Don Mega Strain: Chem, Garlic and a Heavy Landing
The Don Mega strain — also sold as The Don Mega — is a modern funk heavyweight from Solfire Gardens, a Pacific Northwest seed company. It crosses GMO, the garlic-and-chem cookies strain, with Solfire's own Black Banana. The result smells like chemicals, roasted garlic and "funky gym socks," tests in the high 20s for THC on most menus, and delivers a quick euphoric lift that settles into deep, hungry body calm. It sits in the same loud, savory neighborhood as Garlic Breath and Mule Fuel, and in our THCA flower collection it lines up with the heavy, gassy evening jars.
Don Mega has also become a breeding workhorse — Solfire and other breeders have crossed it with Biscotti, Ice Cream Cake, Gushers, Cereal Milk, Jealousy and Red Runtz. Below: what's actually documented about its genetics, where the sources disagree, what the potency numbers mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Don Mega's frosty buds.

Don Mega Strain Genetics & Lineage
- Type: Hybrid. AllBud, Mammoth and SeedFinder's write-up describe an "evenly balanced" 50/50; Weedmaps and Hytiva call it indica-dominant. The reported effects — relaxed, hungry, sleepy at higher doses — read indica-leaning.
- Ancestry: GMO (also called Garlic Cookies or GMO Cookies, itself Chemdawg × GSC) × Black Banana. Every source we checked agrees on these two parents.
- Breeder: Solfire Gardens, credited on SeedFinder, Weedmaps and GrowDiaries. SeedFinder says Solfire was founded in 2015 by a University of Washington biology student.
- THC: 27–29% per AllBud and SeedFinder; 25–33% per Michigan grower Pro Gro Cannabis. CBD is negligible (0.08% on Hytiva's tested batch).
- Aliases: The Don Mega; Leafly shortens it to "Tdm."
Black Banana: the half nobody explains
GMO is famous; Black Banana isn't. It's a Solfire Gardens strain, and in the company's 2018 lineup post on THCFarmer, Solfire gave its lineage as "Banana Fire Cookies (Relentless) x BlackBerry Kush (orgn Kids)," picked as keeper #9 after a hunt of about 300 plants, with "big frosty buds with colorful phenos." The same lineup lists Don Mega simply as "GMO x Black Banana."
That's where the one real conflict sits. SeedFinder's own family tree matches Solfire (Blackberry Kush × Banana Fire Cookies), but the article text on the same page says Black Banana is Banana Kush × Blackberry Kush. We go with the breeder's own post. One long-form strain blog also credits "breeder circles associated with Skunk House Genetics" — Skunk House is GMO's breeder, not Don Mega's.
Where the name comes from
Weedmaps says the name means "best of the best" — a don is the boss, and "mega" describes nearly everything about this plant: the THC, the stretch, the yields and the smell. SeedFinder's headline puts it as "Mega Size, Mega Yields, Mega Flavor."
Don Mega's offspring
Don Mega's biggest legacy may be as a parent. SeedFinder lists more than two dozen direct descendants, including:
- Bosscotti (Solfire) — Biscotti × Don Mega.
- Cake Boss (Solfire) — Ice Cream Cake × Don Mega.
- Dirty Squirt (Solfire) — Gushers × Don Mega.
- Don Juan de Milko (Elev8 Seeds) — Don Mega × Cereal Milk.
- Home Wrecker (FireFly Genetics) — Jealousy × Don Mega.
- Game Time (Exotic Genetix) — Don Mega × Red Runtz.
- Barf Breath, Happy Hour and Dirty Water (Solfire) — Don Mega crossed with Giggle Gas, Strawberry Jelly and a Pink Lemonade line.
Leafly also lists Why U Gelly and Orange Cannoli as Don Mega children.
Don Mega Terpene Profile
Don Mega runs on the classic GMO stack. Hytiva's lab-tested batch put beta-caryophyllene on top at 0.81 mg/g, followed by limonene (0.47 mg/g) and beta-myrcene (0.46 mg/g). SeedFinder and Pro Gro Cannabis name the same three terpenes. Caryophyllene is the one worth knowing: it's the only common terpene known to bind CB2 receptors directly.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the chem-garlic backbone
Limonene — sour citrus edge
Myrcene — earthy, heavy body
Relative profile from Hytiva's lab-tested Don Mega batch (0.81 / 0.47 / 0.46 mg/g). Batches vary by grower and cure.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery and spicy; it carries the chem-and-garlic weight inherited from GMO, and it's the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Limonene: The sour citrus that most reviewers pick up on the inhale, and part of the brief euphoric lift up front.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it's associated with the heavy, couch-friendly body that takes over later.
The garlic and cheese aren't explained by these three terpenes alone. Research on pungent cannabis points to trace volatile sulfur compounds — likely part of what gives GMO and Garlic Breath their savory funk — which is why Don Mega can smell louder than its terpene numbers suggest.
