Platinum OG Strain: The Silver-Coated Kush for Nighttime
The Platinum OG strain is a heavy, indica-dominant kush built from two of the most famous names in cannabis — Master Kush and OG Kush — plus a third parent that has never been confirmed. Most databases credit Apothecary Genetics with the cross. It gets its name from its look: a trichome coat so thick the buds shine silver-white, like the metal. It smells earthy, piney and peppery with an old-school gas edge, and it delivers a fast, sedating body high that most people save for the end of the day. It sits in the heavy, gassy corner of our THCA flower collection.
The label doesn't always tell the whole story: the third parent changes by source, Weedmaps files the name under Platinum Kush, and potency figures run from the high teens to 30%. Below: the verifiable genetics, effects, real potency, use, growing and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Platinum OG's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud and Wikipedia put it at roughly 75% indica / 25% sativa; Leafly and SeedFinder simply list it as indica.
- Ancestry: Master Kush × OG Kush × an unknown third strain — the version Leafly, AllBud and Canadian producer listings agree on.
- Breeder: Apothecary Genetics, a Washington-linked breeder per The Cannigma, credited on SeedFinder and Wikipedia. Leafly and AllBud name no breeder.
- THC: Leafly lists 19%; The Cannigma's lab averages come in at 18.6%; AllBud gives 20–24%; Wikipedia cites about 22%.
- Other cannabinoids: CBD is negligible (0–1%). The Cannigma lists about 0.7% CBG; AllBud lists around 1% CBN.
- Aliases: "Plt" on Leafly. Weedmaps treats Platinum OG as an alias of Platinum Kush (more on that below).
The third-parent question
Everyone agrees on Master Kush and OG Kush. After that, the sources split:
- Leafly, AllBud and Canada's Ontario Cannabis Store listing: a third parent, unidentified.
- Wikipedia: the third strain is "thought to be" Purps — and Wikipedia itself flags that claim as unsupported.
- The Cannigma: describes it as a mix of OG Kush, Master Kush, Afghani and Mendo Purps "among others," and admits the exact strains are uncertain.
- SeedFinder (Apothecary Genetics entry): the breeder description reads "OG male × Platinum OG," while the database's lineage tree traces it to Platinum Kush × Joe's OG Kush. In other words, the seed line on SeedFinder looks like a backcross of an existing Platinum OG cut.
The honest answer: Platinum OG is a Master Kush/OG Kush kush with an undocumented third ingredient. The occasional dark purple leaf Wikipedia describes on the buds is consistent with the Purps theory, but it isn't proof.
Platinum OG vs Platinum Kush — same strain?
Not necessarily. Weedmaps lists Platinum OG as an alias of Platinum Kush — which it describes as an early-1990s Master Kush × Afghani (or OG Kush × Afghani) hybrid — and warns that different varieties share the name. Leafly keeps them separate. Either way it's a heavy kush-family indica; the COA and the nose matter more than the name.
Why it's called Platinum OG
It's named for the frost. Leafly's description and its grow guide both credit the shiny, resin-heavy coat for the name, and The Cannigma compares the shimmer to precious metal. That same resin makes it a favorite for hash and concentrates.
Platinum OG Terpene Profile
Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene. The Cannigma's lab averages put numbers on it: myrcene 0.57%, limonene 0.46%, caryophyllene 0.43% and humulene 0.12%. Canadian producer listings flip the top two and lead with caryophyllene — a reminder that cut and grower shift the profile.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, herbal, heavy body
Limonene — a faint citrus lift
Caryophyllene — black pepper, the OG gas edge
Humulene — woody, earthy dryness
Relative profile based on The Cannigma's lab averages for Platinum OG (myrcene 0.57%, limonene 0.46%, caryophyllene 0.43%, humulene 0.12%).
- Myrcene: Earthy, musky and herbal — the terpene most associated with heavy, couch-bound indicas and the backbone of Platinum OG's sedating reputation.
- Limonene: A light citrus top note that some reviewers read as lemony; it softens the earth on the inhale.
- Caryophyllene: The black-pepper spice and part of the old-school gas on the exhale — the OG Kush fingerprint.
