Bubble Gum Gelato Strain

Bubble Gum Gelato Strain: Old-School Candy Meets the Gelato Family

The Bubble Gum Gelato strain — usually written Bubblegum Gelato, or just BG Gelato — is an indica-leaning hybrid that crosses Gelato #45 with Indiana Bubblegum, the Midwest clone behind the classic Bubble Gum strain. Leafly and the Oklahoma grower Electraleaf credit the cross to Backpack Boyz, and Barney's Farm sells a feminized seed version it says it developed with them. Crack a jar and you get sweet cherry, berry and pink bubblegum candy over an earthy base with a creamy finish. The high starts with a happy, giggly lift and settles into a heavy, relaxed body. It sits in the sweet, dessert corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain the internet describes in very different ways. Published THC numbers run from 16% to a seed-bank claim of 32%, the "dominant terpene" changes depending on who you ask, and one California grower calls its cut "earthy, gassy funk" rather than candy. Below: what's actually known about the lineage, why the numbers disagree, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how it compares with the rest of the Gelato family, how to judge a bag, and what to buy if you can't find it.

A 360° look at Bubble Gum Gelato's frosty buds.

Bubble Gum Gelato Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. Leafly files it under indica; AllBud, Verilife and Barney's Farm all list it around 60% indica, 40% sativa; Strainpedia calls it a balanced 50/50.
  • Ancestry: Gelato #45 × Indiana Bubblegum. Leafly, AllBud, Barney's Farm, Electraleaf, GrowDiaries and Strainpedia all agree. High Season, a California indoor grower, shortens it to "Gelato 45 × Bubblegum" — almost certainly the same cross.
  • Breeder: Backpack Boyz, per Leafly and Electraleaf. GrowDiaries lists Barney's Farm, and Barney's own seed page describes Bubblegum Gelato as a collaboration with Backpack Boyz — so the clone and the seed line trace to the same partnership.
  • THC: Leafly 18%; AllBud 16–19%; Electraleaf 16%; Strainpedia 20–26%; Zamnesia's seed listing 24%; one lab-tested batch on Hytiva 25.38%; Barney's Farm claims about 32%.
  • CBD: Negligible — AllBud lists about 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
  • Aliases: Bubblegum Gelato, BG Gelato, BGG.

The Gelato #45 side

Gelato is the San Francisco dessert line built from Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. The famous numbered cuts — Gelato #33, Gelato #41 and the rest — are individual plants picked from that seed run. "Gelato #45" is a bit of a puzzle: Seeds Here Now's history of the line says Mr. Sherbinski put his stamp on only six selections (#25, #33, #41, #43, #47 and #49), so #45 isn't one of the official set. It still shows up as a parent in several popular crosses, including Watermelon Gelato. Verilife describes Gelato #45 as "highly potent," and it brings the creamy dessert finish, the density and the frost.

The Indiana Bubblegum side

Indiana Bubblegum is the clone that became Bubble Gum — a Midwest cut taken to Amsterdam in the early 1990s and stabilized by Serious Seeds and T.H. Seeds, then a regular on the Cannabis Cup circuit. Verilife calls it "less-documented"; nobody has published its parents. It contributes the pink-candy sweetness, the fruity, floral top notes and a calmer, more mellow body than most modern dessert strains.

Phenotypes and look-alikes

Expect variation. Seed-grown Bubble Gum Gelato from Barney's Farm is a different population from the Backpack Boyz clone, and California menus also carry a "Blue Bubblegum Gelato," which is a separate product. If a jar leans gassy and earthy rather than sweet, you may be holding a Gelato-dominant cut — High Season's tasting notes read "earthy, gassy, funk."

Bubble Gum Gelato Terpene Profile

There's no single agreed terpene profile, which tells you how much cuts vary. Leafly's description, Electraleaf and High Season all name myrcene as dominant; Leafly's own terpene chart puts pinene first, then caryophyllene and linalool; a lab-tested batch listed on Hytiva led with limonene (1.15 mg/g), then linalool (0.55 mg/g) and myrcene (0.41 mg/g). Zamnesia lists caryophyllene, myrcene and linalool. The common thread is myrcene, caryophyllene and linalool, with limonene and pinene moving up or down by batch.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, fruity, relaxed body

Limonene — sweet candy-citrus lift

Caryophyllene — pepper, the Gelato backbone

Linalool — floral, calming

Pinene — fresh pine, clarity

Typical relative profile for Bubble Gum Gelato across published sources — myrcene-led in most write-ups, but individual lab tests vary widely. Check the batch COA.

  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky with a ripe-fruit edge; the most-cited dominant terpene and a big part of the heavy, relaxed finish.
  • Limonene: Bright and sweet; it lifts the cherry and candy notes and the happy onset.
  • Caryophyllene: Peppery and warm — the Gelato-family backbone, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Linalool: Floral and lavender-like; it explains the "rose" and "flowery" tags on Leafly and adds to the calm.
  • Pinene: Fresh pine that keeps the head a little clearer — Leafly's chart ranks it first.

