Pluto Strain: Gashouse's Heavy, Gassy Indica
The Pluto strain is a modern California indica from the brand Gashouse: Gelato #33 crossed with a 1991 Triangle Kush that was backcrossed once, bred by Seed Junky Genetics and released in 2022. It smells like diesel and chemical gas with berry and citrus behind it, grows dense, dark, purple-tinged buds, and delivers a spacey, happy lift that sinks into heavy, sleepy body calm. It sits in the evening corner of the THCA flower world, next to heavyweights like OG Kush and Bubba Kush.
Pluto is also one of the most confused names on dispensary menus. Pluto, Pluto Kush, Pluto Runtz and Granddaddy Pluto all show up, and they aren't always the same plant. Below: the documented lineage and the competing ones, how strong it really is, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to tell a real Pluto from a lookalike.
A 360° look at Pluto's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica-dominant. Leafly lists it as an indica; AllBud calls it a 70/30 indica-dominant hybrid; Weedmaps simply says hybrid. Every source agrees the effects finish heavy.
- Ancestry: Gelato #33 × 1991 Triangle Kush, backcrossed once — written "TK 91 Bx1."
- Breeder: According to Gashouse (as reported by Leafly), Seed Junky Genetics bred the cross and Gashouse picked its selection from those seeds. GrowDiaries notes Seed Junky confirmed the Gelato #33 × Triangle Kush Bx1 genetics on its official X account.
- Released: 2022, when it also became available as feminized seeds.
- THC: AllBud lists 21–23%; Seed Junky's seed listing on GrowDiaries cites about 22%; The Hemp Doctor gives 20–27%.
- CBD: Negligible — typically well under 1%.
Why Pluto's lineage is disputed
The Gelato #33 × Triangle Kush story is the best documented, because it comes from the brand and the breeder. But it isn't the only one in circulation:
- Mr H Genetics version: Weedmaps credits Gashouse with the G33 × TK91 cross but also cites a separate claim that Pluto is Bad Dogg × Cosmic Adventure from Mr H Genetics.
- "Classic" kush version: The Hemp Doctor notes that some people trace it to OG Kush × Quattro Kush.
- Unknown: AllBud lists Pluto as "an unknown combination of other hybrid strains" and says its heritage is widely debated.
The practical takeaway: a jar labeled Pluto from a Gashouse-linked source is most likely the G33 × TK91 cut. A jar labeled Pluto from anywhere else could be something different — which is why the nose and the COA matter more than the name.
Pluto vs Pluto Kush, Pluto Runtz and Granddaddy Pluto
- Pluto Kush: a separate listing. AllBud describes it as a balanced hybrid up to about 21% THC with berry, blueberry, chemical and citrus flavors; The Hemp Doctor says Pluto Kush is more earth-forward while Pluto has the creamier exhale. They're often sold as if they were the same.
- Pluto Runtz: a candy-leaning name tied to the Runtz family; SeedFinder lists an Ethos Genetics Pluto Runtz. Not the Gashouse cut.
- Granddaddy Pluto: Leafly lists it with the same Gelato #33 × Triangle Kush parents from Seed Junky and Gashouse, with blueberry, grape and floral flavors. Whether it's a sister selection or a renamed cut isn't documented.
Pluto Terpene Profile
Pluto's terpene data is thinner than its reputation — Leafly doesn't publish a lab breakdown for it. The sources that do list terpenes agree on the top of the stack: Weedmaps names myrcene and limonene, and The Hemp Doctor ranks myrcene first, then limonene, then caryophyllene. Smaller amounts of humulene, pinene and linalool are commonly reported for the kush and Gelato sides of the family. Caryophyllene is worth knowing on its own — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a dietary cannabinoid that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, musky, the heavy body
Limonene — citrus lift, the happy onset
Caryophyllene — pepper and fuel on the exhale
Humulene — woody, earthy kush depth
Typical relative profile for Pluto — myrcene-led per Weedmaps and The Hemp Doctor. Leafly has no published lab terpene data for Pluto, so treat this as a guide and check the COA on your batch.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky, and the terpene most associated with Pluto's heavy, sedating finish.
- Limonene: The citrus and lemon notes AllBud picks up, and part of why Pluto opens with a mood lift instead of instant couch lock.
- Caryophyllene: Pepper and fuel on the exhale — the gassy Triangle Kush side showing through.
- Humulene: Woody, earthy depth common in kush lines.
