Honey Banana Strain: Banana Funk, Honey Resin, Happy Then Heavy
The Honey Banana strain — listed on most databases as Honey Bananas — is an Elemental Seeds hybrid built from Strawberry Banana and Honey Boo Boo. Open the jar and it's ripe banana first, then honey and tree fruit over a sweet, earthy funk. The high starts giggly and euphoric and then settles into a relaxed, heavy body, which is why so many people save it for the back half of the day. For sweet, fruit-forward flower on our shelf, start with our THCA flower collection.
It's also a strain the databases can't agree on. Leafly says its effects are "mostly energizing"; SeedFinder calls it mostly indica, and the breeder's own description promises a deep body stone. One source says myrcene leads the terpenes, another says caryophyllene. Below: what each source actually says, where the honey and the banana come from, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Honey Banana's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid — but which way it leans depends on who you ask. Leafly lists it as a hybrid with "mostly energizing" effects and calls it "heavy-handed"; AllBud says an evenly balanced 50/50; SeedFinder files it as "mostly indica."
- Breeder: Elemental Seeds, credited by Leafly, GrowDiaries, SeedFinder and Weedmaps. SeedFinder lists it as feminized seeds only, for indoor or outdoor growing.
- Parents: Strawberry Banana × Honey Boo Boo. Every database we checked agrees on that cross.
- THC: 21% on Leafly; 18–22% on AllBud and Weedmaps.
- CBD and minors: CBD is negligible; Leafly lists 1% CBG.
- Aliases: Honey Bananas (the most common listing), Honey Banana and Hbn.
Where the grandparents come from
SeedFinder fills in the family tree one level up — and both sides are loaded:
- Strawberry Banana — Reserva Privada's Banana Kush × a strawberry phenotype of Bubble Gum. That's the banana, the candy sweetness and the faint strawberry some reviewers call "strawnana."
- Honey Boo Boo — a DNA Genetics limited edition, Bubba Kush × Captain Krypt OG, from a selected Captain Krypt OG male. SeedFinder rates it 80% indica, and the breeder says its strong terpenes made it a concentrate plant. Hash maker Nasha describes it simply as "a heady kushy indica." This is where the weight comes from.
Put those together and the split makes sense: a candy-fruit parent known for a happy head, and a Bubba-and-OG parent built for body. Which half shows up most depends on the phenotype — and on how much you smoke.
Why it's called Honey Banana
Leafly says the name comes from two things: the banana aroma and a resinous coat "as sticky as honey." It's also hard to miss that the honey half of the name matches the Honey Boo Boo parent. We couldn't find Elemental Seeds explaining the name in its own words, so take both as the likely story, not a confirmed one.
Not to be confused with
The name gets reused. SeedFinder lists a separate Honey Banana S1 from Happy Dreams Genetics — a selfed selection whose specs should be treated on their own — and you'll also see Honey Banana Sundae, Honey Banana Zuava and Zkittlez Honey Banana on menus. Those are newer crosses, not the original. One widely shared strain blog also says Honey Boo Boo is only "occasionally" a parent; no database we found backs that up.
Honey Banana's offspring
SeedFinder counts 38 direct descendants, which tells you how much breeders like it. Notable ones include Bruised Banana (DNA Genetics), Cellar Stash (Compound Genetics), Banana Fumes (Original Sensible Seeds), Banana Shack (Farmhouse Genetics), BananaBread and a Granddaddy Gorilla × Honey Banana cross. Leafly also lists Honey Runtz as a child.
Honey Banana Terpene Profile
Leafly lists myrcene as Honey Banana's dominant terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene; GrowDiaries names myrcene and limonene. Hash maker Nasha's listing flips the order and puts beta-caryophyllene first. Strain guides add linalool and ocimene, but no source publishes lab percentages. Caryophyllene is the one with real research behind it: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, herbal, ripe fruit — the body weight
Limonene — citrus-sweet lift
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, earthy funk
Linalool — floral, soft calm
Estimated relative profile for Honey Banana — order from Leafly (myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene); one hash maker lists caryophyllene first. Linalool comes from strain guides without lab data. No source publishes percentages.
