Point Break Strain

Point Break Strain: The Citrus Wave That Lifts You, Then Pulls You Under

The Point Break strain earns its name — a clean head-high set, then an undertow of body relaxation that drags you to the sand. Surfr Seeds built it from a hand-picked Tropicana Cookies cut crossed to a male called Trophy Wife, and the result is a loud orange-grapefruit cultivar most databases file as indica-leaning even though the first twenty minutes feel anything but. Shopping THCA flower? We'll point you at the closest thing on our shelf.

Fair warning: two different plants carry this name, and one parent's identity is contested. We'll lay that out rather than paper over it.

Quick Facts

In short: Point Break is a Surfr Seeds hybrid — Tropicana Cookies crossed to a Trophy Wife male — that smells like sour orange peel and black pepper, tests in the low-to-mid 20s for THC, and opens energetic before settling into a heavy, hungry body calm.

Type Hybrid. Leafly files it as indica; AllBud calls it 60% indica / 40% sativa; SeedFinder lists it simply as "indica/sativa"
Lineage Tropicana Cookies (Mtn Cut) × Trophy Wife — per Leafly, AllBud, SeedFinder and Good Chemistry
Breeder Surfr Seeds. A separate, unrelated Point Break is associated with Karma Genetics
THC 23% with 1% CBG per Leafly; 22–25% per AllBud, SeedFinder and I Love Growing Marijuana; one published 2021 COA came in at 21.49% total THC
Dominant terpene Leafly says caryophyllene; the one full COA we found put limonene narrowly first with caryophyllene right behind
Flavor Sour orange and grapefruit, sweet-and-sour vanilla on the inhale, black pepper, lavender and wood on the exhale
Best for Late afternoon, creative work that doesn't need to last, appetite, winding down after
Watch out for Dry mouth, headache, anxiety at high doses, and the energy crash Westword's reviewer clocked at about the two-hour mark

Point Break Strain Genetics & Lineage

The paperwork is clean on one side of this family and a mess on the other.

  • Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. Leafly files it as indica while its own copy says "hybrid from Surfr Seeds"; AllBud says 60% indica / 40% sativa.
  • Parents: Tropicana Cookies × Trophy Wife. Leafly specifies the "Mtn Cut"; Good Chemistry, the Colorado grower that ran it, lists the same.
  • Breeder: Surfr Seeds — SeedFinder notes Karma Genetics sells a separate version under the same name.
  • THC: 23% per Leafly; 22–25% per AllBud, SeedFinder and I Love Growing Marijuana.
  • Minor cannabinoids: 1% CBG (Leafly); CBD 0.59–0.98% (I Love Growing Marijuana).
  • Offspring: Breaking Point and Riptide, per Leafly.
  • Awards: A High Times Strain of the Day slot during 4/20 week 2023. No cup wins documented.

Tropicana Cookies: where the orange comes from

Tropicana Cookies is Tangie × GSC — Tangie brings the sour orange-peel volatility, GSC the density and resin. Surfr used the Mtn Cut, a selected clone, and cut-specific crosses run more consistent batch to batch. Our Tropicana Cookies entry has more.

Trophy Wife: the parent nobody agrees on

SeedFinder says Trophy Wife's origins are uncertain and that "most sources point to The Wife × Cherry Wine" — a high-CBD hemp line. Westword describes it the same way, "a floral, spicy CBD strain."

Beard Bros Pharms flatly disagrees: the male Surfr used was a selected Triangle Mints F2 — Triangle Kush × Animal Mints — and the CBD Trophy Wife is a different plant sharing a name. We can't resolve it. The minty, peppery backbone fits Triangle Mints; the trace CBD fits the other.

The Karma Genetics plant is different entirely — roughly 90% indica from a SFV OG Kush backcross and Skunk #1, per I Love Growing Marijuana, sweet and tropical-floral over skunk. Smells skunky instead of citrusy? That's why.

Point Break Terpene Profile

Leafly names caryophyllene dominant, with limonene and linalool behind it. The one complete lab panel we found — Illinois News Joint, January 2021 — puts limonene a nose ahead. Either way the top four are the same: citrus oil over black pepper, floral edge, earthy base.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Limonene — the sour orange and grapefruit lead

Caryophyllene — black pepper and spice; Leafly ranks this one first

Myrcene — the earthy weight behind the back-half body calm

Linalool — floral lavender; the note reviewers keep tasting on the exhale

Bars reflect a single published COA (Illinois News Joint, tested 01/08/2021) where limonene made up 21.22% of total terpene content, trans-caryophyllene 19.29%, β-myrcene 11.55% and linalool 10.31%. Terpene ratios shift by phenotype, grow and cure — treat this as the shape of the profile, not a guarantee for your jar.