Appearance
SeedFinder describes dense, chunky, conical buds ranging from forest green to deep purple, with bright orange pistils and a thick coat of trichomes. Hytiva adds long amber pistils that give the buds "a fiery glow," and Weedmaps calls the nugs "oversized" and "extra-tall," green and purple with amber undertones. AllBud's growers describe longer, pepper-shaped buds; one reviewer found them rounder and tightly packed — expect some variation between cuts. A good cure is sticky and greasy to the touch; The Highest Critic's review of an Oregon batch called it "sticky, greasy, but not at all moist."
Aroma and Flavor
Don Mega is not a fruit strain. SeedFinder quotes Solfire's own description — "from chem to funky gym socks" — and notes the profile avoids fruity tones entirely. Crack a jar and you get chemical funk, skunk and earthy spice; grind it and the garlic jumps out. Hytiva's batch smelled of fuel, citrus and "over-ripened cheese." The Highest Critic's reviewer wrote "funky, roasted garlic feet," and Pro Gro Cannabis lists skunk, chem and garlic as its three aromas. Leafly's reviewers go further: their top flavors are ammonia, tar and chemical, with others noting pepper, gas and pine.
On the inhale it's sour and citrusy with a sharp chemical edge; the exhale turns spicy and cheesy, per Mammoth and AllBud. If you love GMO, Donny Burger or Chemdawg, this is your lane. If you want candy, it isn't.
Recreational Effects
Don Mega opens with a quick head change and a short window of euphoria and creativity, then settles into deep body relaxation. SeedFinder calls it "a euphoric cerebral buzz accompanied by deep relaxation throughout the body," best suited to evening or night. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.6 rating from 109 ratings, the top-reported effects are:
- Relaxed: the headline effect — Leafly sums it up as "mostly calming."
- Hungry: the munchies are real; Hytiva suggests keeping healthy snacks nearby.
- Euphoric: a mood lift up front that lingers under the body high.
- Tingly and happy: commonly reported on AllBud and GrowDiaries.
- Sleepy: at higher doses — AllBud's reviewers warn it can cause couch-lock or nodding off.
One Leafly reviewer calls it a solid after-work strain that doesn't cause sleepiness; others say it put them on the couch. Dose decides which one you get.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a quick head change and a bright, chatty lift. AllBud's reviewers call it a "creeper," so the full weight arrives later.
- 20–60 minutes: the peak — the euphoria softens into a heavy, tingly body calm and the appetite kicks in.
- 1–3 hours: a long, relaxed taper. At higher doses, this is where the couch wins.
Because it creeps, wait a full 15 minutes between hits before deciding you need more.

How Strong Is Don Mega?
Don Mega is a high-potency strain by any measure. The numbers by source:
- AllBud and SeedFinder: 27–29% THC.
- Pro Gro Cannabis (Michigan grower): 25–33%.
- GrowDiaries: 28%, with about 0.1% CBD.
- Lab-tested retail batches: 27.29% THC on Hytiva's sample; 28.58% on a Mammoth batch.
Leafly doesn't publish a THC figure for it. For context, SeedFinder puts the GMO parent at 25–30%+ and Black Banana at only 18–19%, so the potency comes from the GMO side. Is it one of the strongest strains around? It's firmly in the upper tier — but potency varies more between growers and batches than between strain names, so the COA matters more than the label. One Leafly reviewer's warning sums it up: "rookies be very careful."
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Don Mega batch against the 25–33% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Don Mega vs Similar Strains
- vs GMO: the parent that does the talking. The Highest Critic's reviewer says Don Mega "leans heavy on GMO for its terpene profile." Don Mega adds Black Banana's color and a slightly rounder, sour-citrus edge.
- vs Garlic Breath: another GMO-family savory strain. Similar garlic funk, comparable evening use.
- vs Mule Fuel: GMO × Lurch — Don Mega's closest genetic cousin on our shelf, sharing the GMO parent. More diesel and skunk, the same heavy landing.
- vs Donny Burger: savory, garlicky and heavy, with a similar "don" swagger. Pick whichever funk you prefer.
- vs Permanent Marker: a different family — (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy — with a sharp chemical, marker-cap nose and a potent, indica-leaning body. Less garlic, a little sweeter. It's our listed closest match because the loud chem nose and heavy evening body line up; it is not a Don Mega relative.
Who Don Mega Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced consumers who love savory, chemical, garlicky funk; evening sessions; anyone who wants potency and a strong appetite boost.
Poor fit: beginners, anyone prone to THC anxiety, or someone looking for a fruity or daytime strain. If you want the same weight with a sweeter nose, Super Boof is the dark-fruit-over-gas option on our shelf.
