Purple Runtz Strain: The Grape-Candy Side of the Runtz Family
The Purple Runtz strain is a purple, grape-forward member of the Runtz family. Leafly and AllBud list it as Zkittlez × Gelato #33 — the same pairing behind Runtz itself — which makes it, in practice, a purple-leaning selection of that cross. It smells like lavender, grape candy and sweet citrus, it grows frosty buds with violet undertones, and Leafly's reviewers describe the high as "mostly calming": tingly and relaxed rather than racy. It fits the candy-fruit corner of our THCA flower collection.
The catch is that "Purple Runtz" isn't one plant. Greenpoint Seeds sells a Purple Runtz bred from Runtz × Purple Punch, and LIT Farms sells another from Purple Kush × Black Runtz — and the potency numbers swing from 14% to 30% depending on the source. Below: what each version actually is, how Purple Runtz differs from Runtz, White Runtz and Pink Runtz, the terpenes, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Purple Runtz's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid. AllBud lists an even 50/50 split; Weedmaps lists it as indica and calls the Greenpoint version "indica-leaning"; Greenpoint's own listing on SeedFinder says "mostly indica." The reported effects — tingly, relaxed, calming — read indica-leaning in practice.
- Ancestry (most common): Zkittlez × Gelato #33, per Leafly and AllBud. Leafly names the parents specifically as Zkittlez "The Original Z" and Gelato #33.
- Breeder: Unknown for that cut — Leafly lists the breeder as unknown and Weedmaps says the selector is unconfirmed. Greenpoint Seeds and LIT Farms each sell a separately bred version.
- THC: Leafly 14%; AllBud 18%; Weedmaps 21–30%, with published batches around 22%; GrowDiaries lists LIT Farms' cut at 27%, most batches 24–30%.
- CBD: Negligible — GrowDiaries lists 0.1% for the LIT Farms version.
- Aliases: Purple Runts and PRz, per Leafly. Not to be confused with Purple Runtz Cake, a separate cultivar with its own Leafly page.
Three Purple Runtz versions — and which one you're probably buying
Weedmaps puts it well: Purple Runtz "didn't stay put in the family tree." There are three documented versions, and they're genuinely different plants:
- Zkittlez × Gelato #33 (the common cut): the lineage Leafly, AllBud and Weedmaps' primary listing give, with no confirmed breeder. Because Runtz is itself Zkittlez × Gelato, this version is best understood as what Weedmaps calls "a purple expression of the Runtz family" — a Runtz phenotype selected for color and grape flavor, not a new cross.
- Runtz × Purple Punch (Greenpoint Seeds): a true cross, sold as feminized photoperiod seed. Purple Punch (Larry OG × Granddaddy Purple, bred by Supernova Gardens) adds grape, berry and a heavier, more sedating body.
- Purple Kush × Black Runtz (LIT Farms): listed on GrowDiaries as an indica with grape, sweet and vanilla flavors, plus kushy earth and a hint of fuel.
Dispensary and hemp-shop jars labeled Purple Runtz are most often the Zkittlez × Gelato type, but nothing on a label tells you which version it is. Ask the seller, and read the COA.
How Purple Runtz differs from Runtz, White Runtz and Pink Runtz
All four share the Zkittlez × Gelato backbone, so the differences are selection and, for some cuts, a third parent:
- Runtz: the original, popularized by the Runtz crew in Los Angeles and Leafly's 2020 Strain of the Year. Candy and cream, caryophyllene-led per Leafly, and more talkative and giggly. Purple Runtz trades some of that cream for grape and lavender and reads calmer.
- White Runtz: a Runtz selection prized for an almost white coat of trichomes. Same family sweetness, less grape, no purple.
- Pink Runtz: a pink-hued, fruitier Runtz selection. Closer to Purple Runtz in color and fruit, but brighter and less grape-heavy.
- Black Runtz: the darkest of the family and a parent of LIT Farms' Purple Runtz.
The purple itself isn't a separate gene for potency. It comes from anthocyanin pigments, which some genetics express more strongly — especially when night temperatures drop late in flower. Weedmaps is blunt about it: purple color depends on genetics and conditions, and it doesn't indicate potency.
Purple Runtz Terpene Profile
Leafly lists limonene as Purple Runtz's dominant terpene. For LIT Farms' cut, GrowDiaries lists caryophyllene as dominant and names limonene, myrcene and linalool as the typical supporting terpenes. Linalool fits the lavender note Leafly's reviewers keep reporting. Caryophyllene is worth a note too: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Limonene — sweet citrus, grape-candy lift
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, body calm
Myrcene — earthy, relaxed finish
Linalool — lavender, wind-down
Typical relative profile for Purple Runtz — limonene-led per Leafly. LIT Farms and Purple Punch-cross cuts often read more caryophyllene- and myrcene-forward.
- Limonene: The bright, sweet top note — citrus and candy over the grape — and part of the mood lift reviewers describe.
- Caryophyllene: Pepper and spice under the fruit, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it gives Purple Runtz the relaxed, heavier floor that sets it apart from the chattier original Runtz.
- Linalool: Floral and lavender-like — the note Leafly lists first among the flavors — and associated with a calmer finish.
The grape isn't one terpene. It's the overall chemistry the Zkittlez side passes down (Zkittlez traces to Grape Ape), boosted in the Purple Punch and Purple Kush versions.
Appearance
AllBud describes dense, grape-shaped nugs in bright neon green with thick orange hairs, purple undertones and a frosty coat of purple-tinted white trichomes. GrowDiaries describes LIT Farms' cut as dense and resin-rich with violet hues. How purple a batch gets depends on the cut and how cool the grow ran late in flower — some jars are deep violet, others mostly green with purple flecks. What every source agrees on is the frost: it's a Runtz, and it looks sugared.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and you get grape candy and lavender first, then sweet-and-sour citrus and a tropical edge. Break a bud and an earthy base comes through. Leafly's users list lavender, grape and earthy, with tropical undertones in the description; AllBud lists candy, citrus, fruity, sour, sweet and tropical. Weedmaps' reported flavors split between earthy, grape and berry. LIT Farms' version adds vanilla, kushy earth and a touch of fuel. The inhale is sweet grape candy; the exhale is citrus, lavender and a little earth.
Recreational Effects
Purple Runtz is a relaxing Runtz. Leafly's description says its effects "are mostly calming," and its reviewers — 103 ratings averaging 4.6 stars — most often report:
- Aroused: Leafly's top-reported effect, and AllBud lists it too.
- Tingly: a body buzz that shows up early and stays.
- Relaxed: the core of the high — calm, unhurried and easy.
- Euphoric and happy: AllBud describes an uplifting, mentally stimulating start before the body takes over.
- Dreamy: Weedmaps describes a dreamy headspace with physical relaxation; some reviewers mention the munchies.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5 minutes: a quick, light mood lift and a tingle in the head and body.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — relaxed, happy and a little dreamy, while staying mentally clear at moderate doses. Good for music, a meal or a movie.
- 1–3 hours: a slow settle into body calm. Greenpoint describes its version as calming "without being overly sedating," but bigger doses — especially of Purple Punch-cross cuts — can turn sleepy.
It's not a focus strain. It's better after the to-do list is done.