The berry and cream don't come from one terpene — they're the Gelato side's overall chemistry, and they're louder in some cuts than others.
Appearance
Pluto buds are dense, tight and heavy — The Hemp Doctor says they can be hard to break apart by hand. AllBud describes dark olive-green buds with purple undertones; Weedmaps calls them violet and trichome-coated. Expect deep green to purple coloring, orange pistils, and a thick, frosty layer of resin that makes the flower sticky. The purple deepens when plants see cooler nights late in flower, so color varies by grower.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar of Pluto and the first hit is gas: Leafly's reviewers list diesel, chemical and berry as its top flavors, and The Hemp Doctor describes the aroma as loud, pungent and "industrial." Behind the fuel sit earth, pine and citrus. AllBud's tags lean brighter — citrus, lemon, sour and sweet — while Weedmaps reports blueberry and skunky berry. The inhale tends to be earthy with lemon zest and a faint creamy sweetness from the Gelato side; the exhale is peppery fuel. If a "Pluto" smells only like candy with no gas at all, it's probably a different cut.
Recreational Effects
Pluto is a two-stage strain. It starts in the head — Weedmaps describes an uplifting, spacey high that touches body and mind — then settles into a relaxed, sleepy calm. On Leafly, reviewers' most-reported effects are:
- Relaxed: the headline effect — muscles let go and the day winds down.
- Hungry: a strong appetite kick; plan your snacks.
- Sleepy: the finish. Most people treat Pluto as a nighttime strain.
AllBud adds body high, calming and uplifting to the list, and The Hemp Doctor calls it euphoric and creative early on, with heavy physical relaxation behind it.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a lighter, happy head change — colors, music and conversation get more interesting.
- 20–45 minutes: relaxation moves from the shoulders down through the body.
- 1–2 hours and beyond: heavy, sleepy calm. At higher doses, couch lock.
The Hemp Doctor's users call it a creeper — the start feels gentle, then the body side builds. Wait before taking more.

Pluto's dense, purple-tinged buds load into a clear glass recycler for a smooth evening session.

How Strong Is Pluto?
Pluto is a high-THC strain, but the numbers vary by source and grower:
- AllBud: 21–23% THC.
- Seed Junky (via GrowDiaries): about 22%.
- The Hemp Doctor: 20–27%.
- Leafly and Weedmaps: no percentage — Weedmaps just says "high THC."
So Pluto isn't the strongest strain on paper — plenty of modern cuts test higher. What makes it feel strong is the combination of solid THC and a myrcene-heavy, Triangle Kush body that builds after a gentle start. The Hemp Doctor's CEO, Robert M. Shade, describes it as an indica that feels "heavy without being totally one-note" and says it isn't one they suggest for first-timers.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Pluto batch against the 20–27% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Pluto vs Similar Strains
- vs Gelato #33: the sweeter, more balanced parent. Pluto keeps some of the creamy berry but trades the easygoing hybrid high for far more body weight.
- vs Triangle Kush: the gassy, sedating Florida kush parent. Pluto is fruitier and opens with more of a mental lift.
- vs Gelato crosses like Biscotti and Gushers: similar dessert notes, but without Triangle Kush's heavy finish.
- vs Runtz and Pink Runtz: candy-forward and lighter. Pluto is gassier and sleepier.
- vs Slurricane: another sweet-then-heavy indica The Hemp Doctor lists alongside Pluto.
- vs Sour Diesel: Weedmaps lists it as similar on the fuel side, but Sour Diesel is an energetic daytime sativa — the opposite finish.
What we carry instead
Diesel Hemp doesn't sell Pluto. Honestly, none of our jars is a twin. Straw Gua Mintz (from $29) shares the berry sweetness and a kush backbone through Kush Mints, but it's sativa-leaning and lighter — a daytime cousin rather than a nightcap. If you want Pluto's gas and evening weight, Mule Fuel (GMO Cookies × Lurch, from $65) is the closer match on effect.
Who Pluto Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced consumers who want an evening or nighttime strain; anyone who likes gas with some berry sweetness; people who want to unwind, eat and sleep.
Poor fit: beginners, daytime productivity, or anyone sensitive to THC — "paranoid" is among Leafly's reported negatives. For a lighter, more upbeat session, Strawberry 2.1 is the gentler pick on our shelf.
How to Use Pluto THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to taste the berry and citrus under the gas. Around 350–370°F keeps it lighter and brighter; 390–410°F brings out the full body weight.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — Pluto creeps. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. Save it for when you don't need to do anything afterward. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and other strain databases, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason among Leafly reviewers (about 29%) — though "paranoid" is also a reported negative, so dose matters.
