Warheads Strain: Sour Candy in Flower Form
The Warheads strain — also sold as Warhead, Warheadz and War Headz — takes its name from the famously sour candy, and it earns it. The most widely cited version is a sativa-leaning cross of Kaboom and Sour Pez from Nerds Genetics: a sharp hit of sour lemon and citrus up front, a sweet finish, and a fast, energizing, focused high. It sits in the bright, citrus-forward corner of our THCA flower collection.
The name is a nod to the flavor only — the strain has nothing to do with the candy maker. And there isn't just one Warheads. Different growers sell different crosses under the same name, from a Sour Diesel line to a melon-sweet Watermelon OG cross. Below: which Warheads is which, how strong it really is, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Warheads' frosty buds.

- Type: Sativa-leaning hybrid. AllBud lists 65% sativa / 35% indica; SeedFinder calls it mostly sativa; Leafly simply says hybrid.
- Ancestry (most cited): Kaboom × Sour Pez. Per SeedFinder, Kaboom is Jack's Cleaner × Vortex, and Sour Pez is Pink Pez × Sour Diesel.
- Breeder: Nerds Genetics, per SeedFinder and Weedmaps. Kaboom itself traces to TGA Seeds.
- THC: Leafly lists 18%; AllBud 15–23%; an Illinois batch reviewed by Illinois News Joint tested 24.04% THCA.
- CBD: Negligible — Leafly lists 0%, AllBud about 1%.
- Aliases: Warhead, Warheadz, War Headz, War Heads.
Where the sour comes from
Each half of the Kaboom × Sour Pez cross has a job. Kaboom is a sativa built from two sativas, Jack's Cleaner and Vortex, and growers know it as tall and high-yielding; Ivy Hall credits it with the fast, concentrated head buzz. Sour Pez — itself Pink Pez crossed with Sour Diesel — brings the candy-sweet and sour fuel character and, per Ivy Hall, takes some of the edge off the high. The breeder's own description on SeedFinder says the strain recalls the yellow sour candies of childhood: a strong sour flavor that resolves into a sweet lemon aftertaste.
Which Warheads is which? The rival cuts
Warheads is a name several growers have used for different plants, so the jar in front of you may not be the Nerds Genetics cross. What the sources say:
- Kaboom × Sour Pez (Nerds Genetics): the version on SeedFinder, AllBud, Weedmaps' description and Ivy Hall's Illinois "Warheadz." Sativa-leaning, sour lemon, energizing.
- Garanimals × Watermelon OG: SeedFinder lists a Lit Farms "War Heads" from this cross, and Maryland's Kind Tree sells a Warheads from Garanimals #2 × Watermelon OG — fruity, melon and sweet. Weedmaps calls this the East Coast version and describes it as indica-dominant with uplifting effects.
- Sour Diesel × Animal Cookies × Apple Fritter: the Warheads listed by Royal Tree Gardens, with diesel, apple and butter flavors and a "dreamy, fast-acting, tingly, relaxed" effect.
Two more claims don't hold up well. Weedmaps' parents widget shows Colombian Cookies × Amnesia Haze, which contradicts its own description — and is the lineage usually given for the separate strain Galactic Warheads. One dispensary blog gives both Kaboom × Sour Pez and OG Kush × Sour Diesel on the same page. Galactic Warheads and Lemon Warheads are separate strains with their own names; don't assume they're the same plant.
Warheads Terpene Profile
Leafly's lab-sourced data lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and linalool. The Illinois batch reviewed by Illinois News Joint led with caryophyllene, then myrcene and pinene, and Ivy Hall adds humulene. The sour-lemon character most people describe usually points to limonene in the mix too, though no source we found quantifies it for Warheads.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, herbal base
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the diesel edge
Pinene — pine, alertness
Linalool — floral, softening
Typical relative profile for Warheads — myrcene-led per Leafly; one Illinois batch was caryophyllene-led. Varies by cut and grower.