The bubblegum isn't one terpene. It's the overall blend — fruity esters and floral linalool over a sweet base — and it's louder in Bubblegum-leaning cuts than in Gelato-leaning ones.

Appearance

AllBud describes fluffy, oversized forest-green nugs threaded with long, thin orange hairs and a coat of tiny golden-amber trichomes; reviewers and GrowDiaries growers describe the buds as dense, sticky and resinous. Strainpedia notes purple and deep-green hues and a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, which makes for clean, easy-to-trim buds. Gelato-leaning cuts tend to be tighter and frostier; Bubblegum-leaning cuts are lighter green and a little airier.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a good jar and the first hit is sweet: cherry, mixed berry and pink bubblegum, with AllBud's users adding raspberry and cotton candy. Underneath sits an earthy base, and some batches carry a thin line of gas. Break a bud and the fruit gets brighter. The inhale is sugary cherry-berry candy; the exhale is creamy and smooth, with a light floral finish — Leafly's tags are rose, flowery and earthy. Barney's Farm describes "a creamy finish" with hints of citrus. The exception is High Season's California cut, which it describes as "earthy, gassy, funk" — proof that not every BG Gelato tastes like candy.

Recreational Effects

Bubble Gum Gelato is a head-then-body strain. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.6-star rating from 79 reviews, the most-reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect — a calm that deepens with dose.
  • Focused: more clear-headed than you'd expect from an indica-leaning strain, especially early on.
  • Giggly: a happy, social lift in the first hour.
  • Euphoric and creative: AllBud lists creative, euphoric, happy and uplifting, and says it "eases racing thoughts."
  • Hungry: AllBud and Electraleaf both flag the munchies.

Not everyone agrees on how energetic it is. Barney's Farm describes its seed version as creative, energetic and talkative, while Leafly reviewers report everything from a light buzz to full couch-lock. Dose and phenotype explain most of that gap.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–15 minutes: a gentle cerebral lift — Leafly reviewers say it builds over 10–15 minutes rather than hitting all at once.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — happy, giggly and relaxed, with a warm body buzz.
  • 1–3 hours: a slow slide into heavy relaxation. Higher doses can end on the couch or in bed.

Because the onset creeps, wait the full 15 minutes before deciding you need more.

How Strong Is Bubble Gum Gelato?

It depends entirely on whose number you trust. Here's every figure we found:

  • Electraleaf (grower): 16% THC — the company calls it "a perfect entry point for novice cannabis consumers."
  • AllBud: 16–19%.
  • Leafly: 18%, which Leafly describes as higher than average.
  • Strainpedia: 20–26%.
  • Zamnesia (Barney's seeds): 24%.
  • Hytiva lab listing: 25.38% on one tested batch.
  • Barney's Farm: about 32% for its feminized seeds — a seed-bank claim, not an independent lab result.

The honest answer: Bubble Gum Gelato is mid-to-high potency. Older database listings put it in the high teens, while modern indoor cuts commonly test in the mid-20s. It's not the heaviest hitter in the Gelato family, and the slow onset makes it friendlier than its numbers suggest, but it's not a beginner strain at the top of that range either. Is it good for beginners? At a single small hit, yes. Several sources say it works for newer consumers, but the high-20s batches deserve respect.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Bubble Gum Gelato batch against the 16–26% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Bubble Gum Gelato vs Similar Strains

  • vs Bubble Gum: the candy parent. Bubble Gum is lighter, fluffier and typically 15–20% THC; BG Gelato adds Gelato's density, cream and potency.
  • vs Gelato: the dessert parent family. Gelato leans berry-citrus and sherbet with more fuel; BG Gelato is sweeter, more cherry-candy and a little mellower.
  • vs Gelato Cake: Verilife lists Gelato Cake as more indica-dominant (75/25) and heavier — a nighttime strain. BG Gelato is more social.
  • vs Watermelon Gelato: a half-sibling through Gelato 45, with watermelon and sour-candy notes instead of cherry bubblegum.
  • vs Runtz and Cosmic Runtz: Gelato crossed with Zkittlez instead of Bubblegum — the same candy-sweet, Gelato-backed idea with a fruitier, tropical spin. Cosmic Runtz is our closest in-stock match.
  • vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: another Gelato-family dessert strain built around cherry — tarter and more citrus-forward, with a similar relaxed finish.
  • vs Strawnana: another Bubble Gum descendant (via a strawberry phenotype of Serious Seeds' Bubble Gum) with a sweet fruit-candy profile.

Who Bubble Gum Gelato Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: fans of sweet, candy and dessert strains; late-afternoon or evening sessions with friends; anyone who wants a happy head and a relaxed body without being knocked out after one hit.

