high that can tip into sleepy at higher doses. Leafly lists it at 18% THC with more than 600 ratings. It fits the sweet-and-kushy corner of our THCA flower collection.

The name is the confusing part. "Candy Kush" and "Kandy Kush" usually mean the same Reserva Privada strain, but Nirvana, Royal Queen Seeds and Auto Seeds all sell their own Candy Kush, and at least one database lists a different family tree entirely. It's also not the same thing as Candyland or Candy Cane. Below: which Candy Kush is which, the terpenes, what the high feels like, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Candy Kush Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. Leafly and SeedFinder call it mostly indica and note sativa-leaning phenotypes with more Trainwreck structure; Leafwell lists 60% indica; AllBud lists its Kandy Kush entry as an even 50/50.
  • Ancestry: OG Kush × Trainwreck. SeedFinder traces the OG side to the clone-only "Christopher Wallace" cut, and Leafly says the same cut is the likely parent.
  • Breeder: Reserva Privada, the DNA Genetics project. Leafly describes Kandy Kush as a favorite of that line.
  • THC: Leafly 18%; SeedFinder 18.5% (16.5% THCA in its breeder data); AllBud 15–21%; Leafwell 14–18%.
  • CBD: Usually negligible — Leafly lists 0%, SeedFinder 0.2%.
  • Aliases: Kandy Kush, Candy Kush, KK.

The breeder's own description

Reserva Privada's notes, as quoted on SeedFinder, sum up the cross in one line: a "classic stretch of the OG Kush that bulks up and fills out like the TW to give you OG flavor and TW nugs." The breeder adds that "heavy crystal production comes on after the 5th week" of flowering and doesn't stop. That's the logic of the strain — OG Kush's lemon-fuel flavor and body, packed into Trainwreck's chunkier, faster-filling buds.

Candy Kush vs Kandy Kush — and the other versions

Search "Candy Kush" and you'll land on pages for Kandy Kush; Leafly and Weedmaps list Candy Kush as an alias of the Reserva Privada strain. But the name has more than one set of roots:

  • Kandy Kush (Reserva Privada / DNA Genetics): OG Kush × Trainwreck. The original and the one most dispensary menus mean.
  • Candy Kush (Nirvana Seeds): the breeder describes it as an O.G. Kush × Trainwreck selection too, flowering in 7–9 weeks with sweet, fruity, floral candy flavor and a slight citrus edge. SeedFinder's family tree for it, oddly, shows Blue Dream × OG Kush.
  • Candy Kush (AllBud): AllBud keeps a separate "Candy Kush" entry listed as OG Kush × Blue Dream, 60% indica, and warns not to confuse it with Kandy Kush.
  • Candy Kush Express (Royal Queen Seeds): a fast-flowering line from Sweet Special × Royal Kush, per Zamnesia's listing — about 60% indica and 18% THC. Different parents, same candy-sweet goal.
  • Candy Kush Auto (Auto Seeds): an autoflower from Californian Kush genetics and Auto Pounder, per Weedmaps.

Bottom line: if a jar says Candy Kush with no breeder, it's most likely the Reserva Privada cross or a seed-grown version of it. Ask the seller.

What it's not

Candyland is Ken Estes' Granddaddy Purple × Bay Platinum Cookies — an energetic daytime strain with no Kush-Trainwreck link. Candy Cane is Crop King's AK-47 × Mango × White Widow autoflower with a minty profile. Cotton Candy Kush is another unrelated name. The one genuine descendant on our encyclopedia is Candy Gas — Crockett Family Farms' Gas Candy is Kandy Kush × OG #18. Leafly also lists CBD Kush (CBK) as a Kandy Kush offspring.

Candy Kush Terpene Profile

Leafly lists limonene as Candy Kush's dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and caryophyllene; Leafwell names the same three. That's a textbook OG-family trio — limonene for the lemon-candy top note, myrcene for the earthy, relaxing base, caryophyllene for the peppery kush finish. Royal Queen Seeds lists ocimene for its Candy Kush Express, which reads sweeter and more herbal.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Limonene — lemon candy, bright lift

Myrcene — earthy, relaxed body

Caryophyllene — pepper, kush finish

Pinene — pine, Trainwreck edge

Typical relative profile for Candy Kush — limonene-led per Leafly. Trainwreck-leaning cuts can show more pine and spice; Candy Kush Express leans on ocimene.

  • Limonene: The lemon-drop sweetness that earns the "candy" name, and part of the happy, mood-lifting onset.
  • Myrcene: Earthy, musky and herbal — the terpene most associated with Candy Kush's relaxed, sometimes sleepy body.
  • Caryophyllene: The peppery, kushy exhale from the OG side. A 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
  • Pinene: A minor note that shows up more in Trainwreck-dominant phenotypes, adding pine and a clearer head.

The "candy" isn't a single compound — it's limonene's lemon riding on top of a sweet, fruity base that Leafly's reviewers describe as pear and honey.