- Humulene: Woody and dry, the same terpene found in hops; it rounds out the pine-and-earth finish.
Appearance
Platinum OG earns its name on sight. Leafly describes lime-green flowers with orange hairs under a coat of trichomes heavy enough to look silver; the Ontario Cannabis Store calls the buds "dense" and "silvery." Wikipedia adds detail: medium-green, rock-hard buds that aren't especially sticky on the outside, darker-than-usual stems, and often one to three dark purple sugar leaves per bud. AllBud's reviewers, by contrast, call the buds frosty and sticky — expect some variation between cuts.
Aroma and Flavor
Earthy and pungent first, then pine and peppery spice; break a bud and the OG Kush gas comes up. AllBud describes diesel, spice and coffee on the nose, and coffee, herbal, pine, sweet and woody flavors on the smoke; the Ontario Cannabis Store lists black pepper, sweet earth, pine, herbs and "old school gas." Leafly tags it simply earthy, pine and pungent, and the breeder entry on SeedFinder says it tastes "like fresh pine nuts."
Recreational Effects
Platinum OG is a body strain. It comes on quickly with a short, heady lift, then settles into heavy physical relaxation that deepens the more you take. On Leafly, with more than a thousand ratings averaging 4.4 stars, the top reported effects are:
- Sleepy: the headline effect — this is a bedtime strain for most people.
- Relaxed: a full-body calm that loosens tension in the shoulders and back.
- Tingly: a warm body buzz, especially early on.
- Euphoric and happy: AllBud and The Cannigma both report a mood lift before the sedation takes over.
- Hungry: AllBud lists the munchies among its effects — plan accordingly.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a fast, heady onset — mellow, cerebral, a little euphoric.
- 15–60 minutes: the body takes over. Heavy limbs, deep relaxation, and couch-lock at higher doses.
- 1–3 hours: a slow slide toward sleep. Many people don't make it to the end of the movie.
Use it when you have nowhere to be.

How Strong Is Platinum OG?
Platinum OG has a reputation as a heavy hitter, but the published numbers are more modest than the reputation — and they swing widely by source and grower:
- Leafly: 19% THC, 0% CBD, with potency rated higher than average.
- The Cannigma: 18.6% THC on average across lab tests of flower sold as Platinum OG.
- Wikipedia: about 22% on average.
- AllBud: 20–24%, with one reviewer posting a 24.03% THC batch.
- Canadian producer label (Ontario Cannabis Store): 24–30% THC for one licensed grower's batches.
A typical jar lands around 19–24% THC; strong cuts push higher. The myrcene-heavy, sedating effect makes it feel stronger than its numbers. Start low.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Platinum OG batch against the 19–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Platinum OG vs Similar Strains
- vs OG Kush: the gassier, more heady parent. Platinum OG trades some of that lift for more body weight and more frost.
- vs Master Kush: the earthy, hashy, old-world indica parent. Platinum OG adds the OG's gas and pine.
- vs Kosher Kush and Bubba Kush: fellow heavy kush-family indicas. Kosher Kush is more lemon-pine, Bubba Kush sweeter and more coffee-chocolate; all three are bedtime strains.
- vs Ghost OG and Skywalker OG: other OG cuts in the same conversation. Ghost OG is more balanced and citrusy; Skywalker OG is closer in its sleepy body effect.
- vs Mule Fuel: not a relative — Mule Fuel is GMO Cookies × Lurch — but it lives in the same heavy, gassy, indica-leaning evening lane, and it's what we have on the shelf. Expect more funk and fuel and less pine than a true Platinum OG.
Who Platinum OG Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers who want a nighttime strain and fans of earthy, piney, old-school kush. Poor fit: daytime use and beginners who don't expect couch-lock.
How to Use Platinum OG THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the pine and pepper without the harsh smoke. Around 350–370°F keeps the flavor and a lighter body; 390–410°F brings out the full sedation.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–20 minutes — the body effect builds. Regular users usually find two or three hits gets them to the couch. Save it for the evening. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 35% of reviewers).