Poor fit: people looking for a sharp, energizing daytime strain, or anyone prone to THC anxiety at high doses — "anxious" is one of Leafly's top negatives. For a lighter, fruitier daytime option, Strawberry 2.1 is the gentler pick on our shelf.

How to Use Bubble Gum Gelato THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the candy. Around 350–370°F keeps the cherry and bubblegum notes bright; 390–410°F brings out the creamy, heavier Gelato side.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15 minutes — the onset builds slowly. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full head-to-body arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 27% of reviewers) — though "anxious" is also a reported negative, so low doses are key.
  • Stress: about 26% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud lists chronic stress.
  • Low mood: about 20% of Leafly reviewers cite depression, consistent with the happy, giggly onset.
  • Appetite, fatigue and sleep: AllBud also tags appetite loss, fatigue, insomnia, nausea and chronic pain; Electraleaf notes its appetite-stimulating reputation.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth — the most common complaint.
  • Anxiety — among Leafly's top negatives, usually from overdoing a high-THC batch.
  • Headache or dizziness — reported on Leafly and GrowDiaries.
  • Sleepiness — an AllBud reviewer warns that too much puts you to sleep.

Is Bubble Gum Gelato good for sleep? At higher doses, many people find the heavy finish helps them wind down; at low doses it's more social than sedating. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Bubble Gum Gelato Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Sweet on the nose. A good BG Gelato should smell like cherry, berry or candy when you open it. Flat, hay-like or purely earthy jars suggest a weak cut or a rushed cure.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Frost and stickiness, with trichomes deep in the bud, not just dusted on top.
  • Ask where the cut came from. A Backpack Boyz clone, a Barney's Farm seed pheno and a "Blue Bubblegum Gelato" are not the same thing.
  • A proper cure — the buds should be sticky but snap, not crumble to dust or feel damp.

Growing Bubble Gum Gelato

Seeds are available from Barney's Farm as a feminized photoperiod line. GrowDiaries growers describe a fairly robust plant with indica structure and dense, resinous buds, rated easy to normal to grow.

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors (Zamnesia, GrowDiaries); Barney's Farm lists 60–70 days.
  • Yield: up to 550 g/m² indoors and up to 1,000 g per plant outdoors, per Barney's Farm under optimal conditions.
  • Height: around 120 cm indoors and 225–230 cm outdoors.
  • Outdoors: harvest in the first two weeks of October in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Tips: low-stress training helps open the canopy; keep humidity steady late in flower, because dense colas can hold moisture; and dry it slowly — a GrowDiaries grower says a slow dry is what keeps the candy terpenes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bubble Gum Gelato indica or sativa?

Bubble Gum Gelato is an indica-leaning hybrid. AllBud, Verilife and Barney's Farm list it around 60% indica and 40% sativa, and Leafly files it under indica. The high starts happy and heady, then settles into a relaxed body.

What is Bubble Gum Gelato a cross of?

Gelato #45 × Indiana Bubblegum, the Midwest clone behind the classic Bubble Gum strain. Leafly and Electraleaf credit Backpack Boyz; Barney's Farm sells a feminized seed version developed with them.

How strong is Bubble Gum Gelato?

Sources range from 16% (Electraleaf) and 16–19% (AllBud) to 18% (Leafly), 25.38% on one lab-tested batch, and a seed-bank claim of about 32% from Barney's Farm. Most modern indoor cuts land in the high teens to mid-20s.

What does Bubble Gum Gelato taste like?

Sweet cherry, berry and bubblegum candy on the inhale, with a creamy, lightly floral exhale and an earthy base. Some cuts lean gassier and earthier.

What are the effects of Bubble Gum Gelato?

Leafly reviewers most often report feeling relaxed, focused and giggly; AllBud adds euphoric, creative, happy and hungry. It builds over 10–15 minutes and can turn sleepy at higher doses.

Is Bubble Gum Gelato good for beginners?

In small doses, yes — Electraleaf calls it an entry point for novice consumers. But batches testing in the mid-20s are strong, so take one small hit and wait 15 minutes.

Is Bubble Gum Gelato good for sleep?

At higher doses many people find the heavy, relaxed finish helps them wind down. At low doses it's more social and happy than sedating.

What are the terpenes in Bubble Gum Gelato?

Who bred Bubble Gum Gelato?

Backpack Boyz, according to Leafly and Electraleaf. Barney's Farm sells the seed version and describes it as a collaboration with Backpack Boyz.

Is Bubble Gum Gelato the same as Bubble Gum or Gelato?

No. It's a cross of the two — Gelato #45 with Indiana Bubblegum — so it's sweeter and candier than Gelato, and denser, creamier and usually stronger than Bubble Gum.

How long does Bubble Gum Gelato take to flower?

About 8–9 weeks indoors per Zamnesia and GrowDiaries (Barney's Farm lists 60–70 days), with outdoor harvests in early October.