Appearance

Reserva Privada promised "OG flavor and TW nugs," and that's what a good Candy Kush looks like: dense, medium-sized, slightly lumpy buds in lime to olive green, threaded with orange pistils and buried in milky white trichomes. AllBud describes "popcorn-shaped" olive nugs with a heavy trichome coat and an occasional purple undertone; SeedFinder notes the Growers Choice line produces white, sugar-coated buds that can blush pink when night temperatures drop. The frost is the point — the breeder says resin keeps building from week five to harvest.

Aroma and Flavor

Crack a jar and the first hit is sweet citrus — lemon candy, a little orange peel — with earthy kush and pepper underneath. Break a bud and the OG side gets louder: herbal, piney, faintly fuel-like. The inhale is sweet and sugary; Leafly's top flavors are pear, sweet and honey, while AllBud's reviewers add berry and citrus. The exhale is smooth earth and spice. Nirvana's version leans more fruity-floral; Candy Kush Express reads earthier and more savory. SeedFinder's one-word aroma note for the Reserva Privada original? "Sugar."

Recreational Effects

Candy Kush starts with a happy, slightly euphoric lift and settles into body relaxation — the classic OG arc, softened a little by the Trainwreck side. On Leafly the top reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect — a calm, loose body that deepens with dose.
  • Hungry: a strong appetite kick; plan your snacks.
  • Happy: a light, sociable mood lift in the first hour.

Sources don't fully agree on the energy level. Leafly's own write-up calls the effects "mostly energizing" even though relaxed tops its effect list, and AllBud describes a slow-building euphoria that can end in sleepiness. In practice, phenotype and dose decide it: Trainwreck-leaning cuts and small doses feel brighter and more social, while OG-leaning cuts and bigger doses head for the couch.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a gentle head change and a lift in mood; it builds rather than slams.
  • 20–60 minutes: the peak — happy, relaxed and hungry, with a warm, heavy body.
  • 1–3 hours: a slow fade. At higher doses, this is where sleepiness shows up.

Because it creeps a little, wait the full 10–15 minutes before going back for more.

How Strong Is Candy Kush?

Candy Kush is a mid-to-high potency strain, not a record-chaser. The numbers vary by source and version:

  • Leafly (Kandy Kush): 18% THC, 0% CBD — described as higher than average.
  • SeedFinder (Reserva Privada data): 18.5% THC, 16.5% THCA, 0.2% CBD.
  • AllBud: 15–21% for Kandy Kush; its separate Candy Kush entry claims 20–30%.
  • Leafwell: 14–18%.
  • Nirvana's Candy Kush: 14–19%. RQS Candy Kush Express: about 18%.

So for most Candy Kush you'll find, expect THC in the high teens to low 20s — enough for a real body effect, but more forgiving than today's 30%-plus headline strains. A heavy OG-leaning cut at the top of that range will still floor a low-tolerance smoker. There are also CBD-rich descendants: Leafly lists CBD Kush (CBK) as an offspring, and those cuts test far lower in THC.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Candy Kush against the 15–21% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Candy Kush vs Similar Strains

  • vs OG Kush: the parent. OG Kush is gassier and heavier; Candy Kush is sweeter, with chunkier buds and a softer edge.
  • vs Trainwreck: the other parent — a fast, heady, sativa-leaning hitter. Candy Kush keeps a little of its lift but lands in the body.
  • vs Candy Gas: a true descendant. Crockett's Gas Candy crosses Kandy Kush with OG #18, adding more fuel to the sweetness.
  • vs Lemon Kush: a similar lemon-over-kush profile from different parents, with a more giggly, uplifted high.
  • vs Candyland and Candy Cane: name-alikes only. Candyland is a sativa-leaning GDP × Cookies cross; Candy Cane is a minty AK-47 × Mango × White Widow autoflower.
  • vs Straw Gua Mintz (our closest match): Strawberry Guava × Kush Mints — candy-sweet fruit up front and a kushy, minty exhale. It shares the sweet-over-kush idea but runs brighter and more sativa-leaning, so it's a daytime take on the profile. For a heavier, gassy evening body, Mule Fuel is the better pick on our shelf.

Who Candy Kush Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening smokers who like sweet flavors and a relaxed body; anyone who wants an OG-family strain that's a little gentler than straight OG; people looking for an appetite nudge.

Poor fit: anyone who needs to stay sharp for hours, or a smoker chasing maximum potency. For a lighter, more uplifting option on our shelf, Strawberry 2.1 is the easygoing pick; for a sweet indica dessert, try Blueberry Pancakes.