- Myrcene: Earthy and herbal; the base under the sour top notes and part of why the high isn't all head.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery spice and a diesel edge from the Sour Diesel side — the most prominent taste in Ivy Hall's write-up.
- Pinene: Fresh pine, and part of the alert, focused reputation.
- Linalool: Floral and soft; a minor note that rounds off the sour.
The candy sourness isn't one terpene. It's the whole blend — citrus-leaning terpenes riding on a sour-fuel Sour Diesel backbone.
Appearance
AllBud describes long, tapered, forest-green nugs with amber undertones, matching amber hairs and chunky trichomes. The Illinois batch reviewed by Illinois News Joint looked different: pale turf-green buds with thick fire-orange hairs bunched in the creases, royal-purple sugar leaves and a dense, milky frost, sticky when broken. Most reviewers agree on bright green, orange pistils and heavy resin — which is what you want to see in a jar.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a good jar and the name makes sense: sour lemon and citrus first, then sugar. Weedmaps describes "super sour citrus" up front with sweetness in the aftertaste and subtle earthy, woody notes on the nose; AllBud's flavor list is candy, citrus, lemon, sour and sweet. One Ivy Hall customer put it simply — it smells like the candy and tastes sweet and sour. Leafly's users add a chestnut, nutty and diesel side, and one reviewer described "very citrus with a chemically" diesel backbone — the Sour Diesel grandparent showing through.
Cuts vary a lot. The Illinois batch read green-apple candy, grapefruit and cucumber with an oddly savory honey-mustard note and an earthy, mushroomy finish. Kind Tree's Watermelon OG version leans fruity and melon-sweet instead of sour.
Recreational Effects
Warheads is a fast, energizing strain. Leafly calls its effects "mostly energizing," and its reviewers' top effects are:
- Energetic: the quick head lift that makes it a wake-and-bake pick on AllBud.
- Focused: a common report, though Illinois News Joint's reviewer found it playful and distractible instead.
- Creative: ideas, music and projects in the first hour.
- Happy and euphoric: AllBud adds euphoria, happiness and an uplifted mood.
- Tingly: Illinois News Joint describes waves of tingling euphoria through the body.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a fast, cerebral lift — reviewers repeatedly call it quick.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — upbeat, chatty and creative, with a light body tingle.
- 1–3 hours: a gentle settle, often with an appetite bump. Some reviewers call it a creeper, so pace yourself.
Ivy Hall's verified buyers describe feeling awake and alert without couch-lock — one said they were "relaxed, happy, and totally chill" without feeling anxious. Others found it slightly heavier than a pure sativa. Dose decides which side you get.

How Strong Is Warheads?
Warheads is potent but not an extreme outlier. The numbers by source:
- Leafly: 18% THC — "higher THC than average," by Leafly's scale.
- AllBud: 15–23% THC.
- Illinois News Joint (one Illinois batch): 24.04% THCA, 0.38% delta-9 THC, 24.99% total cannabinoids.
Weedmaps still calls it best for experienced consumers, and that tracks with the reviews: the onset is fast, and "paranoid" shows up among Leafly's top negatives. The rival cuts can test differently, so the strain name alone tells you little about potency. If you've seen 25–29% claims for "Warheads," check whether it's actually Galactic Warheads — Elevate lists that separate strain at 20–29%.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Warheads batch against the 15–24% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Warheads vs Similar Strains
- vs Sour Diesel: the grandparent on the Sour Pez side. Sour Diesel is gassier and more pungent; Warheads trades some fuel for lemon-candy sweetness.
- vs Super Lemon Haze and Lemon Haze: the same bright, lemony, energizing lane. The Hazes are more zesty and floral; Warheads is more sour-candy.
- vs Sour Apple: another candy-sour strain. Sour Apple leans green apple; some Warheads cuts show that green-apple note too.
- vs Runtz and Zkittlez: the candy-strain benchmarks. One AllBud reviewer compared Warheads to Runtz but "more sour"; Warheads is also more energizing than either.
