Fatso Strain

Fatso Strain: Colorado's Heavyweight GMO Gas

The Fatso strain is an indica-dominant cross of GMO Cookies and Legend OG, bred by Colorado's Cannarado Genetics. It smells like garlic, diesel and ammonia, tests in the high 20s for THC, and does exactly what the name promises: a brief spark behind the eyes, then a heavy, sinking body high that tends to end in sleep. Leafly calls it "great for hash," and Denver extract makers agree — a lot of the Fatso people meet comes as rosin, badder or live resin. It belongs to the gassy, nighttime corner of our THCA flower collection.

Fatso is also a strain with gaps in its paperwork. Most sources credit Cannarado, one credits a different breeder; some list it as a seed line, others say it's clone-only now; and the two biggest strain databases disagree on its lead terpene. Below: what's documented, who says what, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to tell a real Fatso from a lookalike.

A 360° look at Fatso's frosty buds.

Fatso Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant. Leafly lists it as an indica; AllBud and Prime Cuts Nursery say about 70% indica / 30% sativa. Weedmaps files it under hybrids but calls it "an indica-dominant cross."
  • Parents: GMO Cookies × Legend OG. GMO Cookies — the same garlic-gas GMO — is Chemdawg (Chem D) × the Forum cut of Girl Scout Cookies, per SeedFinder. Legend OG is a clone-only cut of OG Kush.
  • Breeder: Cannarado Genetics — see below.
  • THC: AllBud 26%; Leafly 28%; SeedFinder about 28% (28–30% total cannabinoids); Prime Cuts "26–30%+."
  • Minor cannabinoids: Leafly lists about 1% CBG; SeedFinder mentions trace CBG and THCV. CBD is negligible.
  • Aliases: Fatso OG and Fatso Kush (AllBud, Weedmaps), plus Fatz (Prime Cuts). AllBud also keeps a separate "Fatso 2" listing with the same GMO Cookies × Legend OG parents.

Who bred Fatso?

The weight of the sources points one way. Leafly says the cross "comes from Colorado breeder Cannarado," and SeedFinder, Weedmaps, Prime Cuts and Denver's Westword all agree. Cannarado has been breeding in Colorado since the late 1990s, per SeedFinder, and is also behind Grape Pie, Lava Cake and Sundae Driver.

The outlier is a New Jersey dispensary page (The Library) that credits Dojo Seed Co. We found nothing else supporting that, so treat Cannarado as the breeder and the Dojo credit as most likely a mix-up.

Seed or clone?

This is murkier. SeedFinder lists Fatso as a feminized-seed release. Weedmaps says it "seems to be a rare strain possibly discontinued by the breeder" and available as clones only, and Prime Cuts says Cannarado discontinued the original seed, making it "clone-only in most markets." SeedFinder notes Fatso seeds from other sellers (Sonoma Genetics, SunWest, RocketSeeds) and admits it's unclear how they compare to the original; Phinest Cannabis, a California nursery, sells the original cut as clones. Practical takeaway: flower labeled Fatso may come from the true cut or from a seed-grown relative.

What Fatso passed on

SeedFinder counts about 30 direct descendants; Prime Cuts says Cannarado alone has used it in at least 24 documented crosses. The best known:

  • Cheetah Fat: Cheetah Piss × Fatso.
  • Da Capo: Crescendo × Fatso.
  • Big Hunk (Fatso × Papaya), Fatty Cakes (Fatso × London Pound Cake), Fat Billy, Fat Chem (Chemdog × Fatso), plus Leafly's FtK Fat Kitty and FD Funk Dumpster.

Fatso Terpene Profile

The sources agree on the cast but not the order. Leafly lists limonene first, then caryophyllene and myrcene. SeedFinder puts caryophyllene first, with limonene and humulene close behind and possible high linalool and myrcene, and estimates total terpenes at 2–3% — a loud jar by any standard. Prime Cuts and The Library both rank caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene as the big three. Caryophyllene is the one worth knowing: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Caryophyllene — pepper, fuel, the GMO bite

Limonene — sour grapefruit-rind top note

Myrcene — earthy, musky, the sleepy body

Humulene — woody, hoppy, hash-like

Typical relative profile for Fatso — caryophyllene-led per SeedFinder; Leafly's lab data puts limonene first. Exact ratios vary by cut, grower and cure.