- Myrcene: Leafly's dominant terpene, and GrowDiaries' too. It brings the earthy, ripe-fruit base and is the terpene most often linked with heavier, couch-leaning strains — a good fit for the way Honey Banana settles.
- Limonene: The citrusy-sweet top note GrowDiaries describes, and part of the early happy, giggly lift.
- Caryophyllene: The pepper and funk under the fruit. Nasha's hash listing names beta-caryophyllene as the dominant terpene with high limonene and myrcene — a sign that some cuts run spicier than others.
- Linalool: Credited by some strain guides for a floral, calm edge; treat it as plausible, not proven.
No single terpene is "banana." It's the whole blend — earthy myrcene, citrus-sweet limonene and peppery caryophyllene together — and like most fruit-forward strains it reads loudest fresh and in rosin, and fades in old, dry flower.
Appearance
AllBud describes large, dense, bright neon-green nugs with a spade shape, light amber hairs and a sticky coat of "sweet syrupy resin." That stickiness is the point — Leafly says the strain is named partly for resin that's "as sticky as honey." Strain guides add a silvery frost and compact, conical buds; purple is uncommon, though the Honey Boo Boo parent can fade purple late in flower.
Aroma and Flavor
Crack a jar and it's ripe banana first, then honey and tree fruit, with an earthy, pungent funk underneath. AllBud says the smell is fruity with earthy pungency that turns "intensely sweet" as you break the buds apart. Its flavor tags read fruity, honey, strawberry, sweet, tropical and vanilla, with a sugary candy aftertaste that gets stronger on the exhale. Leafly lists honey, tree fruit and sweet.
Leafly reviewers get specific: "the banana funk smell is out of this world," "tastes a bit like banana bread," and one says it smells like a stick of Juicy Fruit gum. A few pick up mint or menthol. One reviewer didn't love the "strawnana" side — the strawberry from Strawberry Banana shows up more in some cuts than others. GrowDiaries describes the aroma as herbal and citrusy sweet.
Recreational Effects
Honey Banana is a two-act high. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.6 rating from more than 200 reviews, the top-reported effects are:
- Giggly: the headline. Expect the room to get funnier.
- Happy and euphoric: a fast mood lift — AllBud calls it euphoric and uplifting, with mild energy and "artistic motivation."
- Creative and talkative: GrowDiaries and Leafly reviewers report creative, social effects early on.
- Relaxed: the second act. AllBud says it turns hazy and sedating as it builds, with sleepiness and a growing appetite. Elemental's own description promises a deep body stone with a mild mind buzz.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a quick, giggly lift in mood.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — happy, social and creative, with the body starting to loosen.
- 1–3 hours: the settle. At a small dose many people stay functional; at a bigger one the Honey Boo Boo side takes over and it gets heavy, hungry and sleepy.
That's why the sources split on "energizing" versus "indica." Most Leafly reviewers use it in the day and one says it leans "toward a head high," but AllBud recommends it for later in the day. Our advice: try it in the afternoon first, and keep the second bowl for the evening.

How Strong Is Honey Banana?
Honey Banana sits above average without chasing record numbers. The published figures:
- Leafly: 21% THC, "higher THC than average," plus 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 18–22% THC.
- Weedmaps: 18–22% THC.
One long strain guide claims 18–26% with top cuts over 27%, but cites no lab. Realistically, a well-grown cut lands around 18–22%, and Leafly reviewers describe a "well rounded punch" rather than a knockout — one high-tolerance user says a few hits were plenty, another says it's not the hardest-hitting strain they've had. Rosin made from it is a different story: concentrates run several times stronger than flower, so dose them far more carefully.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Honey Banana against the 18–22% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Honey Banana for Hash and Rosin
Both parents point to resin. DNA Genetics bred Honey Boo Boo with concentrates in mind, and Leafly's own description of Honey Banana leads with its sticky coat. In the market, Canadian hash maker Nasha sells a Honey Banana cold-cure live rosin from Humboldt sungrown flower by Emerald Queen Farms and East Mill Creek Farms, and Weedmaps notes the cultivar has a following among hash and rosin makers — though it adds that extraction results vary by selection. We couldn't find a published wash-yield figure for Honey Banana itself, so treat "great for hash" as a reputation, not a number. If the banana-honey flavor is what you're chasing, rosin is where it's cleanest.