  • Limonene — 21.22%. Doing the heavy lifting on the nose, and the terpene usually tied to the bright front end.
  • Caryophyllene — 19.29%. Peppery and warm; why Westword picked out black pepper.
  • Myrcene — 11.55%. Earthy and herbal; myrcene-forward flower feels heavier the longer you sit with it.
  • Linalool — 10.31%. Lavender and florals. With humulene at 6.22% and terpinolene at 3.08%, it lends complexity most citrus strains lack.

Appearance

Descriptions split predictably: database writers describe fat heart-shaped nugs, people who held the flower describe something leaner.

AllBud goes with "oversized, heart-shaped nugs" in dark olive green with purple undertones and frosty trichomes. Westword, reviewing Colorado flower in person, saw buds "tall and thin, but relatively dense," olive green with purple spotting; SeedFinder agrees — long, thin, frosty. Illinois News Joint described a tricolored bud resinous enough to leave kief in the container. The thread is resin and purple, not size.

Aroma and Flavor

Nobody argues about this part: Point Break smells like sour citrus, not sweet lemonade.

Westword calls it "strong sour orange and grapefruit, with occasional floral and peppery notes." AllBud has it "very sour and citrusy with punches of sharp tangerine" over woody pine and earth. Beard Bros adds orange peel and creamy sweetness; Illinois News Joint got pungent orange with woody spice, cool mint and sage.

The flavor follows and gets more interesting — AllBud describes a "sweet and sour vanilla citrusy flavor" with wood on the exhale, Westword tastes citrus then black pepper, lavender and wood. Loud flower, too: Beard Bros and I Love Growing Marijuana both say growers need carbon filtration.

Recreational Effects

Point Break is a two-act strain and the gap between acts is wide — bright and electric up front, heavy and couch-ready on the back end.

Leafly's reports land on relaxed, tingly and happy, and its copy calls the effects "mostly calming." AllBud is broader — creative, euphoric, relaxing, sleepy, uplifting — same arc. Westword found it "uplifting and motivating" with strong munchies.

  • Relaxed, tingly, happy — Leafly's three most-reported effects
  • Creative and uplifted early — per AllBud and Westword
  • Euphoric — Illinois News Joint called the cerebral piece "intense"
  • Strong appetite — flagged by Westword and Illinois News Joint
  • Heavy and sleepy late — the landing point in every source

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

Nobody publishes a stopwatch on this, so the timeline below comes from reviewers. A shape, not a schedule.

  • 0–5 minutes: I Love Growing Marijuana describes a head high that "comes on quickly."
  • 5–30 minutes: The bright window — uplift, chattiness, creative itch.
  • 30–90 minutes: Body weight builds, appetite shows up, focus drifts.
  • Around 2 hours: Westword notes the heady high "usually drains energy within about two hours."
  • Beyond 2 hours: Settled body buzz lasting hours, with sedation on higher doses.

How Strong Is Point Break?

Strong, not a record-setter — and the published numbers sit in an unusually tight band.

Leafly lists 23% THC plus 1% CBG. AllBud gives 22–25% and calls it average. SeedFinder says it "regularly produces between 22–25% THC" with some batches higher, and I Love Growing Marijuana repeats that band — though Sativa University is upfront that the figure comes from databases, not a lab test. The one actual COA we found, from Illinois News Joint on 01/08/2021, came in at 21.49% total THC. Crowd-sourced averages skew high.

Those figures come from dispensary cannabis, where the headline number is delta-9 THC. On a THCA flower COA the headline is THCA, the raw acid form, and delta-9 must stay under 0.3% by dry weight. THCA converts to delta-9 when heated, so compliant hemp testing 24% THCA isn't weak — same molecule, different route. Our guide to how to read a THCA COA walks the math, what counts as a good THCA percentage sets expectations, and THCA vs THC covers the chemistry.

Point Break vs Similar Strains

  • vs Tropicana Cookies: Its own mother — purer citrus, more energetic, lighter finish.
  • vs Super Boof: Sibling by parent. Berry-and-citrus where Point Break is sour orange and pepper. The one we stock.
  • vs Tropicana Cherry: Same citrus line, sweeter and redder, without the peppery edge.
  • vs Tangie: The grandparent — sativa-forward and stays up, where Point Break comes down hard.
  • vs Mimosa: Brighter and cleaner; Point Break is louder, with more resin.
  • vs Clementine: Closest on smell, but nearly all citrus — Point Break adds mint, pepper and florals.