How Strong Is Purple Runtz?
Purple Runtz has one of the widest potency spreads in the Runtz family, mostly because three different plants share the name:
- Leafly: 14% THC.
- AllBud: 18%.
- Weedmaps: 21–30%, with published batches around 22%.
- GrowDiaries (LIT Farms cut): 27% listed; most batches 24–30%.
The low database numbers are averages of older user reports; modern, well-grown Runtz-family flower usually lands in the low-to-mid 20s, and the LIT Farms and Purple Punch versions are bred to hit harder. Leafly says Purple Runtz suits both new and experienced consumers, which fits the common cut at a modest dose — but don't assume a 30% jar will feel like a 14% one. Call it moderate to strong, depending on the cut.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Purple Runtz against the 14–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Purple Runtz vs Similar Strains
- vs Runtz: the same Zkittlez × Gelato backbone. Runtz is candy and cream, giggly and talkative; Purple Runtz is grapier, more lavender, and calmer.
- vs Zkittlez: the fruit-candy parent and the source of the grape. Purple Runtz adds Gelato's dessert sweetness and frost.
- vs Purple Punch: the grape-and-blueberry dessert parent of Greenpoint's version. Purple Punch is heavier and more sedating; Purple Runtz is sweeter and lighter on its feet.
- vs Rainbow Runtz, Blue Runtz and Candy Runtz: other Runtz spin-offs. Blue Runtz leans berry, Candy Runtz leans pure sugar; Purple Runtz is the grape-and-lavender one.
- vs Granddaddy Purple: the classic purple grape indica. GDP is earthier and much more sedating; Purple Runtz keeps the Runtz candy and a clearer head.
- vs Cosmic Runtz: a Runtz selection from the same Zkittlez × Gelato lineage, with the same candy-sweet, euphoric-to-relaxed arc — minus the grape emphasis. It's the closest match on our shelf.
Who Purple Runtz Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: fans of grape and candy flavors; afternoon or evening sessions; anyone who wants Runtz sweetness with a calmer, more relaxed high than the original.
Poor fit: anyone who needs focus or energy, or very low-tolerance users handed a high-testing jar. For a heavier purple-fruit dessert profile, Blueberry Pancakes (from $24) is the indica-dominant option on our shelf.
How to Use Purple Runtz THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the grape and lavender. Around 350–380°F keeps the candy and floral notes; 390–410°F brings out the spice and a heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — potency varies a lot between cuts. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 19%).
- Stress: about 15% of Leafly reviewers, consistent with its calming reputation.
- Low mood: about 10% report help with depression.
- Aches and cramps: AllBud lists chronic pain, cramps and muscle spasms; Leafly says patients often reach for it for mild pain and stress.

