Banana Split Strain

Banana Split Strain: Tangie Meets Banana Sherbet

The Banana Split strain is a cross of Tangie and Banana Sherbet, bred by Crockett Family Farms in California. It smells exactly like the name promises — tangerine and ripe banana over sweet cream — and the high is the opposite of a dessert coma: clear, upbeat and productive, with a calm body underneath. Leafly's description calls it "a clean level-headed high suitable for anyone looking to have a productive day." It belongs in the fruit-forward, daytime corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also easy to mix up. At least two other "Banana Split" strains exist with completely different genetics, the THC numbers run from 15% to the mid-20s depending on the source, and reviewers don't fully agree on whether it's a morning or a night strain. Below: the real lineage, what the potency numbers mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Banana Split's frosty buds.

Banana Split Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Sativa-leaning hybrid. SeedFinder and AllBud both list it 60% sativa / 40% indica, and Leafly calls it "sativa-dominant."
  • Ancestry: Tangie × Banana Sherbet. SeedFinder traces Tangie to California Orange × a Skunk hybrid, and Banana Sherbet to Banana Kush × Sunset Sherbet.
  • Breeder: Crockett Family Farms. Leafly describes it as a cross of "their famous Tangie and Banana Sherbert," and Theory Wellness calls it one of the first strains the breeder released.
  • Second source: SeedFinder also lists a Domus Seeds Banana Split built from the same two parents.
  • THC: Leafly lists 15%; AllBud 22–25%; GrowDiaries 24%. Reviewers report individual batches in the mid-20s.
  • CBD: Negligible. Leafly lists 0%; AllBud and GrowDiaries list about 1%.
  • Offspring: Leafly lists BNI Banana Fig as a child strain.

The family tree, one step back

Each parent brings something specific. Tangie is the citrus — SeedFinder traces it to California Orange — and the reason Banana Split's nose opens with mandarin and orange peel. Banana Sherbet brings the dessert: Leafly lists it as Banana Kush × Sunset Sherbet, bred by Crockett, limonene-led and sweet. Go one step further and you reach Ghost OG (behind Banana Kush) and Girl Scout Cookies × Pink Panties (behind Sunset Sherbet). That cookie-and-sherbet side is why Banana Split reads creamy rather than just fruity.

One honest caveat: SeedFinder marks Banana Sherbet's parentage as "probably" Banana Kush × Sunset Sherbet. Leafly states it flatly. Nobody disputes Tangie as the other parent.

Not to be confused with…

  • Banana Split OG: a 3C Farms (Los Angeles) indica-dominant strain from its Kraken line crossed with Banana OG, debuted in 2017, per PAPER. Different genetics, heavier effect.
  • Banana Split Kush: AllBud lists it as OG Kush × Banana, roughly 70% indica — again, a separate plant.
  • Banana Splitz: usually the same Tangie × Banana Sherbet cross sold under a branded name.

Banana Split Terpene Profile

Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and linalool. The nose suggests plenty of limonene too — it's the lead terpene in the Banana Sherbet parent per Leafly, and Tangie is famous for it. Caryophyllene is worth knowing on its own: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — ripe fruit, earthy, relaxed body

Limonene — tangerine, citrus lift

Caryophyllene — pepper, a spicy edge

Linalool — floral, calming

Typical relative profile for Banana Split — myrcene-led per Leafly, with limonene inherited from both Tangie and Banana Sherbet. Tangie-leaning cuts read more citrus; banana-leaning cuts more creamy.

  • Myrcene: Ripe, musky fruit and the calm body under the heady lift.
  • Limonene: The tangerine and orange-peel brightness from the Tangie side, and a driver of the upbeat mood.
  • Caryophyllene: A peppery, spicy edge on the exhale; the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Linalool: Floral and soft — part of why the high stays level-headed rather than racy.

The banana isn't one terpene. It comes from the Banana Kush side's overall chemistry, and reviewers notice it most when a bud is broken open.

Appearance

Banana Split buds are compact and dense. Westword's reviewer described "mitten-shaped" nugs with segmented calyxes like small mossy pebbles, deep forest green and violet, under a dense coat of very small trichomes. AllBud describes oversized, grape-shaped olive-green nugs with bright yellow-orange hairs, and Leafly notes "large buds with oversized frosty colas." Cooler finishing temperatures pull out the purple — one Colorado home grower described "big ol' purple buds."