  • Caryophyllene: Peppery, spicy and fuel-edged — the bite under the garlic, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Limonene: The sour citrus behind the "dried grapefruit rind" note in SeedFinder's and Westword's descriptions, and part of the short mood lift at the start.
  • Myrcene: Earthy, herbal and musky — the terpene most associated with heavy, sleepy strains.
  • Humulene: Woody and hoppy; it fits the coffee, wood and hash notes AllBud and Weedmaps report.

Prime Cuts adds linalool and pinene as secondary terpenes — the faint lavender SeedFinder tastes and the pine Prime Cuts smells when the buds are broken open.

Appearance

Fatso lives up to its name: big, chunky, dense buds. AllBud describes "chunky, spade-shaped" nugs in minty green with thick light-orange hairs and a dusty coat of milky-amber trichomes. Westword's Denver review calls them long, dense and resinous with a wintergreen color. Prime Cuts says flowers run olive to forest green, with purple streaks possible when late-flower nights drop into the low 60s °F. Well-grown Fatso is greasy to the touch — the resin is why hash makers want it.

Aroma and Flavor

Fatso is gas first. Leafly's top flavors are ammonia, diesel and pungent; Weedmaps' users report earthy (44%), diesel (36%) and chemical (20%). SeedFinder describes "a strong diesel kick" with subtler dried grapefruit rind, earthy hash, bubble gum and skunk underneath; Westword picked up the same fuel, grapefruit rind and hashy bubble gum. AllBud's listing leans the other way — coffee, herbal, spicy and woody — while its reviewers report gas, garlic, hash and "funky cheese." Prime Cuts sums up the nose as "the definition of gas," with garlic-diesel funk, coffee and earthy mushroom.

Put together: crack the jar and it's diesel and garlic, then a sour citrus-rind edge and earthy hash. The smoke is the weak spot. SeedFinder calls the flavor "a harsh, resinous, ammonia-like punch," and Westword says flavor isn't the strain's main appeal. People buy Fatso for the effect, not the taste.

Recreational Effects

Fatso is a nightcap. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.7-star average across 120 ratings, the top reported effects are:

  • Sleepy: the headline. Leafly says it's best enjoyed close to a couch; SeedFinder says it ends with "passing out under her deep effect."
  • Relaxed: heavy, full-body calm and couch-lock — SeedFinder says even the munchies won't get you up.
  • Tingly: a body buzz that arrives with the weight.
  • Euphoric and happy: AllBud describes uplifting, happy feelings up front before the body takes over.
  • Hungry: The Library and Westword both flag strong munchies.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: what SeedFinder calls "a dash of cerebral curiosity" — a short euphoric lift.
  • 15–45 minutes: the body arrives. Heavy limbs, a quiet mind, and the snacks come out.
  • 1–3 hours: a long, sedated plateau. SeedFinder and Westword both put the run at about two to three hours, usually ending in sleep. Westword's advice: "Reserve Fatso for therapeutic purposes or sleep aid, and little else."

A small dose is a couch-and-movie night. A big one is bedtime, whether you planned it or not.

How Strong Is Fatso?

Very — and every source says so. The published numbers cluster in the high 20s:

  • Leafly: 28% THC, about 1% CBG — "higher THC than average."
  • SeedFinder: about 28% THC, 28–30% total cannabinoids.
  • AllBud: 26% average (its separate "Fatso 2" listing says 29–30%).
  • Prime Cuts Nursery: "26–30%+."
  • The Library (NJ dispensary): 25–33%.

Treat the 33% ceiling as a best-batch number, not an average. More than the number, it's the effect that makes Fatso feel strong: a caryophyllene-and-myrcene-heavy profile on top of GMO and OG genetics lands harder and sleepier than a fruit-forward strain at the same THC. The Library calls it "strictly for experienced users with high tolerance," and SeedFinder warns that low-tolerance users are the ones most likely to hit paranoia or anxiety.

Is Fatso a good strain? For what it's built for, yes — both Leafly (4.7 across 120 ratings) and AllBud (4.7) rate it highly. It's a bad pick if you want flavor or daytime energy, and a very good one if you want heavy gas and a reliable path to bed.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Fatso batch against the 26–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Fatso vs Similar Strains