- Anxiety: about 31% report help — though AllBud lists paranoia as an occasional negative, so dose matters.
- Pain: about 27% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud's users also mention muscle spasms and aches.
- Sleep: "sleepy" is its top effect, and insomnia is among the most common reasons people choose it.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and AllBud.
- Dizziness — one of Leafly's top three negatives, usually from standing up too fast after a big hit.
- Heavy sedation and couch-lock — a feature at night, a problem during the day.
- Paranoia — occasionally reported, mostly at high doses or low tolerance.
Don't drive or operate machinery after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication (especially sedatives or sleep aids), are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Platinum OG Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- The frost should be obvious. A real Platinum OG looks silver-white under light. Green, bare buds with a Platinum label are a red flag.
- Earth, pine and pepper with gas behind it. If it smells fruity or candy-sweet, it's a different cut or a different strain.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30% claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Dense, heavy buds — kush structure, not airy or larfy.
- A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
Growing Platinum OG
Platinum OG is a compact-to-medium indica that prefers warmth and dry air. Sources disagree on difficulty — The Cannigma calls it easy and pest- and mold-resistant, while Leafly's grow guide rates it moderate to hard because of its appetite and modest yields.
- Flowering: about 9 weeks (around 63 days) indoors, per SeedFinder, Leafly and The Cannigma.
- Outdoors: harvest around early to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere; it likes warm, sunny, Mediterranean-style climates, ideally 70–80°F with little rain.
- Yield: on the low side — 200–350 g/m² indoors per SeedFinder and Wikipedia; Wikipedia lists 400–500 g/m² outdoors and The Cannigma about 12 oz per plant.
- Technique: Leafly recommends a screen of green (SCROG) to add bud sites, hydroponics to push resin and yield, and topping and pruning outdoors. It's a heavy feeder — CalMag and nitrogen keep it healthy.
- Seeds: SeedFinder notes Apothecary Genetics' version was never released as feminized seed; other seed banks sell their own versions, including autoflowers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Platinum OG indica or sativa?
Platinum OG is an indica-dominant hybrid — AllBud and Wikipedia put it at about 75% indica, and Leafly lists it as indica. Its effects are classic indica: sleepy, relaxed and heavy in the body.
What is Platinum OG a cross of?
Master Kush × OG Kush, plus a third parent that's never been confirmed. Wikipedia mentions Purps (and flags it as unsupported); The Cannigma names Afghani and Mendo Purps as possibilities.
Who bred Platinum OG?
Most sources, including SeedFinder, Wikipedia and The Cannigma, credit Apothecary Genetics. Leafly and AllBud don't name a breeder.
Why is it called Platinum OG?
For its trichomes. The resin coat is so heavy the buds look silver-white, like platinum — Leafly credits that shiny coat for the name.
How strong is Platinum OG?
Leafly lists 19% THC, lab averages run about 18.6%, AllBud gives 20–24%, and some commercial batches are labeled up to 30%. Its sedating effect makes it feel stronger than the number.
What are the effects of Platinum OG?
A quick, heady onset followed by heavy body relaxation. Leafly reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, relaxed and tingly; AllBud adds euphoric, happy and hungry.
What does Platinum OG taste like?
Earthy and piney with black pepper and old-school gas. Some cuts show coffee, herbal or sweet woody notes; the breeder entry describes it as tasting like fresh pine nuts.
Is Platinum OG good for sleep?

About 31% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, and stress (35%) is its most-cited use. Paranoia is an occasional negative at high doses, so start small.
Is Platinum OG the same as Platinum Kush?
Not necessarily. Weedmaps lists Platinum OG as an alias of Platinum Kush, but Leafly treats them as separate strains, and Weedmaps itself notes different varieties share the name. Both are heavy, kush-family indicas.
Is Platinum OG good for beginners?
Only with care. It's heavy and sedating, so take one small hit, wait 15–20 minutes, and use it when you don't need to do anything afterward.
How long does Platinum OG take to flower?
About 9 weeks (roughly 63 days) indoors, with outdoor harvests in early to mid-October. Yields are on the modest side.