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and the Tangie side hits first: mandarin, tangerine and lemon peel. Behind it comes ripe banana and a sweet, creamy note — the "split" part. Westword picked up honeydew melon and faint diesel and pine, and summed it up as "much more sherbet than ice cream (rainbow sherbet, at that)." Leafly users tag it tropical, citrus and honey; AllBud adds sour, creamy and a cherry-lemon nose. The smoke tastes like a fruit smoothie — orange, lime and melon — with pine, a little pepper, and a faint rubbery note on the finish.

Recreational Effects

Leafly calls the effects "mostly energizing," and Theory Wellness puts it well: "energizing but not racy." On Leafly, with more than a hundred reviews, the most-reported effects are:

  • Focused: the headline effect — a clear, productive head.
  • Happy: an easy mood lift without the jittery edge some citrus sativas carry.
  • Euphoric: stronger in the first hour, especially on Tangie-leaning cuts.
  • Relaxed: AllBud and GrowDiaries reviewers report a calm body that doesn't sedate at normal doses.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a bright, citrusy head change — alert, talkative, a little giggly.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — focused and upbeat, with a light body calm.
  • 1–3 hours: a gentle settle. AllBud reviewers describe it as long-lasting and mellow; one noted sleepy thoughts creeping in as it faded.

Morning or night? Reviewers disagree

Most Leafly reviewers call it a day strain — "perfect for any time of day," as one put it, and some use it in the morning. Westword's reviewer had the opposite experience: an active head that eased anxiety and sparked curiosity, but low physical energy for hours, and a suggestion to save it for night. The likely explanation is phenotype and dose. Tangie-leaning cuts run brighter; banana-and-sherbet-leaning cuts run heavier. Try a small amount on a free afternoon before you plan a day around it.

How Strong Is Banana Split?

Banana Split is moderate to strong, not a record-chaser. The published numbers vary:

  • Leafly: 15% THC, though the same page calls its potency "higher THC than average."
  • AllBud: 22–25% on average, with one reviewer's sample at 23.8%.
  • GrowDiaries: 24% THC.

Reviewers mostly describe a manageable, functional high — one Leafly reviewer called it a "mid strain" — so the experience usually feels lighter than the mid-20s number suggests. That said, Leafly's top negatives include anxious and headache, so a big dose of a Tangie-heavy cut can still tip over.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Banana Split batch against the 15–25% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Awards

SeedFinder's Emerald Cup 2016 results list "Banana Split #7" in 8th place in the Outdoor category — entered by Cut Creek Farms, not Crockett. SeedFinder's strain page attributes that placing to the Crockett line. We found no other competition record for it.

Banana Split vs Similar Strains

  • vs Tangie: the citrus parent — sharper, more orange, more energetic. Banana Split rounds it off with banana and cream.
  • vs Banana Kush: the banana grandparent. Banana Kush is heavier and more relaxing; Banana Split is brighter and more daytime.
  • vs Sour Tangie: another Tangie cross, but gassier and racier, with Sour Diesel in the mix.
  • vs Banana Punch and Banana OG: banana-forward, but both lean indica and relaxing. Pick Banana Split for the day, those for the evening.
  • vs Strawnana: strawberry and banana instead of tangerine and banana, with a similar happy, relaxed lift.
  • vs Strawberry 2.1: honestly, not a flavor match — it's ripe strawberry with a faint kick of gas, not banana and tangerine. But it's a sativa-leaning fruit hybrid with the same upbeat, social high, and its Strawberry Guava parent descends from StrawNana. It's our closest in-stock match. For the Tangie-style citrus, Dayglow Mousse is the better pick on our shelf.

Who Banana Split Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: daytime smokers who want fruit flavor without a couch-lock; creative and social sessions; fans of Tangie and sherbet-style dessert strains who don't want them too heavy.

Poor fit: anyone looking for a heavy sleep strain, or people very sensitive to citrus-sativa anxiety. For a heavier banana profile, look at Banana Kush or Banana Punch.