- vs Dayglow Mousse: our closest in-stock match — a sativa-leaning citrus hybrid with the same bright, functional daytime lift, without the sour-candy bite.
Who Warheads Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: daytime smokers who want energy and focus; creative work, errands and social plans; anyone who likes sour, citrusy, candy-forward flavors.
Poor fit: anyone looking for a sleep strain, or people prone to racing thoughts and THC anxiety. For something gentler and fruitier, Strawberry 2.1 is the lighter option on our shelf.
How to Use Warheads THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the sour lemon before it fades. Around 350–380°F keeps the citrus top notes bright; 390–410°F brings out the earthier, spicier side.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 10–15 minutes — it's fast, but some reviewers call it a creeper. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full energetic arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the top reason on Leafly (about 21% of reviewers) — though "paranoid" is also among its top negatives, so low doses matter.
- Stress: about 12% of Leafly reviewers.
- Pain: about 12% of Leafly reviewers.
- Fatigue, low mood and focus: AllBud lists fatigue, depression and ADD/ADHD among reported uses, consistent with its energizing profile.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth — the most common complaint on Leafly.
- Paranoia or anxiety — in Leafly's top negatives, more likely at high doses or low tolerance.
- Dizziness — occasionally reported, usually from overdoing it.
- Appetite — several reviewers note a hunger bump on the back end.
Is Warheads good for sleep? Not usually — it's stimulating. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Warheads Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Warheads. A good seller can tell you the parents — Kaboom × Sour Pez, Garanimals × Watermelon OG, or something else. "It's Warheads" is not an answer.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- The sour should be loud. A real Kaboom × Sour Pez cut smells sharply of sour citrus the moment the jar opens. Flat, hay-like flower has lost its terpenes.
- Frost and color — bright green with orange hairs and visible trichomes inside the bud, not just on top.
- A proper cure — sticky but not wet, and it should break apart cleanly.
Growing Warheads
Growing data for Warheads is thin, so here's what the sources actually support for the Nerds Genetics cross.
- Flowering: about 67 days on average per SeedFinder; the breeder lists 63–70 days (9–10 weeks).
- Indoor/outdoor: SeedFinder lists it as suitable for both.
- Height: expect stretch — the Kaboom parent is known to grow tall with high yields, so top or train early.
- Yield: no published figure for Warheads itself.
- Seeds: SeedFinder notes it was never released as feminized seed, so most Warheads in circulation is clone-only or from regular seed. Rival cuts come from different breeders entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Warheads indica or sativa?
Warheads is a sativa-leaning hybrid. AllBud lists it 65% sativa / 35% indica and SeedFinder calls it mostly sativa. The East Coast Garanimals × Watermelon OG version is described by Weedmaps as indica-dominant, so check which cut you're buying.
What is Warheads a cross of?
The most cited version is Kaboom × Sour Pez from Nerds Genetics — Kaboom is Jack's Cleaner × Vortex, and Sour Pez is Pink Pez × Sour Diesel. Other growers sell Warheads made from Garanimals × Watermelon OG, or Sour Diesel × Animal Cookies × Apple Fritter.
Why is it called Warheads?
It's named after the famously sour candy because of its sharp, sour-lemon flavor and sweet finish. The breeder says it recalls the yellow sour candies of childhood. The strain has no connection to the candy company.
Is Warhead the same as Warheads?
Yes. Warhead, Warheads, Warheadz and War Headz are spellings of the same name. Galactic Warheads and Lemon Warheads are separate strains.
What does Warheads taste like?
Sour lemon and citrus candy first, then a sweet aftertaste, with earthy and woody notes on the nose. Some cuts add diesel, nutty or green-apple notes.

Is Warheads the same as Galactic Warheads?
No. Galactic Warheads is a separate, indica-leaning strain usually listed as Colombian Cookies × Amnesia Haze or Warhead × Galactic Gas, with higher reported THC (20–29%).
How long does Warheads take to flower?
About 63–70 days per the breeder, around 67 days on average per SeedFinder. It can stretch, so top or train it early.