Honey Banana vs Similar Strains
- vs Strawberry Banana: the parent. Strawberry Banana is brighter and more candy-fruit; Honey Banana keeps the banana but adds honey, earthy funk and a heavier landing from Honey Boo Boo.
- vs Banana Kush: the grandparent. Banana Kush is banana over kush earth and runs more relaxed from the start; Honey Banana is sweeter and gigglier up front.
- vs Banana OG: similar banana nose, more OG fuel and pine. Pick Banana OG for gas; Honey Banana for honey-sweet.
- vs Honey Bun: a shared word, a different plant. Honey Bun reads like pastry and dough; Honey Banana reads like fresh fruit and honey.
- vs Tropicana Banana: the citrus-banana option. More orange and a clearer, daytime high; Honey Banana is sweeter and heavier.
- vs Strawberry 2.1: our featured in-stock pick, and honestly not a twin. Both are sweet and fruit-forward with a happy, social lift, but Strawberry 2.1 runs ripe strawberry and stays upbeat instead of sinking into a heavy body. Want the solventless route? Our Dayglow Mousse live rosin is the rosin on our shelf.
Who Honey Banana Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: afternoon-into-evening smokers, social sessions where a few laughs are the goal, fruit-and-dessert flavor fans, people winding down after work, and rosin collectors.
Poor fit: anyone who needs to stay sharp for hours, and people prone to THC anxiety — "anxious" is one of Leafly's top-reported negatives. For a sweet-fruit, easygoing flower that stays upbeat, Strawberry 2.1 is the pick on our shelf, from $22.
How to Use Honey Banana THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the banana and honey. Lower temperatures, around 350–380°F, keep the fruit and the giggly lift up front; 390–410°F brings out the earthy funk and the heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs — a ceramic one-hitter is perfect for this — then wait 15–30 minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full happy-then-heavy arc. With rosin, start with a rice-grain-sized dab. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, AllBud and GrowDiaries, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Low mood: the most-cited reason on Leafly — about 32% of reviewers mention depression.
- Stress: about 31% of Leafly reviewers.
- Pain: about 25% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud also lists arthritis, chronic pain and headaches, and GrowDiaries mentions migraines.
- Appetite and nausea: AllBud lists loss of appetite and nausea, consistent with the munchies it describes late in the high.
- Sleep: AllBud and GrowDiaries mention insomnia — at higher doses, as the body effect takes over.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly, with thirst close behind in reviews.
- Anxiety — among Leafly's top-reported negatives, especially at high doses or low tolerance.
- Dizziness — reported by GrowDiaries, mostly when it's overdone.
- Couch-lock and munchies — the second act, if you don't plan for it.
Is Honey Banana good for sleep? At a bigger dose, often — it gets hazy and sedating. At a small one, it's more giggly than sleepy. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Honey Banana Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask for the breeder. An Elemental Seeds cut is the documented one; with S1s and "Honey Banana" crosses around, provenance matters.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Banana you can smell. A real Honey Banana has ripe banana and honey over earthy funk. Flat, hay-ish flower with no fruit is old or mislabeled.
- Sticky resin — it's in the name. Dense, frosty buds that stick to your fingers; dry, skimpy trichomes are a red flag.
- A proper cure — rushed or over-dried flower loses its fruit first, and the banana is the first thing to go.
Growing Honey Banana
Honey Banana rewards a dialed-in grower. GrowDiaries calls it a challenge indoors and out, with careful feeding, soil prep and pest management needed — but a sizable harvest when you get it right.
- Flowering: about 59–60 days per GrowDiaries and SeedFinder; Elemental's published window is 58–63 days.
- Yield: around 475 g/m² per GrowDiaries; SeedFinder's description says high yields.
- Seeds: SeedFinder lists feminized seeds only, for indoor or outdoor growing.
- Training: medium height with solid branching; growers top early and use low-stress training to keep the canopy even.
- Environment: dense, resin-heavy buds need good airflow and humidity control late in flower to avoid mold. A slow dry and cure protects the banana.