How to Use Banana Split THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the tangerine and banana. Around 350–375°F keeps the citrus and cream bright; 390–400°F brings out more body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full upbeat arc without tipping into anxiety. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 24%).
  • Pain: about 17% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud reviewers mention back and neck tension.
  • Anxiety: about 17% report help — but "anxious" is also one of its top negatives, so dose matters.
  • Low mood and fatigue: AllBud lists depression and fatigue among reported uses, consistent with its upbeat, energizing effect.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry eyes and dry mouth — the most common complaints on Leafly and GrowDiaries.
  • Anxiety or paranoia — among Leafly's top negatives, most often at high doses.
  • Headache or dizziness — occasionally reported, usually from overdoing it.

Is Banana Split good for sleep? Not usually at normal doses — it's more uplifting than sedating, though some cuts and bigger doses leave you low-energy as it fades. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Banana Split Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Both halves of the nose. Real Banana Split has tangerine and banana-cream. Pure orange with no dessert suggests a Tangie-only cut; earthy banana with no citrus may be a different "Banana Split" entirely.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Dense, frosty buds with trichomes inside the bud, not just on top; violet streaks are a plus, not a requirement.
  • Ask about the lineage. If the seller says Banana OG or OG Kush × Banana, it's Banana Split OG or Banana Split Kush — not this strain.
  • A proper cure — slightly sticky, sweet-smelling, never hay or grass.

Growing Banana Split

Banana Split is a medium-sized, medium-stretch plant that rewards training. It grows well indoors and outdoors.

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks (around 60 days) per SeedFinder's Crockett listing; the Domus Seeds version is listed at 9–10 weeks. A Westword grower found it ran about a week longer than expected.
  • Yield: 450–500 g/m² indoors per SeedFinder, with large, frosty colas.
  • Phenotypes: SeedFinder notes a fast-blooming #1 and a slower #3.
  • Training: top early and use LST or a screen — the Tangie side keeps growing into flower.
  • Color: cooler nights late in flower bring out violet and purple.
  • Seeds: the Crockett line was never sold as feminized seed, per SeedFinder; a Domus Seeds version of the same cross exists, and clones circulate in legal markets.

Banana Split was a Colorado dispensary staple — Westword spotted it at Buddy Boy, Diego Pellicer, EverBloom, Fox Cannabis, Northern Lights Cannabis Co., Standing Akimbo and Wolf Pac Cannabis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Banana Split indica or sativa?

Banana Split is a sativa-leaning hybrid. SeedFinder and AllBud list it 60% sativa / 40% indica, and Leafly calls it sativa-dominant. Most people use it during the day.

What is Banana Split a cross of?

Tangie × Banana Sherbet. Banana Sherbet is listed as Banana Kush × Sunset Sherbet, so Banana Split carries citrus from Tangie and banana-cream dessert from the Banana Kush and sherbet side.

Who bred Banana Split?

Crockett Family Farms in California — Leafly credits them with Tangie too. Domus Seeds also lists a Banana Split built from the same two parents.

How strong is Banana Split?

Moderate to strong. Leafly lists 15% THC, AllBud 22–25% and GrowDiaries 24%. Most reviewers describe a manageable, functional high, but start small.

What does Banana Split taste like?

Tangerine, mandarin and lemon peel up front, then ripe banana and sweet cream, with tropical, honey and melon notes and a light pine-pepper finish.

What are the effects of Banana Split?

Focused, happy and euphoric, with a calm body. Leafly calls it mostly energizing; Theory Wellness describes it as energizing but not racy.

Is Banana Split good for anxiety?

It's mixed. About 17% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' is also one of its top-reported negatives. Low doses are the safer approach.

Is Banana Split good for sleep?

Not usually. It's uplifting at normal doses, though some cuts leave you low-energy as the high fades. For sleep, a heavier banana strain like Banana Kush fits better.

Is Banana Split good for beginners?

It's one of the friendlier citrus hybrids — level-headed rather than racy. Start with one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.

Is Banana Split the same as Banana Split OG or Banana Split Kush?

No. Banana Split OG is a 3C Farms indica-dominant cross with Banana OG, and Banana Split Kush is listed as OG Kush × Banana. Banana Splitz is usually the same Tangie × Banana Sherbet cross.

How long does Banana Split take to flower?

About 8–9 weeks (around 60 days) for the Crockett line per SeedFinder; the Domus Seeds version is listed at 9–10 weeks. Top or train it early.