- Low mood: about 26% of Leafly reviewers.
- Stress: about 23%.
- Sleep and body tension: AllBud lists insomnia, pain, cramps and muscle spasms among consumer-reported uses, consistent with its sleepy, body-heavy finish.
- Appetite: "hungry" is one of Leafly's top three effects.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Paranoia — reported by some users, mostly at high doses or low tolerance.
- Grogginess and couch lock — The Hemp Doctor lists grogginess; expect a slow next morning if you overdo it.
Is Pluto good for daytime? Not usually — it's built for the evening. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Pluto Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Pluto. A good seller knows whether it's the Gashouse / Seed Junky G33 × TK91 cut, Pluto Kush or Pluto Runtz.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC, plus terpenes. Myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene near the top line up with the profile. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Gas first. Real Pluto leads with diesel and chemical fuel; berry and citrus come second. Pure candy with no fuel is a warning sign.
- Dense, heavy, frosty buds with deep green to purple color — not loose, leafy or dull.
- A proper cure — slightly sticky, never crumbly or smelling like hay.
Growing Pluto
Pluto is available as feminized seeds (Seed Junky, Gashouse and Premium Cultivars are all listed on GrowDiaries), but published grow data is limited and sources disagree.
- Flowering: The Hemp Doctor says as little as 8 weeks; Mood says 10–12 weeks. Plan for 8–10 and watch the trichomes.
- Yield: up to about 500 g/m² indoors and 600 g per plant outdoors, per The Hemp Doctor.
- Training: responds well to low-stress training; prune and defoliate to keep air moving through the dense buds.
- Climate: 70–80°F days and 40–50% humidity in flower to prevent bud rot. Dropping night temperatures 10–15°F in the last two weeks brings out the purple.
- Outdoors: harvest late September to early October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Harvest timing: about 30% amber trichomes for the heaviest effect; mostly milky for a brighter head high.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pluto an indica or sativa?
Pluto is indica-dominant. Leafly lists it as an indica, AllBud calls it a 70/30 indica-dominant hybrid, and Weedmaps lists it as a hybrid. Its effects — relaxed, hungry, sleepy — are classic indica.
What strain is Pluto a cross of?
The documented lineage is Gelato #33 × 1991 Triangle Kush, backcrossed once (TK 91 Bx1), bred by Seed Junky Genetics and released by Gashouse in 2022. Weedmaps also cites a Mr H Genetics version (Bad Dogg × Cosmic Adventure), and some sources call the lineage unknown.
Who breeds the Pluto strain?
According to Gashouse, Seed Junky Genetics bred it and Gashouse selected its cut from those seeds. Gashouse is the California brand most associated with Pluto.
How strong is the Pluto strain?
AllBud lists 21–23% THC and other sources report 20–27%. It starts gently, then builds into heavy body effects, so it hits harder than the number suggests. Start small.
What does Pluto taste like?
Gas first — diesel and chemical — with berry, citrus and pine behind it. The inhale can be earthy with lemon and a faint creaminess; the exhale is peppery fuel.
What are the effects of Pluto?
Leafly reviewers most often report relaxed, hungry and sleepy. The high usually opens with a light, spacey lift before settling into heavy body calm.
Is Pluto good for sleep?
It's one of its main uses. Pluto's finish is sleepy and body-heavy, which is why most people save it for the evening.
Is Pluto good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 29% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but paranoia is also a reported negative. Low doses are the safer approach.
Is Pluto the same as Pluto Kush or Pluto Runtz?
No. Pluto Kush is a separate strain listing with a more earth-forward, berry-chemical profile, and Pluto Runtz is a candy-leaning Runtz-family name. Granddaddy Pluto shares Pluto's listed parents, but how the two cuts relate isn't documented.
Is Pluto good for beginners?
Not really. It's potent and it creeps. If you try it, take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes before more.
How long does Pluto take to flower?
Sources disagree: about 8 weeks per The Hemp Doctor, 10–12 weeks per Mood. Outdoor harvests land in late September to early October.
Where can I buy Pluto THCA flower online?
Pluto isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. For berry sweetness with a kush backbone, try Straw Gua Mintz THCA Flower, a Strawberry Guava × Kush Mints cross from $29 — though it's lighter and more daytime than Pluto. For Pluto's gas and heavy evening weight, Mule Fuel is the closer match. Both are third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