If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — two of Leafly's three top negatives.
- Dizziness — Leafly's other listed negative, usually from overdoing it.
- Couch-lock and munchies — more likely at high doses or with Purple Punch-cross cuts.
Is Purple Runtz good for sleep? At higher doses in the evening, it can be — but the common cut is more relaxing than knockout. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Purple Runtz Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Purple Runtz it is. Zkittlez × Gelato #33, Greenpoint's Runtz × Purple Punch and LIT Farms' Purple Kush × Black Runtz are different plants. A good seller knows.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Grape and candy you can actually smell. Purple color alone proves nothing — it's a pigment, not a potency marker. Purple buds with a flat, hay-like nose are a bad trade.
- Heavy frost, with trichomes inside the bud, not just on the surface.
- A proper cure — rushed flower loses the candy and lavender notes first.
Growing Purple Runtz
Greenpoint describes its Purple Runtz as relatively easy to grow and resistant to most stressors, with heavy colas that may need staking. GrowDiaries describes LIT Farms' cut as medium-height with strong lateral branching and high yields.
- Flowering: about 63 days (8–9 weeks) for Greenpoint's version; 56–63 days indoors for LIT Farms' cut and the Runtz-phenotype version per Weedmaps.
- Yield: medium for Greenpoint's cut; high for LIT Farms' per GrowDiaries.
- Color: cooler night temperatures in the last weeks of flower bring out the purple in cuts that carry it.
- Airflow: dense colas invite mold — space plants and keep air moving, as Weedmaps notes.
- Outdoors: harvest around early October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Seeds: Greenpoint Seeds sells feminized photoperiod seed; LIT Farms sells its own line. Purple Runtz Cake Auto is a different cultivar.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Purple Runtz indica or sativa?
Purple Runtz is a hybrid. AllBud lists it 50/50, while Weedmaps and Greenpoint Seeds call it indica-leaning. Its most-reported effects — tingly, relaxed, calming — read indica-leaning, and most people use it in the afternoon or evening.
What is Purple Runtz a cross of?

Leafly lists the breeder of the common Zkittlez × Gelato #33 cut as unknown. Greenpoint Seeds and LIT Farms each sell their own separately bred Purple Runtz.
Is Purple Runtz the same as Runtz?

How strong is Purple Runtz?
Leafly lists 14% THC and AllBud 18%, while Weedmaps gives 21–30% and LIT Farms' cut tests 24–30%. Modern batches usually land in the low-to-mid 20s.

Why is Purple Runtz purple?
Anthocyanin pigments, which some genetics express more strongly, especially with cooler night temperatures late in flower. The color doesn't indicate potency.
Is Purple Runtz good for sleep?
It can help at higher evening doses, especially Purple Punch-cross cuts, but the common cut is more relaxing than sedating.
Is Purple Runtz good for anxiety?
About 19% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, and 15% with stress. Low doses are the safer approach, since potency varies between cuts.
Is Purple Runtz good for beginners?
Leafly says it suits new and experienced consumers, and the common cut is manageable at a small dose. Start with one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.
How long does Purple Runtz take to flower?
About 8–9 weeks indoors — roughly 56–63 days — with outdoor harvests around early October.