Who Point Break Is (and Isn't) For

It suits you if you want a strain with an arc — something that gets you moving for an hour and then lets you stop. A long evening, a day where dinner is the main event.

Poor fit if you need sustained focus: every source describing the back half describes energy leaving, and Illinois News Joint says it can hinder thought processes. Not a beginner strain either — I Love Growing Marijuana flags the THC as high enough to warrant caution for new consumers.

How to Use Point Break THCA Flower — and How Much

Raw THCA flower isn't psychoactive until you heat it. Decarboxylation — THCA dropping a carboxyl group to become delta-9 THC — is what a lighter or a dry herb vape does, and it's why THCA flower gets you high despite testing under 0.3% delta-9.

Methods, roughly by control:

  • Dry herb vape, 350–390°F: Best way to taste this profile — limonene and linalool survive.
  • Joint or pre-roll: Easiest to dose by feel. Our King Size THCA Pre Roll is $9 and clears the $75 free-shipping line.
  • Glass or bong: Fast and efficient, harder to microdose.
  • Concentrates: Point Break sold more as extract than flower — THCA live rosin and THCA diamonds are our equivalents.

How much. At 21–25% total THC, one or two small pulls is a real serving. New or coming back from a break? One pull, put it down, wait fifteen minutes — the bright front end reads as "nothing happened yet" right before the body half lands.

Medicinal Benefits

Everything here is consumer-reported, not clinical. Leafly's reader data is the most structured: of people logging Point Break for relief, 33% cited anxiety, 18% pain, 17% stress. AllBud's "may relieve" list runs longer — anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, fatigue, headaches, migraines, stress — and I Love Growing Marijuana notes the terpene mix may have calming properties. The strong appetite effect is worth naming too.

None of that is medical advice, and nothing here is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Talk to a doctor who knows your history first.

Side Effects and Cautions

Leafly's reported negatives are headache, dry mouth and anxiety. I Love Growing Marijuana adds dry eyes, hunger and thirst, and notes headaches and anxiety show up mainly in people with low THC tolerance. Sativa University flags drowsiness and couch-lock at higher doses — one AllBud reviewer described exactly that.

Water and eye drops handle the dry mouth and eyes. Anxiety and headache are dose-driven, so the fix is taking less. The drowsiness isn't a defect — it's the back half doing its job. Don't plan to drive.

Is Point Break Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

At its best, yes — Good Chemistry's was the only Colorado flower Westword could find, resinous enough to leave kief in the jar. But the label guarantees nothing, so judge the bag.

  • Smell it first. No sour orange and you may not have Surfr's plant.
  • Look for purple. Every source mentions it. Flat olive green is a flag.
  • Check the resin. Frosty to the point of sticky; dull trichomes mean shelf time.
  • Watch the trim. Hand-trimmed keeps its trichome heads.
  • Read the COA. Here, terpene totals beat the THC headline.

Growing Point Break

Grow data is thin and partly contradictory, so here's what's published.

SeedFinder lists roughly 65 days of flowering in its basic info, then says plainly that the breeder shares no growth information and the real time is unknown — and lists the seeds as feminized only. Beard Bros Pharms says the original Surfr release was regular photoperiod seed and estimates nine weeks indoors. We can't settle that.

SeedFinder describes a hardy, bushy plant for indoor, outdoor or greenhouse; Beard Bros calls it vigorous with strong branching. The height and yield figures on grow sites — 60–80 inches, 8–24 oz indoors — come from write-ups of the Karma plant, so don't plan a tent around them.

Is Point Break THCA Flower Legal?

THCA hemp flower sits in the lane the 2018 Farm Bill opened. That law removed hemp — cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight — from the Controlled Substances Act, and the USDA administers the rules that followed. Because THCA is a different molecule from delta-9, raw flower can test high in THCA while staying under the limit.

States are their own story — several restrict high-THCA hemp specifically, and those rules change faster than any article can track. Diesel Hemp also does not ship to Colorado residents.

And the important one: THCA flower will fail a drug test. Urine screens look for THC metabolites, and your body doesn't care where the THC came from. Our rundown on whether THCA shows up on a drug test covers it.