How to Use Candy Kush THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the candy before the kush takes over. Around 350–375°F keeps the lemon-sweet limonene; 390–410°F brings out the peppery OG weight.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15 minutes — it builds slowly. Regular users usually find two or three hits deliver the full relaxed arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 37%).
  • Anxiety: about 29% — at low doses; high doses can do the opposite.
  • Pain: about 29%, consistent with the strain's heavy body reputation.
  • Appetite and sleep: "hungry" is one of its top effects, and AllBud's reviewers often mention sleep at higher doses.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
  • Dizziness — Leafly's third-listed negative, usually from overdoing it.
  • Anxiety or paranoia — less common, but reported by some users at high doses.
  • Couch-lock and sleepiness — not a problem at night, but plan around it.

Is Candy Kush good for sleep? At a full dose, many people find it is — the myrcene-heavy body and slow fade make it an evening strain. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Candy Kush Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask which Candy Kush. Reserva Privada Kandy Kush, Nirvana, or Candy Kush Express? A good seller knows. "Candy Kush" with no breeder is a guess.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. A 30% claim on a strain that usually tests in the high teens needs paperwork. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Sweet lemon and kush. Real Candy Kush has both — candy on top, earthy pepper underneath. Pure earth with no sweetness suggests an old or misnamed jar.
  • Dense, chunky, frosty buds — the "TW nugs" the breeder promised, with resin inside the bud, not just on the surface.
  • A proper cure — a hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and the candy notes are the first thing to go.

Growing Candy Kush

Candy Kush is a forgiving, productive plant. It stretches like an OG early in flower, then bulks up like Trainwreck, so plan for the stretch and train it.

  • Flowering: about 9–10 weeks for Reserva Privada's version (SeedFinder lists about 67 days); Nirvana lists 7–9 weeks; Candy Kush Express is 7–8 weeks; Candy Kush Auto runs about 65–75 days seed to harvest.
  • Yield: Reserva Privada lists 400–500 g/m²; Leafly 450–550 g/m²; Nirvana up to 500–600 g/m² in a sea of green; RQS lists 450–500 g per plant outdoors.
  • Height: indica phenotypes stay compact — Leafwell cites about 60 cm — while sativa-leaning phenotypes run taller. RQS lists 60–100 cm indoors and 130–160 cm outdoors for Express.
  • Training: SCROG and low-stress training suit its OG-style stretch.
  • Outdoors: harvest in September to early October in the Northern Hemisphere; cool nights can bring out pink hues.
  • Recognition: SeedFinder lists a 3rd place for Reserva Privada's Kandy Kush at the 2012 Spannabis Champions Cup (outdoor).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Candy Kush indica or sativa?

Candy Kush is an indica-dominant hybrid. Leafly and SeedFinder call it mostly indica, Leafwell lists about 60% indica, and AllBud lists its Kandy Kush entry as 50/50. Trainwreck-leaning phenotypes feel more uplifting; OG-leaning ones are heavier.

Is Candy Kush the same as Kandy Kush?

Usually, yes. Leafly and Weedmaps list Candy Kush as another name for Reserva Privada's Kandy Kush (OG Kush × Trainwreck). But Nirvana, Royal Queen Seeds and Auto Seeds sell their own Candy Kush versions, and AllBud keeps a separate Candy Kush entry with Blue Dream in the lineage.

What is Candy Kush a cross of?

The original Reserva Privada (DNA Genetics) version is OG Kush × Trainwreck, with the OG side traced to the Christopher Wallace cut. Royal Queen Seeds' Candy Kush Express is Sweet Special × Royal Kush, and Candy Kush Auto uses Californian Kush and Auto Pounder.

How strong is Candy Kush?

Most sources put it in the high teens: Leafly 18%, SeedFinder 18.5%, AllBud 15–21% and Leafwell 14–18%. Some batches test higher, so check the COA.

What are the effects of Candy Kush?

Leafly's top reported effects are relaxed, hungry and happy. It starts with a mood lift and settles into a heavy, calm body that can turn sleepy at higher doses.

What does Candy Kush taste like?

Sweet and candy-like, with lemon on the nose and pear and honey on the palate per Leafly, finishing with earthy, peppery kush.

Is Candy Kush good for sleep?

At a full dose, many people find it is. Small doses are more social and happy; bigger doses bring the sleepy, couch-lock side.

Is Candy Kush good for anxiety?

About 29% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety and 37% with stress, but individual response varies and high doses can cause anxiety. Start low.

Is Candy Kush good for beginners?

It's one of the more approachable OG-family strains thanks to high-teens THC, but it still builds slowly. Take one small puff and wait 15 minutes.

What's the difference between Candy Kush, Candyland and Candy Cane?

They're unrelated. Candy Kush is OG Kush × Trainwreck; Candyland is Granddaddy Purple × Bay Platinum Cookies; Candy Cane is an AK-47 × Mango × White Widow autoflower.

How long does Candy Kush take to flower?

About 9–10 weeks for Reserva Privada's version, 7–9 weeks for Nirvana's, and 7–8 weeks for Candy Kush Express. Candy Kush Auto finishes about 65–75 days from seed.