How to Use Don Mega THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the citrus and cheese under the chem. Around 350–380°F keeps the brighter notes; 390–410°F brings out the heavy body. SeedFinder calls vaping or dabbing the way to push both the high and the taste to the limit.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15 minutes — Don Mega is potent and creeps. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc without tipping into couch-lock. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, AllBud and Hytiva, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (31%) — though "anxious" is also one of its top negatives, so dose matters.
- Low mood: 24% of Leafly reviewers.
- Stress: 21% on Leafly, and among AllBud's top uses.
- Sleep and appetite: AllBud and GrowDiaries list insomnia and appetite loss; Hytiva's users add nausea and muscle aches.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth — the most common complaint by far; one Leafly reviewer called it extreme and suggests extra water.
- Dizziness and anxiety — both among Leafly's and GrowDiaries' top negatives, especially at high doses or low tolerance.
- Red eyes — SeedFinder flags it alongside dry mouth.
- Couch-lock and sedation — welcome at night, not before you need to get anything done.
Is Don Mega good for sleep? For many consumers, yes, at a full dose and later in the evening. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Don Mega Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Funk, not fruit. Real Don Mega smells like chem, garlic and cheese. If it smells like candy, it's a different cut or a different strain.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Trichome coverage all the way into the bud, plus long amber-orange pistils and purple shading on many cuts.
- A sticky, greasy cure that isn't wet. Hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
- The name. "The Don Mega" and "Don Mega" are the same strain; Bosscotti, Cake Boss or Game Time are crosses of it, not the original.
Growing Don Mega
Don Mega is a big, hungry plant built for experienced growers. SeedFinder says it "loves her food" and calls it suited to skilled growers rather than beginners.
- Flowering: about 60–70 days (SeedFinder ~65 days; GrowDiaries 60–65; Hytiva 60–70).
- Stretch: stays compact in veg, then some plants double or triple in height during flower. Top and train early (low-stress training works well) and give it room.
- Yield: heavy — SeedFinder calls the yields "incredibly generous" but gives no figures, and Hytiva says "heavy yields."
- Support: outdoors it "excels," but SeedFinder warns branches can snap as the buds swell. Use trellis netting or stakes.
- Seeds: Solfire's Don Mega has never been released as feminized seeds (SeedFinder), so expect regular seeds and a pheno hunt.
Is Don Mega THCA Flower Legal?

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Don Mega indica or sativa?
Don Mega is a hybrid. AllBud and SeedFinder describe an even 50/50 split, while Weedmaps and Hytiva call it indica-dominant. Its most-reported effects — relaxed, hungry and sleepy at higher doses — read indica-leaning, and most people use it in the evening.
What is Don Mega a cross of?
GMO (Garlic Cookies) × Black Banana. Black Banana is Solfire Gardens' own Banana Fire Cookies × Blackberry Kush, per the breeder's 2018 lineup post; SeedFinder's article text lists it as Banana Kush × Blackberry Kush instead.
Who bred Don Mega?
Solfire Gardens, a Pacific Northwest seed company founded in 2015. One strain blog credits Skunk House Genetics, but Skunk House bred the GMO parent, not Don Mega.
Is The Don Mega the same as Don Mega?
Yes. Leafly lists it as The Don Mega, Weedmaps and most menus as Don Mega. Same Solfire GMO × Black Banana.
How strong is Don Mega?
Very. AllBud and SeedFinder list 27–29% THC, Pro Gro Cannabis 25–33%, and lab-tested batches have come in at 27.29% and 28.58%. It also creeps, so start small and wait.
What does Don Mega taste and smell like?
Chemical, garlicky and cheesy — Solfire describes it as 'from chem to funky gym socks.' Expect sour citrus on the inhale and a spicy, cheesy exhale. Leafly reviewers also report ammonia, tar, pepper and gas. It is not fruity.
What are the effects of Don Mega?
A quick euphoric lift followed by deep body relaxation. Leafly's top effects are relaxed, hungry and euphoric; AllBud adds tingly, happy and sleepy, with couch-lock at higher doses.
Is Don Mega good for sleep?
For many consumers, yes — at a full dose later in the evening it turns sedating. At low doses at least one reviewer finds it a functional after-work strain.
Is Don Mega good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 31% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' and 'dizzy' are also among its top-reported negatives. Low doses are the safer approach.
Is Don Mega good for beginners?
Not really — it's high-THC and it creeps. If you try it, take one small puff and wait at least 15 minutes.
How long does Don Mega take to flower?
About 60–70 days. It stretches hard in flower — sometimes doubling or tripling in height — and needs trellising so heavy branches don't snap.
What strains are crossed with Don Mega?
SeedFinder lists more than two dozen, including Bosscotti (Biscotti × Don Mega), Cake Boss (Ice Cream Cake × Don Mega), Dirty Squirt (Gushers × Don Mega), Don Juan de Milko (× Cereal Milk), Home Wrecker (Jealousy × Don Mega) and Game Time (× Red Runtz).