  • vs GMO: the garlic parent. Fatso keeps GMO's savory garlic-gas nose and adds Legend OG's OG weight.
  • vs Legend OG: the OG parent. Legend OG is gas, pine and tart citrus; Fatso trades the pine for garlic and ammonia and hits harder.
  • vs Mule Fuel: a half-sibling in spirit — GMO × Lurch from ThugPug Genetics. Same GMO garlic-diesel backbone, a skunkier, more chemical edge, and the same heavy, sleepy landing. It's our closest match on the shelf.
  • vs Garlic Breath: another GMO-family strain with the same savory garlic funk — a good pick if the garlic is what you're after.
  • vs GMO Root Beer: a GMO cross with a sweeter twist on the same garlic-gas base.
  • vs Permanent Marker: a modern (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy hybrid with a chemical-gas nose. It matches Fatso on potency and evening body, not on garlic.
  • vs Cheetah Piss: one of Fatso's crossing partners (they made Cheetah Fat). Cheetah Piss is the opposite mood — sharp, ammonia-citrus funk and an energetic, giggly high.

Who Fatso Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: gas and garlic fans; experienced smokers with a real tolerance; anyone who wants a dependable end-of-day strain; people who make or love hash and rosin.

Poor fit: newcomers, daytime use, anyone who needs to stay productive, and flavor chasers who want something sweet. For something lighter and fruitier, Dayglow Mousse is the brighter option on our shelf.

How to Use Fatso THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: a cleaner way to take the edge off Fatso's harsh, resinous smoke. Around 350–380°F keeps the sour citrus and diesel top notes; 390–410°F brings out the heavier, peppery, sedating side.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait a full 15–20 minutes — the body builds after the head. Regular users usually find two or three hits plenty. Use it an hour or so before bed, at home, with nothing left to do. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, SeedFinder and AllBud — not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety and stress: the top Leafly reports — anxiety about 27%, stress about 21% — though high doses can cause anxiety in sensitive users (see below).
  • Pain: about 16% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud adds chronic pain, cramps and muscle spasms, and Westword calls the body effect strong enough for pain relief.
  • Sleep: SeedFinder and Prime Cuts list sleep issues and insomnia, in line with the sleepy headline effect.
  • Appetite loss: listed by SeedFinder and Prime Cuts, consistent with the munchies.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry eyes and dry mouth — Leafly's most common negatives.
  • Anxiety or paranoia — on Leafly's and SeedFinder's lists, mostly in low-tolerance users who take too much.
  • Heavy couch-lock and dissociation — SeedFinder lists both; AllBud reviewers describe a "bowling ball" head. Don't plan anything afterward.
  • Harsh smoke — SeedFinder and Westword both call it harsh; a vaporizer or a slow, well-ground joint helps.
  • Dizziness — The Library lists it, usually from standing up fast.

Is Fatso good for sleep? That's what most people use it for. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is It Real Fatso? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask about the cut. The original Cannarado line is mostly clone-only now; seed versions from other sellers may smell and hit differently.
  • Gas and garlic first. Real Fatso is loud diesel, garlic and ammonia. Sweet candy or fruit-forward flower is something else.
  • Big, dense, greasy buds with heavy trichome coverage — this is a resin strain. Fluffy or leafy flower is a red flag.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 35%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • A proper cure. Prime Cuts says a slow, cold dry brings out the garlic and diesel; hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
  • Name check. "Fatso OG," "Fatso Kush" and "Fatz" are the same strain. Crosses like Fat Banana, Fat Dog or Fatty Cakes are not.

Growing Fatso

Fatso is a moderate-difficulty grow (Prime Cuts) with OG-style stretch and buds heavy enough to snap branches.

  • Flowering: 60–80 days per SeedFinder (citing Phinest Cannabis); Weedmaps says 56–70 days. Prime Cuts notes OG-leaning phenos finish around 63–67 days while GMO-leaning ones can run 10–11 weeks.
  • Yield: about 500 g/m² indoors and 550 g per plant outdoors per SeedFinder; Prime Cuts says 350–500 g/m² indoors.
  • Structure: long internodes, slightly flimsy branches and a 1.5–2x stretch after the flip. Top early, use LST or a SCROG, and trellis or stake before the buds bulk up.
  • Canopy: it vegs fast and gets leafy — SeedFinder recommends defoliation and lollipopping for airflow.
  • Climate: temperate, not hot and humid. Drop humidity late in flower to protect the dense buds from mold.
  • Feeding: Prime Cuts recommends extra calcium and magnesium under strong LEDs.
  • Pests: heavy resin draws mites and thrips; scout often.
  • For hash: Prime Cuts and Phinest flag it as a strong washer. Prime Cuts also lists award placements for Fatso concentrates and pre-rolls, including a first in concentrates at the 2024 Farmers Cup 420 Edition for a Fatso badder.
